Williams though blamed her defeat by Farina Elia on injuries.

"Blisters were a factor, but mostly my stomach wasn't that great," she said.

"I did it in the last tournament in the semi-finals, and I was serving at 40% in the final.

"The first time I served again was Sunday and there wasn't a lot I could do out there. When your serve isn't good it throws the rest of your game off too."

She will wait to see how she recovers before deciding whether to take part in the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami, starting on 21 March.

Then you should not have played, Venus! :fiery:

If this is the same injury that took her out for 6 months, I think she should be very careful about playing the minute she feels a twinge!

This injury affected her serve at the Proximus game 1 week ago and now it affected her today. What sort of medical advice is she getting: that it's OK to play with pain? That it's not so bad as to force her to stop altogether? Does this mean that Venus will have to get used to playing with pain for a while?

Please take care of yourself, Venus!

but why is she playing then?
Especially with that abdominal injury!
that injury can definetly be carreer threatening
I don't get it? Either she isn't injured (which I don't believe!)
either she is making the same mistake she recently said she would never make again (i.e. playing whilst injured)
Venus! Rest!!!!! You knw how long it takes to heal an abdominal injury :fiery:

Honey, if you insist on playing wrap a corsette around your abs, or at the very least some Saran Wrap. :o

Williams said even if she had won the second set, she might not have played the third.

"I really don't know if I would have played the third, and if I would have won the match I really don't think I would have continued the tournament," she said.

"Now I'll have to rest it. My next tournament is in Miami in about 20 days. If I'm really fit and ready to go then I'll play. If I'm not, then I won't."

so basically she's been injured for two years now...

either she can take a serious amount of time off and recover or she can play like this for the rest of her career

Hmm.. I doubt it.. if this was really that bad injury that took her out 6 months I'm sure that she wouldn't play. I know that she loves Dubai very much.. but even than she shouldn't have played. And before the match I read that she said that she was 100% healty to play! Maybe those blisters were a factor.. tough I don't think that the injuries were the factor for her loss today!

Well, during the match she surely touched her stomach!
And in some moment she kinda screamed in pain (so it seemed to me) after playing her forehand in the jump! :(

Too bad we won't be seeing a sisters semi now. It would have been interested to see how they 'd act in a non-grandslam match against eachother.

I thought she said she had learnt her lesson last year and would never play injured again. If you know you're injured, and with that stomach that you still can't get your game back up to now, why on earth would you play this match? Venus really keeps me guessing.

Poor Venus. She's had soooooooooooo many injuries throughout her career. Her wrists, her abds, her leg. It's so unfortunate.

You have to understand how much flack Venus gets when she pulls out of a tournament. She probably felt pressure to play. They advertised both sisters being there very hard.

Well she's never played up to her standards at Dubai so would it have mattered? Honestly it didn't look like either player wanted to win today. Venus because she knew she probably wasn't going to be able to play the next match and Farina Ella because she hasn't played well as of late. Maybe Farina Ella can get some confidence from beating a injured player. Maybe Venus will take this match as a sign to look at her game a little more.

Maybe next time it will be like 27.964% ??

Honestly people.
*sigh*

Sometimes I wonder why people even care so much about what Venus did or didn't do, or how she should have handled herself in certain situations.
As Williams fans, we should realize that Venus is doing what she needs to do to maintain her tournament and WTA responsibilities. Who's to say that she didn't go to the tournament director and inform them of her injuries? We just don't know what happens every waking moment in a player's life. They have business dealings that even their own parents aren't privy to. And some fans think they know what Venus should have done?! Riiightt....
I can understand the haters saying the things that they say, because who really gives a f**k what they think. But I've noticed that Venus fans are some of the most fair-weather !*@% on this board.

For me, I can admire Venus honoring her contracts, because let's face it...
If you are getting hundreds of thousands of dollars to appear somewhere, with both parties understanding that it will be for a limited amount of time, you can't tell me that you wouldn't do exactly what Venus did. ;)

When has Venus ever admitted defeat to any other reason besides "injury"???

Whatever.

She should not have played then period.
And it still doesn't explain why she committed 70 unforced errors.

And it seems that she is ALWAYS injured (especially after losses though).
She must be doing something wrong in practice and preparation. Why does she have blisters after a week off? Never heard of taping?

All this sounds very unprofessional, sorry.

Ahhh I see so as a Venus "fan" you think it's ok that she risks injury for a little bit of money that she already has to begin with?

SO who is being the most fair-weathered &^%* on this board?

Julia, now I'm curious, who IS your favorite player currently on tour?

Unlike some, I'm not an obsessed fan of one or two players:

Martina Navratilova
Maria Sharapova
Monica Seles (MIA)
Amy Frazier
Amelie Mauresmo
Jennifer Capriati
Justine Henin-Hardenne

Like most others, I'm very shocked that venus lost this against silvia. but she should not go on the court if she is suffering...that is just going to ask for trouble!
