This may be her biggest test of the year apart from her Wimbledon defence. Good luck Masha she will go in with a lot of expectations i hope she can do well. A Quarter final would be nice on clay anything after that is awesome but Masha is great at suprising us

A look at her draw:

R1 v Linetskaya- should be a tough match but Masha should scrape through.

R2 v Pin or Rezai- looks like a easy match for Maria

R3 v Suarez(26)/Chakvetadze-

if Chakvetadze fights hard she'll be a tough opponent but Sharapova's experience will pull her through to R4.

if Paola is at her best Masha could be eliminated early in '05 after losing last year's QF 1-6 3-6 to Paola. Paola's season has been plagued by injuries, including a left abductor strain last week in Hamburg. If fit and healthy Paola's clay-court guile could really trouble Maria.

R4 v Sugiyama(26)/Dechy(13) Both players are capable of an upset but will struggle to compete with Maria.

QF v Henin-Hardenne (13) Masha will need her 'A' game here. Henin is the best on clay in the lead up, but Sharapova could hit her off the court, if she makes mistakes and lets Henin in she could be in trouble.

SF v Mauresmo (3) Masha is just simply a better player. Too strong mentally and physically. With the added pressure of a home semi Mauresmo will be totally overroared by Masha's relentless attack.

F v Davenport(1), Clijsters(14), Schnyder(8), Dementieva(4), Venus(11) or Myskina(5)
(clearly the top half is easier)

Davenport's questionable record on clay especially at RG although she's seeded 1 she's far from being the favourite. Has had some great matches w/Sharapova but I wouldn't expect a 1 v 2 final here. If it happens Masha has a mental edge over Davenport and will win in 3.

Clijsters like Davenport is carrying injury into the tournament. She was impressive on hard courts, but it remains to be seen whether she'll carry that form to RG. She has a good draw in R1 and R2, so she can build momentum. Clijsters would be a tough opponent for Masha. Kim's movement enables he too run down Maria's big groundies, and she can return them with interest. Consistency is an issue for both players. Both are mentally tough, but come crunch time Maria's grit will prevail over Clijsters talent.

Schnyder, seeded 8, she carries great form into the tournament, surpassed only by Henin-Hardenne. Patty beat Masha in Rome last week and is a very dangerous player. Who knows what would happen?

Dementieva/ Myskina last year's finalists may provide a challenge but don't carry any real form into RG.

Prediction - R3 or F?
Sharapova definately has the tougher half of the draw, form-wise (Mauresmo and Henin). She may drop a set in R1 v Linetskaya but will romp through R2. If she gets past Paola Suarez (26) in round 3 I think she'll go far. Henin-Hardenne looms in the QF and Mauresmo in SF.
