1.Sharapova (SF OZ Open, W Tokyo and Doha)
2.S.Williams (W OZ Open)
3.Molik (W Sydney, F Doha, SF Antwerp, QF OZ Open)
4.Davenport (F Tokyo and OZ Open)
5.Mauresmo (W Antwerp, F Paris, SF Doha, QF OZ Open)

Maybe Serena should be on top, but she only played 1 tournament this year. So i put her 2nd.

Molik has been impressive this year. Who would have thought she would be no 8 in the world??

Davenport and Mauresmo... this 2 top ranked players are always consistent almost everytime they play.

for me, shahar peer with three QF is way better than all five of them - she still needs to learn how to play with the big girls - and has proved that, while i would have expected your top five to achieve thier results.
for the same reason - mirza, krajicek and more are making far more important steps on tour.

that said - those five are the best of the crop, and you can't go better than the best.

Until someone wins the french Serena is on top of any list like this. It simply puts your list into questions when the only grandslam winner this year does not come in at number one. Period.

Go back and do your list again until you get it right.

When winning a SLAM places 2nd and lower even, you pretty much have to conclude that it's the person being judged, and not the result.

Or you could look at it this way, Maria has a record of 13 - 1 (including 2 tournament victories) whereas Serena has a record of 8 - 1 ( 1 tournament victory), I believe the initial list is spot on.

Since apparently this thread is not going by points, which STILL put Serena on top for this year, I'll factor in HEAD-TO-HEAD, which ALSO puts Serena on top.

1. Serena
2. Sharapova
3. Davenport
4. Molik
5. Mauresmo

Serena over Sharapova because
a) Serena won a major
b) Serena beat Sharapova en route to winning said major in their only meeting this year

Sharapova over Davenport because
a) Sharapova has won 2 titles to Davenport's 0
b) Sharapova beat Davenport in their only meeting this year

Davenport over Molik because
a) Davenport reached a GS and Tier I final, which is better than a Tier II title
b) Davenport beat Molik in their only meeting this year

Molik over Mauresmo because
a) Molik's win over Venus came in a GS (other than that their results are identical)

IF it were your match, a match you never even got into the court to play it does not and never counts as a loss.
Although i still think the player to beat at this moment, as it was at the Australian Open is Maria Sharapova.
Keeping mind since november 04, she is holding the Masters, semis at Aopen (barely losing to Serena) and a Tier I and Tier II title.

Again if you count since June last year, Sharapova has beaten Serena in 2 very important matches so far and lost once this year. Maria is the one with the momentum behind her, not Serena. Serena is on her way back to the top.
Also overall i would rank Molik over Mauresmo at this point since Molik won a Tier II, reached a Final and had Semis last week. Mauresmo has a win in Tier II and a semis this week. And they both share the same performance at the Australian Open.... But not because beating Venus or not latetly. Right now Venus is on a 10 months title drought (12 events) .

I don't see how you can meaningfully separate Amelie and Alicia at the moment. They are 1-1 head to head and have similar results. Still, I'll err on the side of not playing favourites and put Alicia fourth, taking into account that she's done all this while also having great doubles successes ... with a caveat about Amelie. Serena has to be first - she's won a slam and beaten everyone she's had to play. Masha has to be second - she beat Lindsay in Tokyo and lost to the winner of the AO, as did Lindsay ... and she put up a better performance against Serena than Lindsay did. I don't put any weight on the fact that Lindsay met Serena in the final and Masha in the semi, which is only the luck of the draw.

Right now, the strongest players are

1. Serena
2. Masha
3. Lindsay
4. Alicia
5. (*or equal 4.) Amelie

Alicia is the big surprise on this list, but I agree that she belongs there.

I'd say:

1. Maria Sharapova
2. Serena Williams
3= Amélie Mauresmo
3= Alicia Molik
5. Lindsay Davenport

I just can't separate Molik and Mauresmo. And Davenport is below them because she seems to be turning into Always The Bridesmaid this year. (Get yourself a title, Lindsay!)

it's funny, when serena doesn't win a slam (04) it's seen as such big gap between her and the others that have won. and now that she's the only slam winner, winning every other tournament carries more weight. some people just don't want to give serena the credit that she's earned. if you look at the championship race which counts all points from Jan. 1 until present you will see serena sitting on top. people lets try our best to not let 'our' negative feelings toward serena reflect in how she's doing so far this year.

Serena has the best year so far. She won a Slam. Period. Masha is doing well. But I rather had her place that serve on matchpoint two inches to the left rather than having her won those two titles she's won since.

here's an answer from an objective source:

The Porsche Year-To-Date race from January 1st - February 28 2005
1. Serena Williams 1,261 pts
2. Maria Sharapova 1,201 pts
3. Lindsay Davenport 1004 pts
4. Alicia Molik 900 pts
5. Amelie Mauresmo 851 pts

the championships race doesn't include all the nonsense that some posters here wish counted, the bottom line is that serena has earned more points this year than any other player, like it or not!!

1) Sharapova
2) S.Williams
3) Davenport
4) Molik
5) Mauresmo

Sharapova over Serena because it's true that Serena has defeated Masha and won a slam but:
I) She has gained almost all her points from A.Open, and she retired from the other tournament that she played, so she won 1 out of 2, whereas Masha has reached at least the SF in all the tourneys she has played and has won 2 out of 3, and so she's been more constant;
II) The match between Masha and Serena was very balanced, Serena's been very tough in winning it, but Masha also had 3 matchpoints, so she could have also won it.
However, they're very close, so 1st and 2nd place could even be tied...

tennisjunky

in this sport that we all love and follow certain events cary more weight than others. The biggest win that a player can acheive is to win a slam, not to win a tier one or have match points and almost win! i love sharapova and am a big fan of hers, if she wins another tier one then i would move her ahead of serena but right now she is still viewed as second to serena and the 'Porsche Standing' support my way of seeing things (the logical and unbiased way):

1. Serena Williams 1,261 pts
2. Maria Sharapova 1,201 pts
3. Lindsay Davenport 1004 pts
4. Alicia Molik 900 pts
5. Amelie Mauresmo 851 pts
