I guess Momo needed some time to get her game started again
BTW she had matchpoint for 6-0 in the final set...

Nice fight from Kirilenko.

No, Maria just faded completely midway through the second. If she had been in better shape, she would have won. Mauresmo was terrible until 4-4 in the second. I don't think she'll go much farther here...

Three times Mauresmo went up 0-40 on Maria's serve, then lost the next five points:o .

i don't mean to bash momo, but something is so unsettling about her having the #1 seed...

Congrats Amelie....
...but what a great effort from Maria! She's really getting there, gaining the experience, and in the future she'll be able to pull through matches like this. I bet the creeping thought "Oh my, I'm beating the world number two here." had a little, if just a little to do with her defeat. :)

maria has nothing to be ashamed of....the long rallies and heat broke her down

Amelie...pfff..it was so hard...she has a quite pretty draw now, she has to go as further as possible ! Allez ma chérie !

Bad luck to Maria - it did look like there would be a major "upset" here when she lead 6-4 3-1 but it wasn't to be.

Maria you will get there one day. :)

And the infamous mboyle attacks Momo again.

Look at this way, she won despite not playing her best. She always struggles against young Russian players. And her last 2 loses were to Linetskaya and Safina. 'nuff said.

It looked like Mauresmo played an awful 1st set and was heading that way til the middle of the second. I'm glad she placed herself together and won the match. Good luck, Amélie!

Yes, I think so too... Lindsay and Serena as the top seeds are expected to go far and not be upset, with Momo and the Russian girls though (Myskina in Doha  ), your never sure (except Sharapova). Kim and Justine are quite stable too, even they are not fully fit... I guess Momo and a couple of Russian girls find it hard to cope with the pressure as the no.1 seed.

The fact remains Momo is still #1 seed whether she want to choke or tank her match, it is completely up to her.

The conditions are very hot and humid in Miami. Good win for Momo, but can't say she played great. Had Kirilenko not fizzled physically in the last set, there's no telling what could have happened. Hope Momo gains more confidence going into the 3rd round. She needs to be much more consistant being the #1 seed. Never thought I'd see her in pink either - but she looked cute :)

I think if Kirilenko has lasted physically it would have been much, much harder for Momo to come back. But physical preparation is a part of tennis, so... glad she won this one, I hope she'll go far.

No doubt Amelie was definitely more fit than Kirilenko which allowed her to take over the 3rd set. Even given the hot and extremely humid conditions she endured physically. That is one strong advantage she has over other players - her stamina. Amelie's one of the most, if not the most fit player on the tour and that's why she often has the upper edge in 3 setters.

C'mon give Amelie a little credit. When I'm playing crap like she was the first set I tend to give up or play even worse. She really played better as the match went on. The heat and humidity will be to her advantage and after Masha, her draw gets much easier. I think she's fine until the QF

A mini match report ;) :
Yes, Momo did play crappy in the first set and Maria played a little better. We were starting to lose hope at the start of the second, but midway through, she picked up her game and was able finally to break. The third set she raised her level, plus Maria started to tire a bit and make more errors. It was brutally hot and humid out there, plus the wind can play tricks on stadium court. Credit Momo's superb fitness for her coming through :D

yeah, I think Kirilenko played well in the first set and the second. She was probably just tired under the heat and humidity.

Anyway, better luck next time. She has great potential. a good player

This is what momo said after the match:
A. MAURESMO / M. Kirilenko
4-6, 6-4, 6-1
An interview with:

AMELIE MAURESMO

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. It looked like it took you a little while to get comfortable out there.

AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, yeah, a set and a half to really...

Q. Was that you or her?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Was a little bit of both, I think. You know, she played really well, that first set especially. You know, I was ‑‑ I thought I was giving her too many free points and I wasn't really into my rhythm. You know, it took me a little time today, and I finally got my game together, put that ball back in, you know, a lot of variation as well. Was able to, you know, come back pretty strong in that second set, and then I think she got probably tired a little bit in the third set.

Tough one.

Q. How much was the heat a factor?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Maybe at the end of the match, you know, I was physically a little stronger so that, you know, I was capable of coming back on court after the break and really being able to give 100%. Maybe it wasn't really the case for her. And especially when you lose a second set, then, yeah, I guess it's tougher also mentally to come back and play strong.

Q. What does a match like that do for the rest of the week?

AMELIE MAURESMO: I think it's pretty good, actually, to come out of a match like that the beginning of a tournament. You know, it gives you, I think, a little confidence back after the disappointment of last week.

So, yeah, hopefully, you know, if I'm capable of really having a good recuperation, I guess I'm going to play tomorrow again, so I hope that it's going to be good.

Q. I had one question about Miss Golovin, a countrywoman. What do you think of her potential?

AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, you know, she's proved already a lot of things I think on the court. She's been playing pretty well last season, you know. She's hitting the ball hard. You know, she's a tough player. I think mentally she's pretty strong also. Still may be sometimes, you know, like when we say "junior," is like maybe she has to be on the right points more focused, focus on these points. But, you know, she's only like 17, I think. She's going to improve a lot. I think she has a lot of potential.

I had never seen her play before and I was very impressed by Maria's all court game. She came to net and volleyed very well, drop shotted well, and was good from the backcourt.

Her serve showed promise, but needs work, as does her conditioning. But she is a very talented player who, if she toughens up, could be a real contender.

Q. Out of the many Russian girls that are around, which one are your best let's say friends?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Maria Kirilenko.

Q. And out of the most famous ones?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: She's going to be famous.
