she's a good player as well. just seems to come up short, not enough power/stamina. but as someone else said, it's claytime in a few weeks and Marta will garner enough points to ensure she hangs around the top-50 mark.

BAD NEWS

Marta is seriously thinking about retirement. She hasn't played since September and apparently she has no intention to play again (at least) for the next six months. She has gotten back home in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and is studying there, where she was born.

One year ago Marta was #47 WTA (her highest ranking) and now she is ranked #276...
She is only 22 but I don't think she'll ever come back...

These are her career highlights:

1998: At 15, she wins the U16 Orange Bowl without dropping a set beating on hard players like Pennetta, Camerin and Danilidou. Holds the record as the youngest winner ever to win a challenger ITF event beating her opponent 60 60 in the final ($10K Povoa de Varz d. Wendy Fix)

1999: At 16, in second WTA Tour appearance Marta reaches the quarterfinals in Tier V Knokke Heist. Wins 3 ITF titles in 5 finals.

2000: At 17, qualifies for Roland Garros, her Grand Slam debut and only third career Tour main draw; advanced to QF to become second woman qualifier and second lowest-ranked player at No. 108 to reach QF there in Open Era (Schwartz, ranked No. 125, was first in 1999); d. world No. 22 Van Roost in 2r, No. 28 Sidot in 3r and fellow qualifier Neffa-de los Rios in 4r (first time two women qualifiers reached 4r at the tournament); l. to C. Martinez 76(5) 61 and afterwards (June 12), broke into Top 100 at No. 64; reached first Tour SF at Knokke-Heist

2001: At the beginning of the year reached Australian Open 4th round (lost to eventual champion Jennifer Capriati after being 5/0 up in the first set!). Reached 3rd round in Miami beating Schiavone and Maleeva before falling against Dokic. In consecutive weeks, reached Vienna QF and Knokke-Heist SF (for second time); reached first Tour doubles final at Basel (w/Kruger)

2002: Defeated three-time former-champion Sanchez-Vicario 60 61 at Roland Garros for her worst Grand Slam loss and only the fifth player (after Sabatini, Graf, Pierce and Hingis) to defeat Sanchez-Vicario that badly since 1987 (l. 2r to qualifier Zvonareva); won two singles rubbers in Fed Cup debut for Spain, d. Germany for SF berth; at Bali, d. defending champion Widjaja en route to first and only QF of season. Still, that season her game improved so much in hard beating Schiavone in Indian took a set off Myskina too in NYC

2003: Reached third SF of career at Casablanca, her first since July 2001. Defeated Petrova in Miami before losing in a third set tie break against 8th seed Mauresmo 26 62 76

2004: First Top 50 finish; reached SF at Acapulco (d. defending champion and top seed Coetzer) and Estoril (d. top seed Bovina in 3s en route); QF at Casablanca (l. to top seed Loit), Sopot and Tashkent. won first career doubles title at Sopot (w/Llagostera Vives)

2005: Defeated Medina Garrigues in Charleston for best victory of the year. Won second career doubles title (w/An.Serra Zanetti) at Istanbul and reached second doubles final of season at Budapest, teaming with Lourdes Dominguez Lino and falling to No.1 seeds Loit/Srebotnik in final.

I love Marta!! Please don't retire!
I remember seeing her lose at Wimbledon Qulaies in 2000 to Lisa McShea after having a big lead and just totally sobbing after. It was so touching.

she's been down in 200's before and got back

Yeah, but she had an ankle injury...now she is just fed up of tennis

But hey, no need to feel sorry for her. She had a decent career, got to top 50 in both singles and doubles, played the best players, toured the world but she is only 22 so she can live a normal life for a girl her age and even think of a (unlikely) come back in the future. But what really amazes me is that being so young and having had just an OK career she earned (only in prize money, no sponsors or appearance fees) the sum of $835.000 :help:

That would be lousy if she retires. She's not just a great player, and hot ;), but her temper and attitude is admired as well.

Marrerro is one of the best looking WTA girls of the last half decade, but it's a stretch to say that she is a great player. Once she turned 18 she never really showed the same promise that she displayed when she was very young with that RG quarterfinal and strong ITF results. When i watched Marta play the last couple of years i had my doubts whether she really belonged in the Top 100.
