The ‘Supermodel’ of tennis
By Ahmed Abbas Rizvi

DUBAI — You can’t be talking tennis with Serena Williams. Would you be talking geology (or even acting) with Salma Hayek on a deserted island?

Anyway, Serena believes talking tennis is “so boring and redundant”, as she said at the last US Open.

True she is a tennis player. But she is not ‘just’ a tennis player.

Besides winning six singles, six doubles and two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, and an Olympic gold medal in the doubles with sister Venus, she has made a name for herself in show business with parts in movies, a music video and on TV. She’s even been a voice in The Simpsons.

She has even graced the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Special. The other day she courted photographers in an eye-popping red, Stella McCartney gown for the premiere of Pierce Brosnan’s movie After The Sunset.

And more recently, Serena wore absolutely nothing except Cartier jewellery and Jimmy Choo boots for a new book being sold to raise money for Elton John’s AIDS Foundation.

Her off-court pursuits are as chronicled as her wins and losses, and she feeds the hype with a confident-yet-coy personality.

“I consider myself an entertainer,” she says. “I remember always thinking of myself as a broader picture as opposed to just your normal athlete.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been your normal athlete. I’ve always had something different going on in my life.”

Regardless of how well she plays, it seems Williams is noticed for what she wears.

You almost feel sorry for the all the supermodels out there. Serena outclasses them in the looks department. She looks better in a skimpy swimsuit than a swimsuit model, and plays tennis better than any other woman on the planet.

So the obvious beginning to the conversation is her wardrobe for the Dubai Women’s Open.

“I am not wearing a new collection of dresses unfortunately,” she says. “I am pretty much wearing the same thing that I wore in Australia. It’s great and a very fun collection.”

And the boots?

“I don’t know if I am going to wear the boots,” she admits.

You wish she does. Her retro wardrobe provides one of the biggest buzz in women’s tennis.

At the US Open last year, Serena arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium looking like she was ready for a killer night on the town, wearing slinky, knee-high black boots, black studded tank-top, denim skirt and matching jean jacket.

Her outfit prompted a few whistles and plenty of full-on stares from the ballboys and fans. While not as racy as her spandex “cat suit” from two years ago, the much-ballyhooed boots were an on-court fashion breakthrough.

For her second round match, she wore black hot pants and a navel-ring revealing, studded tight tank top. While the stadium loudspeakers blared the 1970s song “You Sexy Thing”, she warmed up in black, knee-high faux boots along with a black zip-up jacket with “SERENA” in sequins on the back.

Earlier at Roland Garros, Serena wore a self-described “fuchsia with red hints“ ensemble, complete with massive hoop earrings and a pom-pom ponytail holder.

And earlier this year in Melbourne, two days after being ranked No.6 on Mr. Blackwell’s annual worst-dressed list, Serena unveiled her new line of lime green-and-white Nike tennis apparel for the Australian Open.

“I think it is fun,” she tells about her dressing up for court. “I like to dress up for court because this is my profession and this is what I do. It’s like I feel fine and I am looking good and I am dressing well.

“For me, it is what I want to do. It’s bringing fun to the game, it’s bringing different viewers.”

But nobody dared do all this before?

“I don’t know if anybody could carry it at all,” she responds.

From her wardrobe, the conversation veers to her other off court activities — action and fashion designing.

What are her forthcoming acting projects?

“I have a few different jobs,” she says. “Then I go pitch some different roles to different studios when I go back home. So I have a lot of work coming up.”

But she is not willing to reveal anything more.

“All I can say is watch out for me,” she says.

“In a few years time, I will hopefully be at the Oscars,” she adds, breaking out into a laugh.

And what about her fashion line (named Aneras — which is Serena spelt backwards)?

“Our focus right now is on ready to wear. We just have had a lot of meetings. We just had a meeting with a couple of different companies that we are going to licence off- our bags and our shoes too.”

But the men will have to wait for a while before they can wear an Aneras. Men’s wear is not on Serena’s plans for a while.

“I wanted to do men’s wear. But you know what I said, ‘I can’t do it, it’s too much for me’, since I am mostly the main designer.

“It’s very, very difficult. Men’s wear is not easy at all,” she adds.

“It’s just so difficult to make the stuff that I want to make in men’s wear- but maybe I will make some slacks eventually,” she laughs.

But she could use Venus’ help, you suggest.

“She is actually one of my designers as well,” she says. “One time we were going for a show and I couldn’t design everything. I needed to come up with a few coats and some pants. “So she made my favourite coat and in the show it was incredible. It was a really wonderful piece with inverted pleats and I was like ‘Oh my god- I love this’.”

Don’t all these activities affect her tennis?

“I don’t think I have lost any of my vigour for tennis,” she says firmly.

“I am every more excited to play, and excited to be here. I know people are really excited to play me. So I have to make sure that I am ready to get at it,” she whispers.

She enjoys romancing the red carpets and the ramps, but she has one regret.

“I don’t have a private life any more,” she says with a sad face.

“Everything I do- anything I do — it’s just everywhere. If I hang out in Los Angeles, the paparazzi are everywhere.

“I just go to New York and they attack me,” she says, gesturing with her hands.

“Unfortunately I wasn’t looking at my best. I am pretty sure I will be making the worst dressed list,” she laughed. “It’s really unfortunate if I do- I am trying to get off that list.”

With paparazzi always around, you would have thought she would always have to watch what she is doing. But no!

“I have always felt I am not doing anything I shouldn’t be doing. So I am okay with the Press and the paparazzi.

“But sometimes it’s really invasive because I am just trying to live my life. I am with my friends and just trying to shop and they actually start to follow you. And they followed me the other day in Miami for a while.

“So it can get pretty invasive actually. It is like every city I go to - whether it is Miami, New York or LA — they are always targeted at me.”

Why doesn’t she try Cambodia, like Angelina Jolie, or some deserted part of Africa to escape the flashbulbs? “This job is really cutting into my social life,” she laughs. “I can’t even go to Africa.”

So, which city has the worst of the celebrity-chasers?

“London, I am sorry to say, is the worst with the paparazzi. I have had a horrible, nightmarish experience with the paparazzi over there.”

And what has been her worst paparazzi experience?

“My London experience.”

What was it? “I can’t tell you about that,” she laughs. “All I can is that I was looking through the paper and I was extremely shocked and horrified.

Was it a story or a photo?

“It was a photo,” she reveals.

But then she gets philosophical. “I have started to realise that I am really just a world athlete and a world entertainer; I am a world known person, I am a global icon,” she says, emphasising on the last word.

So with tennis, acting and fashion-designing already on her list of ‘been there, done that’ list, would she be looking elsewhere for fulfillment. Singing perhaps?

“I don’t think I have a great voice,” she says modestly, in the sweetest of voices.

“But actually I was doing this animation series and I had to sing. My agent didn’t tell me. She was like ‘Oh yeah, you go over here and do the voiceover’. And I was like ‘okay, okay’.

“When I got there, I am just reading and acting and all of sudden I am like ‘oh, where are my lines?’

“And as I was looking for my lines, they said ‘did you learn the poem?’. I was like ‘Oh my god’.

“So I had to learn my poem really fast and the next thing I know I was singing,” she laughs.

“They said make sure you smile when you sing. So I was smiling and singing,” she giggles.

“Honestly I couldn’t believe it when they did the playback. I was like ‘Is that me?’. I sang really nice and I was like ‘Oh my god!’ Honestly I couldn’t believe how well I could sing.

“So that was just an amazing experience,” she giggles. “Ever since I have been loving animation.”

So what’s left to do for Serena? She already plays tennis better than anyone else.

Perhaps, she’ll probably end up winning Academy Awards, as he hopes, dominating the runways in New York and Paris. She’s certainly got the stuff for it.

She’s cool!
