Well she's 18, started in the top 200 this year and is already in the top 100 right now. She's small (1.55m or something) and has a game similar to Amanda Coetzer. And she's erving for the match against Kuznetsova right now  (6-4 5-2)

Somebody watching this match? Svetlana isn't playing that great but that girls brings so many balls back! Will she be the 'new star' of 2005?

Ok she won 6-4 6-2

Mirza has alot of game. Reminds me alot of Sharapova. I'd love to see those 2 play each other sometime soon.

Serena had to play unbelievable to beat her easily in the AO and she will probably face her in Dubai so it will be a very interesting match.

ok but Mirza doesn't have a serve so I don't think she can get into the top 10 or so?!

Mirza does have a big serve. It's still a bit inconsistent at times but its a BIG serve, defenetley a huge weapon when it's on. Maybe not Serena, Molik Davenport but a big asset.

Wouldn't say Sania's game is similar to A. Coetzer. Sania hits way harder. She's prospect, think she'll make it to the semis. Slim chance of becoming the new star of 2005 Very curious how she will do on the American/European tour.

ok she hits the ball harder than Amanda did but she doesn't have real weapons imo but brings everything back (ok that's also a weapon :D)

@Bram: that's what they said on Eurosport and she was about 20cm smaller than Kuzzi ;)

The WTA misprinted the metric height as 1.53, while stating her correct height in the American system as 5'7" or 1.70, and her game is not at all similar to Coetzer if you saw the AO 3rd round

Her movement is still a little slow but she hits hard. I doubt she'll beat Jankovic or Farina Ella in her next match. It's been a great week for her though. Congrats Mirza.

Sania most definitely has a weapon.. one of the biggest forehands in the game. She is also not nearly as good a mover as Coetzer, she knows that her fitness and serve are what she needs to improve to make it into the game's elite.

Sania achieved a great victory today. She has impressive skills. She is a future star. Let's see how she does in the next round.

She did not so good @ junior level.. She never reached any QF in the junior grandslams... She lost to a lot of pretty bad girls, so this amazes me a lot. The reason she does so well in rankings, is also because of the weak tournaments she has played! Wanna see her playing Indian Wells or something..

I think her ground strokes are not less solid than Sharapova's. And she is 5'7 1/2''(as wta official website) and it's about 172cm in metric system.

Yeah its amazing how hard she hits and that forehand is a bomb. Her backhand was on fire too today. :)

Even though I did not see this match, I heard that the crowd was delerious in their support for Sania Mirza, against Kuznetsova in Dubai.

I am sooo psyched for her now. I only saw her play against Serena in the 3rd round of AO, and she did pretty well in the second set.

Sania, you REPRESENT!!!

Proud to be an Indian.

Sania and Serena and Sharapova....the S-3. I know, I know, Sania is just a rookie but let me get carried away for the time being. Hope that she will get into the top 20 in the next year.

Kuze is still a very streaky player....I can see how this could happen against a consistant baseliner.

The Indian crowd at the Dubai match was very rowdy. They seems to have really put Svetlana off.

Players should never allow a crowd to do this to their game.

Sania Mirza was pelting the balls back at Kuznetsova. Sania hits the ball really hard, Like Myskina and Hantuchova does.

Sania played very well today, but I am not a fan.

I really cant believe you are comparing Mirza's powerful baseline style to that of Amanda Coetzer. I never saw Amanda hit forehands like that.

Maybee a year ago someone on the forum asked "witch unlikely nation is next to produce a top female tennis player"

Thinking of Sania Mirza and how she dominated the 10k and junior events in Asia some of us said INDIA. :o

poot Svetlana never found out of her play today

She's doing wery well this year, 3rd round at AO, 1st tournament won and now this victory... however, I've seen her only in this match and so I can't express an opinion... she's to improve very much the service, but has very strong strokes from che baseline, and she's also no fear, surely she will rise very much in rankings quickly!

Down 0-4 and a point to go 0-5, Sania roars back to beat world #7 Svetlana 4 & 2 - with a twisted ankle/compromised mobility nonetheless! This is a player who really goes for their shots. One thing's for sure, she's bound to improve upon her #98 WTA ranking quite a bit :)

I don't think she's like Coetzer either...

I've only seen her match against Serena till now still (thanks to the lack of TV coverage on tennis  ) and I think there's nothing wrong with the serve... it's just unique with a high ball toss... in fact, other than a mini hiccup, she held serve all the way against serena in the second set ( i think first set was all about nerves and once she cracked the zero she felt better)

Her back hand and the way she moves to hit it really reminds me of Tanasugarn (in case you don't know, the backhand is Tammy's best shot as she can direct it well and hit with accuracy), however, Sania's nice forehand I can't really find a comparision, but it's very nice and accurate...

And her style is really all out attacking... I think that's the reason why sometimes she trails early cos she hasn't gotten used or warmed up enough yet... so when she gets used to hitting, it's quite tough to defeat her...

Really a lot of potential!!! :) I'm so glad that the two finalist in the Asian Championship are making waves (even though Li Na seems a bit shaky these days, but she's still on her way up!) Go Sania!!!

I found a picture at gettyimages of Mirza shaking hands with Serena.

Serena is leaning slightly forward and to one side and yet is still a couple of inches taller.

Makes it seem like Sania must be a similar height to Hingis or slightly below that.

I'd say the reported height of 5'7 is about right, or maybe 5'6".

The Profile on the WTA site is correct on the Height in inches reading which is 5"7 1/2 but wrong on the Centimeters...it should be 169 Centimeters or 1.69 meters and not 153 centimeters or 1.53 meters as it says on her profile on the WTA site.....They must have done a calculation mistake....
