I was just looking at the updated rankings, and some players are surprisingly low, and falling. For example:

101 Petra Mandula
108 Marie Gayanay Mikaelian
110 Emmanuelle Gagliardi
117 Rita Grande
121 Magui Serna
165 Angelique Widjaja
173 Tina Pisnik
187 Cara Black
198 Lina Krasnoroutskaya
228 Julia Vakulenko

 at all of these!! What have these players been up to???

This is a good example of why it's never a good idea to pay attention to a couple wins over top players, as opposed to tournament wins. Some of these players looked really good in a televised match, or maybe beat top player once or twice, but in reality, they were never that good. as for why they're ranked where they are specifically, can't speak to all of them, but ....

110 Emmanuelle Gagliardi - Not a particularly low ranking for her. Her career high is #42. She's never finished a year in the top fifty. Her serve is an extreme vulnerability.

117 Rita Grande - She'll be 30 in three weeks. Everyone isn't Nav

121 Magui Serna - She's always been fat, and that's always held her back.

198 Lina Krasnoroutskaya - She only has ten tournaments. Injuries are a constant problem. She only played one match after Wimbledon last year. She's going to have a lot of trouble getting her ranking up til after Wimbledon, even though she only has 10 tournaments, because the points she has will be rolling off.

Widjaja has been injured and hasnt played for months. Same with Grande. They should both be at least top 50 if healthy.

No, because her fall isn't surprising.

That's very true, but she's always managed to to stay a top 30-50 player in the past despite her weight. How she has managed to end up unable to win a match and at #121 in the world is very strange, I mean I know she had an injury this time last year, but still ...

Serna had a lot of injuries last year and lost her confidence in her game.
she is a very talented player and i'm sure she will be on top soon, she deserves it

I hate hat Lina has had it so rough, she is such a talent, and could be right up there with the other Russians by now...!

Also missing these players having a higher ranking:
Adriana Serra Zanetti
Rossana De Los Rios

Pisnik got hurt at the end of the year ... started 2004 ranked around 30 and fell down to 120 at the end of the year ... really, really bad form!

I guess you can include anna K's career in this bracket, never fulfilled her potential, for obvious reasons

Marie-Gayanay is just on her way back...

After Wimbledon she had a operation on her ankle, and lost much kilos, she came back at Hasselt..
And she said in November that her goal is going back into top 100 in March, she is nearly in...

Rita Grande hasn't played since the US Open, she's hoping to be back for the clay court season. :)
She is currently injured with tennis elbow.

Well, to me it is, but of course I'm not Mr. Knows-it-all crazillo. :)
