Injured Williams falls at first hurdle in Dubai

DUBAI : Venus Williams will be off the WTA Tour for at least three weeks with a recurrence of an old stomach injury which worsened during a dismal 5-7, 6-7 loss to Italy's Silvia Farina Elia in the first round of the Dubai Open.

Venus, who had also been playing with both wrists strapped, acquired a further conspicuous bandage halfway throught the match, on her right hand where she had a troublesome blister.

However during an error-ridden display it was hard to know whether the bandage helped or hindered the elder Williams sister, or even whether she was in the right frame of mind to compete.

"I was smiling because my stomach hurts, and my hand's going crazy and still somehow I was in the match," she said.

"But even if I had won the second set I don't know if I would have played the third and if I had won the match I don't know if I would have stayed in the tournament.

"I thought why am I out here. To the people who came to support me - I'm sorry I wasn't well."

Venus admitted that it was similar to the injury she had during the 2003 Wimbledon final, and that unless there was a marked improvement she might miss the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami, starting on March 23.

All this was a significant disappointment to the Dubai tournament which had managed a rare coup - the presence of both Williams sisters in a tournament outside a Grand Slam.

With the sisters drawn in the same half there had been hopes of their first competitive meeting for 19 months; instead spectators will have to console themselves with the first appearance in this tournament of Serena Williams, who starts on Wednesday against either Elena Bovina of Russia or Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Venus had been too upset with her physical condition to give much credit to Farina Elia. The former top 20 player from Italy sometimes played steadily and sensibly, but found it hard to cope with the unpredictable fluctuations of her high profile opponent, who lost the first three games limply, made a surge to get back to 5-5, and then played another bad game to drop serve immediately.

Farina Elia just about managed to serve out for the set, saving a break point in the process, but it was harder for her to contain another desperate surge in the second set from Venus, who found her survival instincts galvanising her once again.

The fifth seed came from 2-5 down to lead 6-5 and was within a couple of points of levelling at a set-all in the next game. Even more disconcerting for Farina Elia, four match points came and went as Venus hung on hard from 2-6 down in the tie-breaker to reach 6-6.

But the former world number one blew all her efforts with two uncharacteristic shots - a backhand counter-drive into the net after some consistent rallying by Farina Elia, and a bizarre volleying error from a good position on match point.

There is a 50/50 chance that Venus will play in Miami. For starters, she will be ranked in the top 16 by the time the draw comes out for Miami which means that she will get a first round bye. Because of that, she will not start until Wednesday or Thursday, giving her injury enough time to heal.

Miami doesn't start until mid-week, so she'd be off til probably Friday.

That's true with Indan Wells, but not Miami. Unless there was a change in the schedule from the past few years, first round starts March 21 and second round starts March 23.

Rest up Vee, and be ready for Miami.

Well, that definitely explains things. Though I never had a question as to her motivation. ;)

However, that said, I feel it crucial that Venus take a full 6 - 8 months off to fully regain her health, and more importantly, strengthen that injured area. Muscle tears are no freakin joke. Found that out first hand.

Whoever her doctors, trainers, handlers are, should be telling her this.
If this injury continues, she the Queen can kiss her stellar career in tennis good-bye.

I hope she doesn't show for Miami if she's not 100%...I want her physically fit for the clay season.

Right now I think Venus has more of a pull, rather than a tear. It is probably more of a strain, but either way it goes I think she should just wait to come back after Miami, because those things tear quickly. I toar a muscle in my chest lastyear, and I am still not 100% yet. Even with physical thearpy. GET WELL SOON V.

Damn her injuries.. Damn them all!!!

This is the reason why she hasn't won a slam imho because she keeps getting injured and it is hard to come back 100% full of confidence!! It is like stopping and then starting.. it gets to become a hassle!!

I am going to pray that Venus has a 2005 CLAY AND GRASS AND HARDCURT year and the WHOLE 2006 injury FREE YEAR!!

Venus has had bad luck ever since Gumbycat and I were thrown out of the Venus and Serena chatroom for no obvoius apparent reason at all! I gotta find a way back into that damn room I gotta give my girl much needed luck!

Poor Venus :( All these injuries are so frustrating. When she begins to feel her game finally getting back to where she thought it was, this haunting abdominal injury peaks out. Grr! Just hope you get better soon, girl

She really doesn't have to play Miami. She should just focus on the clay season. If she's going to get far in any slam this year, then it's probably going to be Roland Garros.

She should take a long time off, to be really fit and put things into proper perspective.

Myabe revert to the approach she took at the end of 99, when she took months off to resther wrists, and maybe her psyche because when she came back, her mental approach was such a turnaround!

Well it's obvious that Venus now needs to change her serve or this will happen again. The comments before were on her needing to change her serve to be in the top 5. Now she really needs to do something drastic on her serve for her tennis survival. Ab pulls or tears are no. If she doesn't change her serve, they're going to happen more often and just get worse.

I hope she can recover before Miami. But I don't want her to come back if she's not fully recovered and then injure herself worse.

Maybe they did tell her but she insisted on playing because she had made a promise and she was fullfilling her obligations.

The first 32 seeds get a bye, and the seeded players won't play until Friday the 25th or Saturday the 26th. That's nearly four weeks - hopefully enough time for her to heal :)

This is very confusing to me...She is ranked 9th or so...why would her seeding or ranking be a factor?

I think and hope that this injury is not as bad as most people think. Venus herself said that in Antwerp. That it's the same injury she had in 2003, but that she would not be out for six months again.

Get well soon Venus tennis needs you :yeah:.

:( It is true isn't it? I mean Venus doesn't even get a chance to get her game back as just when she seems to be settling back into a good rhythm, an injury seems to pop it's ugly head up again   oh why are my two favourite players ( Venus and Chanda) ALWAYS plagued by injuries !!!?!! :fiery: My heart goes out to all Vee and Chanda fans everywhere, it isn't easy for us (or them).
