Maria turns 18 on April 19. It's a race to #1 before then for Maria.
Because that would be a great birthday present to herself.

Making #1 on the WTA computer for the first time would be a major accomplishment for Masha. But I would be most happy because she can get making #1 for the first time out of the way early in her career. Winning grand slams is much more important than being ranked #1. And I want Masha's focus in her career to be on the grand slams much moreso than the #1 ranking.

Maria deserves it but I hope Lindsay can stay nr.1 for a couple of more months so that she can be seeded nr.1 for ROland Garros.

If she does, she'll lose it after Wimbledon. But she'll likely get it back by the US Open.

Maria could very well become #1 by April.

Maria has a chance to be #1 because she plays quite a consistent schedule where she usually makes the finals or wins.

Serena in my opinion could easily get to #1 this year but she does not seem to play enough tournaments. I know she was sick in Paris, so I hope she does well in Dubai cuz she can stack up alot of points there. If she does NOT pull out of any of her scheduled events (which never happens) she has a great shot at #1 as well.

Serena and Maria are definitely the top two players in the world right now. Both have grand slams under their belt. I'd say that Maria is more deserving of the number 1 title than Serena just based on the fact that she's won more in the past 52 weeks. However, if Maria does not win the French or does not defend her Wimbledon title, then Serena should definitely sit atop the rankings. You should have a grand slam within the last 52 weeks to be considered a worthy number 1. At least thats my opinion.

Actualy, in this year, just 2 players beat Masha:
Elena DEMENTIEVA and Serena WILLIAMS
Elena match didnt count for WTA, but count for the players and that's what's matter

So, when I saw Masha, I just think the 3 players know how to beat her:
Amelie MAURESMO
Elena DEMENTIEVA
Serena WILLIAMS

And, I think that we have many good players that aren't playing that can do good matchs against her
Jen, Lena, Serena and others

I realy think that players that like rallies can be not that well for Masha, 'cause she realy dont like rallies

Seems about right. Maria looks our most consistent hard hitter. if she doesn't fade on winning positions she should beat less consistent hard hitters. Alicia today got a lot of mileage when she hit slower shots. If anyone is going to beat her it will be someone who hits even harder and who is mentally even tougher or someone who forces her to play a different style of tennis. Add Kim Jen and Justine to Nastya, Momo, Elena on your list?

Great analysis. I think this would be the only fair way to judge if Maria is really number one - beating the best players consistently. Serena did it during her run in '02-'03, and now it's Maria's turn to show that she can beat the best day in and day out.

It will be interesting to see who will be year end #1!

I agree that Maria will be number 1 before the French Open. Even if she isn't she will claim the number 1 ranking at some point during the year. She and Serena are the two best on tour right now.

Well then here is the thing, what other player is consistently beating top players? Mauresmo? Davenport? Myskina? Obviously they have tougher times beating top ranked opponents than Maria does. When was the last time Davenport beat a player in the top 4? Same with Mauresmo and Myskina. As far as I'm concerned, the only two players that have been able to consistently beat top players are Serena and Maria. Maria has in the past 52 weeks pretty much beaten every single top player except Mauresmo, who she has only played once in their career. Number 1 in the world isnt just about being able to beat everybody every single time anymore. Its about beating more top players than others, and as of now, Maria is tops on that list alongside Serena. She and Serena are head to head as even as it gets, so really whoever out of those two could be number 1.

But, after WImbledon, she's probably gonna lose it.

i dunno. I think its gonna be close between masha, serena and Lindsay this year. They are all top contenders. Lindsay doesnt really have clay points to defend this year, but maria and serena are playing excellently

I think that as the season goes on. Lindsay's hold on number one will get smaller and smaller. Right now she's fighting Mauresmo for it. She has 3 more weeks of fighting with her before finally Mauresmo has to defend loads of points. Then comes the Serena charge and then Sharapova. If she really wants to keep number one. Lindsay will have to consider playing a big tourni on red clay and Eastbourne. Sharapova just needs to be consistent, play up to her number 4 ranking and she's number one. Serena probably has to do the same.
I would love Lindsay to be a number one seed for the French Open. She's not a bad clay court player believe it or not. If she gets that number one seed for the French, who knows what can happen.

That's the only tournament where she have to defend a lot of points and i'm sure of it she gonne win it. And who say that Maria gonne get good results on gravel ? She is not a gravel player. Last year 3th R in Rome and Berlin and a quarter-final at RG
