There are a lot of players like Capriati and the Williams sisters who have proved themselves after being hyped by the media, but which players have failed to live up to the hype???

I can think of one - Ashely Harkelroad, she had some great results, but not enough and her career was way too short.

This was probably the reason for their lack of results. :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Players hardly control the hype around them. Most of the time it's the media :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

This thread should die. :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Lina Krasnoroutskaya:sad:

She dominated as a junior, but couldn't get over the hump as a pro.

Alex Stevenson never really delivered either...

Not really fair, in either case. Lina has been in the Top Thirty, but hit by repeated injuries. And while admittedly inconsistent, Alexandra has been in the Top twenty and been a Wimbledon semi-finalist and defeated several top players, but again, her career has been blighted by injury. And also: were either really hyped before they started playing? I don't think so....

Lucic.

:(

she was wimbledon semi-finalist and had two titles. she beat the likes of seles, pierce, coetzer and tauziat whilst they were all top 10.

she should have achieved more!

doubt she will come back now

What's 'deliver'? Did nothing? Or didn't live up to the hype?

Kournikova obviously didn't live up to the hype. But making the top ten isn't
'nothing'.

Stevenson didn't live up to the hype. But making the top twenty isn't nothing either.

Thanks for bringing that up Volcana. By "deliver" I mean live up to the hype or live up to expectations.

Hype? There really was no hype around Alexandra Stevenson UNTIL she was a semifinalist at Wimbledon. She created the hype herself from her own results, (that along with the leaking of her birth certificate to the press). After the Wimbledon run, she had quite a few wins over top 20 players and maintained a decent top 30 ranking, became injured, then fell to the bottom of the WTA rankings. She then focused on her game and fitness, and in 2002 by the year end she placed herself in the top 20. She's scored wins against Dementieva, Coetzer, Myskina, Capriati, Dokic, Hantuchova, Zvonereva and more...

Alex's results created her hype. Honestly, beside hardcore American tennis fans, who before 1999 heard of Alexandra Stevenson?

That's easy....Kournikova! She was so hyped and never delivered. Not even one title! To this day, she is still hyped...for her looks, definitely not for her tennis anymore.

Does anyone know if Alexus Jones really exists? Or is her website a sham?

Lucic and Anna both made the semi finals of WIMBLEDON, even
Dokic and ... Alex to a point did deliver on a promise
they simply never finished the deal.

Now if your talking about pure hype with empty promises with
no results it would be Ashley and Monique Viele.

^^yes but Anna and Mirjana shouldve done much more than just one semi of a slam, they both shouldve been top players for many years...they definitely fir into the category of hyped that didnt deliver!

also to a lesser extent...Kaia Kanepi, Tatiana Perebyinis, Rossana Del Los Rios (not her fault of course), Nancy Feber, and DEFINITELY Alex Stevenson

Do you get the idea that dominating juniors transition into the pro game is very stressful and unsettling? Perhaps because they are so used to dominating that they feel like failures if they lose in the pro game more frequently early on. Its as if their psyche can't rebound during that critical transition phase.

I blame that on coaching and a lack of emotional support. The technical tennis preparation was heir appearant, but emotional preparation is often lacking in these types of cases.

Least we not forget that Anna Kournikova is a Grand Slam champion in doubles. Its not as though she couldn't play tennis, but her successes came in doubles. Most people would give up a limb to call themselves a Grand Slam tourney champion, even if it is doubles.

It got Pam Shriver into the Hall of Fame...word.
