I didn't get to talk to any of them for a long period of time. Just got their autographs. I think I talked with Kim and Daja the longest. I was able to get a photo of me and Serena together, so that was one of the greatest moments of my life . Kim is a really nice person. She even volunteered to take a photo with me, but I didn't have anyone to take my photo Everyone else was very nice as well. I talked with Sandrine in French a little. Told her good luck, and I think she's a great player. Same with Meghann and Daja...though this was before Daja made her brake through at the U.S. Open. It was a few weeks earlier at the Acura Classic.

Justin, what did Mary Joe do that shocked you so much?

I have talked to a few, but the funniest one was with Vivi Ruano, it was at Roland Garros 2000, she had just seem me at the Madrid Open the week before where she made the SF after an awful season and I had congratulated her then, so she sees me at RG and comes to me, I am like "hi" and she says "hi" and starts talking and talking about her ranking and her projects, she was chatting to me for hours!!! LOL! she must have been desperated to chat with someone, everybody around me just assumed we were best of friends or something! LOL!
Dec 30th, 2001, 06:46 PM
Oh yeah, I remember another funny one - with Lisa Raymond also at the Madrid Open, I wanted Lisa and Rennae to give me their autographs so that I could send them to Sub (another poster here), so I printed out a picture of them hugging after winning the AO. So I go to Lisa Raymond with two of them (one for myself and one for Sub), and ask her for her autograph, she looks at the pic and says "it's a great picture" and I am like "yep", so she looks at me and says again "it's a really nice picture", and I am just nodding and pass her the other one so that she can sign it, so she goes on for a third time "it's a really great picture" I guess it hit me then that it was not that she thought I was stupid and couldn't understand what she was saying but rather that she wanted the pic!!! LOL! so I told her she could keep it if she wanted! lol - and she did so I didn't get an autograph for myself cuz she kept the pic!!!

Here is my trip report from the US Open...
Don't forget that I played a few points on a practice court with Anke at last years US OPEN! [quote]Well…
I guess I’ll start at the beginning…
(Day 1) We ((niftmk)(he posts sometimes), my dad, and I) went right to Court 11 because Arantxa was set to play later on in the day. As we were waiting for the match to start, Elena Likhovtseva was lingering around the practice courts with her coach. I walked up to her, and said “Elena, can I have your autograph?” and she was like “Sure”. I think that she was excited that someone recognized her when her name wasn’t on the scoreboard.
Then, we watched the first 6 games of the Kiefer-Schuttler match. BORING! Kiefer’s coach or trainer or someone(she was very large and rather short…maybe 5’3” was hollering “kiki” over and over and would walk back and forth and she smelled….HORRIBLE!! The match was taking FOREVER, so we left the court because it looked as though it was just getting started.
Monopoly Man (Mike) and I went over to the Court 7 and watched Lina Krasnoroutskaya play the second set. She is hits some super hard shots and lapses in concentration, but definitely a future #1. The crowd was ALL for Craybas because she was American, so only myself and another guy were cheering for Lina. I thought the crowd was going to lynch me after the match! I went and asked for an autograph and she was also more then glad to give one. I must say, out of all the ones I got, hers was most ridiculous. It says “Li as one letter and then an M with a line(-).”
Next, we wandered the grounds a little because Schuttler had won just broken in the second set, so we knew ASV wouldn’t be on for another hour. We went into the Lincoln Innovations building and were absolutely blown away. The beginning is like a museum with a car and then there’s neck massages, a lounge, and a tennis court in the shape of a Lincoln sign. As we neared the court, we learned that Wilson sponsors clinics with pros! The next class was starting in a few minutes, and it was Sandrine Testud teaching volleys! Naturally, we being avid tennis fans and teens, we signed up. We were waiting around for a few minutes with one other boy, when Sandrine came out. Her hair was wet and she had a big smile across her face. She went right to the wall, joked with an instructor/organizer, and came towards the 3 of us. Immediately, we got her autographs and she was so nice. Then, we got pictures with her. My dad gets my camera and is about to take the picture and Sandrine says “Wow! Nice camera!” and smiles (It’s a Cannon Elph with zoom if anyone cares). She hugged us then took the court. They gave us new Wilson Triad racquets to use, which weren’t too good. I used a blue one that was strong very tight (for control). My first few shots went into the net. Then, I got the hang of it. I’d say we played 10 shots. Then, a huge crowd came and out of nowhere, 20 kids were on the court. While the kids were hitting, a bet arose with three of the kids (maybe 13) to see who could hit it closest to her head. I was disgusted! After they all got to hit around with her a little, there was a contest. Whoever was the most consistent and had the longest rally would win a regular tennis ball. Since we were there, we(reluctantly) were first in line. She hit it to my forehand and I hit it right to her. Then she went and returned it with a high backhand. Not thinking, I rifled it right to her and she hit it long. Then, she gave me another but I missed it and I lost. She waved to me on my way out and said “Thanks”. I said “good luck” and left.
We next went to another practice court. On one court Sampras was practicing and on another Tauziat/Dechy were practicing. We watched the two Frenchwomen play a mini game, when out of nowhere, Martina Hingis, Melanie Molitor, and someone else walked onto the court. They walked right across, parallel to the net, not caring. Martina looks right at Tauziat and points to her watch and then to Nathalie and puts five fingers up. Dechy and Tauziat both looked at their coaches and rolled their eyes. Martina had just walked up and stole the court from them! They were nearing their completion anyway, so they left after a few more points. While the Nats were playing their final points, probably 150+ people swarmed around and all took pictures of Martina sitting there and stretching. As the Nats walked out, we got their autographs. Tauziat was glad to give them until one little boy walks up to me as I’m getting my ball signed and tries to quietly say ‘Who’s this?’ I look at him like ‘Get a clue’ and then look at Nathalie and say ‘Thank you SO much, Nathalie.” She nods and then the little boy asks for one. She pats him on the shoulder and says “Sorry”. Dechy was standing there waiting, and we went “Nathalie” and she didn’t turn around. Then we walked around to her front and said “Nathalie” once again and this time she heard us. We asked for her autograph and she was also glad to give one.
Next, we checked the IBM Match Update center and saw that Arantxa’s match had started and she was up 1-0. We RAN to the court and got seats on the elevated behind the baseline, front row center. I put my paper plate signs with “A” “S” “V” on them and placed them in the fence in front of me. During changeovers, we would start waving them around trying to get Arantxa’s attention. She would occasionally glance quickly up and pretend not to notice because she didn’t want to lose concentration before serving or returning. Then, when the Chair said “Quickly” and looked our way to the people trying to find seats, Arantxa looked up and smiled. The match was amazing and at 5-2(I think), we left our seats and went down to wait for her because I had Very Important Messages to give her! Little did we know that the match was far from over and we found seats at the large TV that was next to the court. We watched and when Mandula won the 12th game and tied it 6-6, Taylor Dent walked by. I quickly shot up and got his auto. He was very nice and I said ‘Good Luck tonight!’ The tiebreak was amazing, and after the match, we took our places. I RAN UP TO HER AFTER THE MATCH(THERE WERE LIKE 50+ KIDS SWARMING HER AND MULTIPLE SECURITY GUARDS) AND I HOLLER: "ARANTXA!! I HAVE MESSAGES FOR YOU!!" SHE LOOKS AT ME AND I HANDED THE MESSAGES TOWARDS HER. SHE TOOK THEM, LOOKED AT ME, AND SMILED. I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF OR ANYTHING BECAUSE ALL THOSE KIDS WERE AROUND. THEN, SHE LOOKED AT MY BIG BALL AND MADE A SIGNATURE IN THE AIR BECAUSE WE GOT SEPERATED. SHE KEPT LOOKING OVER HER SHOULDER TRYING TO FIND ME! THEN, SHE MOTIONED TO ONE OF THE SECURITY GUARDS THAT WERE ESCORTING HER TO THE LOCKER ROOM AND POINTED TO MY BALL. AT FIRST I DIDN'T REALIZE AS THE LADY WAS TRYING TO GET THE BALL. THEN, SHE SAID "ARANTXA WANTS IT!" SO I HANDED IT TO HER, SHE SIGNED IT, AND SMILED RIGHT AT ME!!!" AS SHE TURNED THE CORNER INTO THE LOCKER ROOM, SHE LOOKED AT ME, ONCE AGAIN, AND WAVED!! AAAH!!!!!
Just a few minutes after the match, it started to rain. We got stuck under one of the Food Court umbrellas for most of the rain. After the rain stopped, we went and watched 2 games in the Safin match. Again…BORING! So, we went and got there just as Jelena Dokic and Serra-Zannetti were taking the court. We watched the entire match and got Jelena’s autograph. The match was great and was almost 2 hours long. Most of the crowd were joking about how weird of a grunt Jelena had and for a few minutes were heckling a linesman who called a shot that was clearly out, that 100 people behind him saw out and Serra-Zannetti saw out. The match was great and enjoyable. Jelena was glad to give us an auto.
After that, we went over to the Grandstand to watch the latter part of the 3rd set between Shaughnessy and Grande. The last 3 games and the tiebreak were great. After the match, we waited at the Grandstand Corridor Exit and waited to get Meghann’s autograph. As we waited, we saw Rita walk out crying. My stomach was torn. She played so hard, but couldn’t beat her. Meghann walked by and was glad to give us autos. She signed Mike’s program and my Big Ball. As she was signing the ball, a lady in line ran right into her and then she ran into me. At first I thought I ran into her and said “Sorry” and she replied very enthusiastically “That’s OK, but it wasn’t even you” and she let out a chuckle. But as she ran into me, I got her sweat ALL OVER my arm. EW! We left about an hour later.
(Day 2) We arrived at the grounds at about 9:50 and after waiting to be let in, we headed straight towards the practice court areas. We bought a schedule and sat down to watch Anke practice. She was banging forehands and backhands all over the place! We walked around to see who else was practicing and watched Maggie Maleeva for a few moments. Anke was nearing the end of her session so we went back to get an autograph and she obliged. I never realized it, but her signature looks like two ears next to each other. It’s pretty funny looking, actually.
At 11:00, we went to Court 18 to watch Sandrine play her first round match. We sat on the 3 row bleacher side, behind the right of the chair in the top row (maybe GoSandrine and Kaelin will remember ) As Sandrine walked on the court, she waved to us because she remembered us from the previous day. We only stayed the first set because we knew Sandrine was gonna take it.
Next we went and watched Kim Clijsters’s last few games on Ashe. That is the only trip we took to Ashe. I hated that stadium last year and I hated it this year, too. We were on the Promenade level and the seats weren’t bad, but watching those matches are such blowouts that it’s boring. We watched the last 4 games and then went over to the practice courts. We saw Ashley Harkleroad just leaving so we waited to get her autograph. As she was exiting, Summer Sanders and the USA Network Cameras went to her for an interview. Ashley was more then glad to sign whatever for whomever. She is stunning in person. After I got my Giant Tennis Ball signed, I took a sip of my soda and as I was putting it down, Summer Sanders looks right at me and says, “So, What do you think of her?” and I was like, “Huh?” because I didn’t think she was talking to me. So then she goes, “You think she’s cute?” and sticks the mic like right into my face. The camera pans on me and I say startled, “Uh, yeah.” Then, Summer asks, “Like Anna Kournikova?” And again I was like “Uh, yeah”. I gave Summer the nastiest look when the camera went off of me and I think she got what I meant. I was like the only one in Ashley’s age bracket that was asking for her autograph, so I guess Summer was trying to waist time and give Ashley a chance to take a break. Boy was that embarrassing!
After that, we went and watch Kouliviskaya practice and we were kinda startled to see 2 forehands.
Next, we went and watched the first set in the Lisa Raymond/Anna Smashnova match. It was so boring. So, we went to the Lincoln Innovations building to look around and waist time. On the way back, we saw the Kim Clijsters was having an autograph session at 1:30. It was about 1:15 so we decided to wait. We were 6th in line and Kim looked very un-interested when it started. We congratulated her on a great match, and she said very unenthusiastically ‘Thanks’.
After that, we went to watch the Nathalie Tauziat/Cara Black match figuring it would be a good one. Boy, were we wrong once again. It wasn’t a match, it was ‘Let’s see who can get a serve in, then barely make a return or hit it out.’ By the 5th game we were outta there.
Next we went to the Maggie Maleeva/Kveta Hrdlikova match. It was at the beginning of the second set. The match had some really good rallies. We sat next to what looked like Maggie’s coach and a personal friend. They were speaking very fast and in another language, so we did not know what they were saying. After the match, Maggie went behind her chair and was giving autographs, when out of NOWHERE, a girl, maybe 10, goes ‘Can I have your racquet?’ Maggie replies ‘I can’t give you a new one, but I can give you a broken one.’ We got autographs, complimented her on a nice match, and left. But before we left, another little girl asked for a broken racquet. Maggie said she didn’t have one with her, but they could go WITH HER, INTO the LOCKER ROOM! Then, a little boy asked her for her armbands. As we were walking around, we saw Maggie, the lady I sat next to, a security guard, and the 2 little girls walk with Maggie into the locker room. I was so jealous! Maggie is WAY too nice!! She literally stood there for 8 minutes giving autographs for everyone! Later on that day, I saw the 2 girls, sisters, both carrying around Yonex racquets! I was even more jealous!
After that, we went over to watch Chanda Rubin play the third set. We were sitting across the court when all of the sudden, Chanda was about to serve and she just turned around, and threw up. I was thinking, ‘Oh no, not now Chanda!’ Before the last game ended, we walked out to wait for her. As we were waiting, we saw Elena Dementieva walk by. We wanted her autograph, but she would NOT give them. We followed her out and she walked very close to the wall so you couldn’t get in her way. A photographer was taking pictures and ran into the door of the Fila store because Elena was walking so close to the wall. Very rude!!!
When we got back, we saw Ferarro and di Pasquale walk by. The security guards like moved me into a corner. We were still waiting for Chanda when they walked by and my black magic marker was out and ready. When di Pasquale walked by, he walked right into my pen! Now, there is a large black line on his racquet bag! I’m guessing that when this happened Chanda walked by, because we waited and waited and she never came. They said she walked by before. I wanted her autograph and I wanted to tell her I wished she got better.
We had to get home, so we left at about 4. All in all, I would say we had a VERY good time at the US Open! In addition to getting Tracy Austin and Bud Collins’s autographs last year, we got Elena Likhovtseva, Lina Krasnoroutskaya, Nathalie Tauziat, Nathalie Dechy, Sandrine Testud, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Meghann Shaughnessy, Anke Huber, Ashley Harkleroad, Maggie Maleeva, and Kim Clijsters. It was a VERY fun time this year and I can’t wait until next year!!!

Let's see. I have met:
Amanda Coetzer - a couple of times. She's nice, but kinda quiet...we just talked a little about her matches, and I got her autograph a couple of times.
Domi van Roost - she was practicing before the AO (during the AO quallies), and there were only about 20 or so of us watching. When her practice finished, I got her autograph, but my pen wasn't working, and she was so apologetic (like it was her fault the pen wasn't working) - that'll teach me to buy cheap markers! lol That day I also got Jenn Cap. and Tauziat's autograph, coz they were practicing there too.
Sandrine Testud at last years AO. I got her autograph after she had finished training. She was standing by the railing of the court watching whoever was on next (can't remember who it was), and there was no one else around, so I just walked up and asked for her autograph. She seemed a bit surprised actually!
Wayne Ferreira. I got his autograph after one of his matches in '00. He signed my cross-stitch that I did of the South African flag, and he was talking to me about it, saying it was nice and did I make it. I said I was going to try and get Amanda to sign it and then get it framed, and he said good luck with it! hehe *sigh he's so nice, wish he hadn't retired!*
Patty Schnyder - I've got her autograph a few times, and I have my pic with her. She is so sweet. I've talked to her on many occasions, and I'm friends with her brother. I used to have a web-site on her (I haven't updated it for a while ), and her brother made contact with me by e-mail, and we used to always chat on icq, and so I know him quite well. He's really nice too! Anyway, so I see Patty at the AO each year - for the past three years we have talked to each other a bit. Usually about her matches, how she's going, how her bro's going, what I've been up to. General talk! hehe Dementieva was with her last year when I was talking to her after their hitting session together, and she was kinda standing there like... uhh... what are you guys doing? And then I asked Patty for the pic with her, and once I had it, about 20 other people came and asked for it, and her coach looked at me and goes "thanks, I have a new job, I should have charged for this!". I said to him "Yeah, you'd be rich by now!". (And then I was like "Sorry Patty - didn't mean to waste 15 mins of your time with everyone asking for pics!" hehe).
ahhhhh... now I can't wait till I go to Canberra on Saturday, and then to the Aussie Open!
