Pennetta Captures Second Title in Two Weeks

ACAPULCO, Mexico - Flavia Pennetta captured a second straight singles title on Sunday, winning the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL presented by HSBC. Pennetta, who last Sunday won a clay court title in Bogota, came back after dropping the first set and trailing a break in the second to defeat Ludmila Cervanova, 36 75 63.

It has been a remarkable two weeks for the Italian player, who celebrated her 23rd birthday on Friday. Last week, Pennetta faced few problems in racing to the title in Bogota, defeating qualifier Lourdes Dominguez Lino in the final.

This week, Pennetta had a few more challenges to reach the championship match. After reaching the quarterfinals with victories against Julia Schruff and Mariana Diaz-Oliva, Pennetta overcame a one set deficit to defeat Lilia Osterloh.

She then reached the finals with a 62 61 win against Antonella Serra Zanetti. In the championship match, Cervanova took the first set and was up a break, but couldn't hold on as the Italian player got herself back into the match and on the path to victory.

The victory took Pennetta one step further than last year's event where she finished as runner-up to Iveta Benesova.

Pennetta has now won 15 straight matches on clay, dating back to her title in Sopot last year. Her last loss on a clay surface came in the finals at Palermo last year, where she fell to Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Cervanova was playing in her second career Tour final and first since Casablanca in 2004. Prior to this week, the Slovak player had not won a main draw match all season. She did miss two weeks of play due to an illness before returning to action last week in Bogota.

In the doubles final, No.4 seeds Alina Jidkova and Tatiana Perebiynis won their first title as a team, defeating the unseeded duo of Rosa Maria Andres Rodriguez and Conchita Martinez Granados, 75 63.

It was only the fifth time the Russian-Ukrainian duo have taken the court as a team and leave Acapulco with only one set loss during their run to the title.

The victory was the first career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title for Jidkova, while Perebiynis now has three career doubles titles.

Andres Rodriguez and Martinez Granados were playing their first Tour final as a team.

Excellent - i think this will be one of many tournament wins this year for Flavia - I'm pretty sure she can win tournaments such as Estoril, Palmero, and Budapest too.

Congrats Flavia. Please promise me that you won't be another Anna Smashnova: a former top 20 player who only got there by winning every Teir III, IV, and V clay court event in the WTA circuit.
