Maybe earlier too. Not sure.
Maria Sharapova will be #1 after Rome and/or Roland GarrosGoDominique Feb 26th, 2005, 05:37 PM Maybe earlier too. Not sure. Wiggly Feb 26th, 2005, 05:38 PM How do you know that? Justeenium Feb 26th, 2005, 05:38 PM so make a thread about it Brαm Feb 26th, 2005, 05:38 PM She would be a worthy number one. Sam's Slave Feb 26th, 2005, 05:39 PM hope not. that would suck! goldenlox Feb 26th, 2005, 05:39 PM Maria turns 18 on April 19. It's a race to #1 before then for Maria. Because that would be a great birthday present to herself. the cat Feb 26th, 2005, 06:07 PM Making #1 on the WTA computer for the first time would be a major accomplishment for Masha. But I would be most happy because she can get making #1 for the first time out of the way early in her career. Winning grand slams is much more important than being ranked #1. And I want Masha's focus in her career to be on the grand slams much moreso than the #1 ranking. Libertango Feb 26th, 2005, 06:43 PM I agree. By the time she has to defend her Wimby title she'll be number one. Tati & Dani Feb 26th, 2005, 07:03 PM Sharapova number one ?? don't forget Serena Williams , she don't have many points do defend, the next months. So it's not sure that Maria gonne be number one. And i really hope not that maria gonne be number one. FrauleinSteffi Feb 26th, 2005, 07:18 PM I think Maria will be #1 this year sometime too...Serena doesnt play enough to pile up points .. Great Win Maria!:) blumaroo Feb 26th, 2005, 07:20 PM Maria deserves it but I hope Lindsay can stay nr.1 for a couple of more months so that she can be seeded nr.1 for ROland Garros. Andrew. Feb 26th, 2005, 07:20 PM If she does, she'll lose it after Wimbledon. But she'll likely get it back by the US Open. Pengwin Feb 26th, 2005, 07:22 PM She and Serena should have a close race to #1 this year. mishar Feb 26th, 2005, 09:43 PM Until and including Roland Garros, points defending approximately: Amelie, @1380 pts Lindsay, @970 pts Serena, @ 900 pts Maria, @ 540 pts maxomax Feb 26th, 2005, 09:50 PM Sharapova number one ?? don't forget Serena Williams , she don't have many points do defend, the next months. So it's not sure that Maria gonne be number one. And i really hope not that maria gonne be number one. Serena Williams has to defend her title in Miami very soon... Have you forgot it? It's a lot of points... ;) @m@nd@ Feb 26th, 2005, 09:51 PM hope she wins IW and nasdaq-100 KingA Feb 26th, 2005, 09:53 PM She and Serena should have a close race to #1 this year. Agree. They are the 2 best players on the tour at the moment! :) mishar Feb 26th, 2005, 09:57 PM Furthermore points to defend through April, end of US swing: Amelie 280 Lindsay 710 Serena 540 Maria 130 Maria could very well become #1 by April. Venus+Serena#1fan Feb 26th, 2005, 10:14 PM Maria has a chance to be #1 because she plays quite a consistent schedule where she usually makes the finals or wins. Serena in my opinion could easily get to #1 this year but she does not seem to play enough tournaments. I know she was sick in Paris, so I hope she does well in Dubai cuz she can stack up alot of points there. If she does NOT pull out of any of her scheduled events (which never happens) she has a great shot at #1 as well. Should be interesting. manu32 Feb 26th, 2005, 10:20 PM sharapova or serena ......that's the question....i am not a fan of both but they are actually best players on wta's tour.. franny Feb 26th, 2005, 10:33 PM Serena and Maria are definitely the top two players in the world right now. Both have grand slams under their belt. I'd say that Maria is more deserving of the number 1 title than Serena just based on the fact that she's won more in the past 52 weeks. However, if Maria does not win the French or does not defend her Wimbledon title, then Serena should definitely sit atop the rankings. You should have a grand slam within the last 52 weeks to be considered a worthy number 1. At least thats my opinion. le bon vivant Feb 26th, 2005, 10:37 PM Cool beans. vogus Feb 26th, 2005, 10:39 PM strong performances by Masha at two of the three: IW, Miami, and Charleston - will make her #1 by the time her birthday rolls around in mid-April. Sharapova's_Boy Feb 26th, 2005, 11:59 PM :woohoo: Chunchun Feb 27th, 2005, 12:01 AM :smash: :tape: harloo Feb 27th, 2005, 12:02 AM Maria can have the #1 spot as long as Serena whips her ass at the slams I'm fine with it. Natasc Feb 27th, 2005, 12:12 AM We have many good players that aren't playing at the momment Players that can beat Masha Actualy, in this year, just 2 players beat Masha: Elena DEMENTIEVA and Serena WILLIAMS Elena match didnt count for WTA, but count for the players and that's what's matter So, when I saw Masha, I just think the 3 players know how to beat her: Amelie MAURESMO Elena DEMENTIEVA Serena WILLIAMS And, I think that we have many good players that aren't playing that can do good matchs against her Jen, Lena, Serena and others I realy think that players that like rallies can be not that well for Masha, 'cause she realy dont like rallies So, here come's some matchs (with MAsha) that I will like to see: Dementieva x Sharapova Myskina x Sharapova Any russian x Sharapova Mauresmo x Sharapova Serena x Sharapova after that...I can say if she will or not be number one cause I think that for me say if she wil or not, I need see her playing against them who can realy piss her off of course...all this IMO ;) :yeah: Melly Flew Us Feb 27th, 2005, 12:16 AM ok. fammmmedspin Feb 27th, 2005, 12:35 AM We have many good players that aren't playing at the momment Players that can beat Masha Actualy, in this year, just 2 players beat Masha: Elena DEMENTIEVA and Serena WILLIAMS Elena match didnt count for WTA, but count for the players and that's what's matter So, when I saw Masha, I just think the 3 players know how to beat her: Amelie MAURESMO Elena DEMENTIEVA Serena WILLIAMS And, I think that we have many good players that aren't playing that can do good matchs against her Jen, Lena, Serena and others I realy think that players that like rallies can be not that well for Masha, 'cause she realy dont like rallies So, here come's some matchs (with MAsha) that I will like to see: Dementieva x Sharapova Myskina x Sharapova Any russian x Sharapova Mauresmo x Sharapova Serena x Sharapova after that...I can say if she will or not be number one cause I think that for me say if she wil or not, I need see her playing against them who can realy piss her off of course...all this IMO ;) :yeah: Seems about right. Maria looks our most consistent hard hitter. if she doesn't fade on winning positions she should beat less consistent hard hitters. Alicia today got a lot of mileage when she hit slower shots. If anyone is going to beat her it will be someone who hits even harder and who is mentally even tougher or someone who forces her to play a different style of tennis. Add Kim Jen and Justine to Nastya, Momo, Elena on your list? serenafan08 Feb 27th, 2005, 12:41 AM We have many good players that aren't playing at the momment Players that can beat Masha Actualy, in this year, just 2 players beat Masha: Elena DEMENTIEVA and Serena WILLIAMS Elena match didnt count for WTA, but count for the players and that's what's matter So, when I saw Masha, I just think the 3 players know how to beat her: Amelie MAURESMO Elena DEMENTIEVA Serena WILLIAMS And, I think that we have many good players that aren't playing that can do good matchs against her Jen, Lena, Serena and others I realy think that players that like rallies can be not that well for Masha, 'cause she realy dont like rallies So, here come's some matchs (with MAsha) that I will like to see: Dementieva x Sharapova Myskina x Sharapova Any russian x Sharapova Mauresmo x Sharapova Serena x Sharapova after that...I can say if she will or not be number one cause I think that for me say if she wil or not, I need see her playing against them who can realy piss her off of course...all this IMO ;) :yeah: Great analysis. I think this would be the only fair way to judge if Maria is really number one - beating the best players consistently. Serena did it during her run in '02-'03, and now it's Maria's turn to show that she can beat the best day in and day out. thelittlestelf Feb 27th, 2005, 12:42 AM It will be interesting to see who will be year end #1! selyoink Feb 27th, 2005, 01:24 AM I agree that Maria will be number 1 before the French Open. Even if she isn't she will claim the number 1 ranking at some point during the year. She and Serena are the two best on tour right now. franny Feb 27th, 2005, 02:14 AM Well then here is the thing, what other player is consistently beating top players? Mauresmo? Davenport? Myskina? Obviously they have tougher times beating top ranked opponents than Maria does. When was the last time Davenport beat a player in the top 4? Same with Mauresmo and Myskina. As far as I'm concerned, the only two players that have been able to consistently beat top players are Serena and Maria. Maria has in the past 52 weeks pretty much beaten every single top player except Mauresmo, who she has only played once in their career. Number 1 in the world isnt just about being able to beat everybody every single time anymore. Its about beating more top players than others, and as of now, Maria is tops on that list alongside Serena. She and Serena are head to head as even as it gets, so really whoever out of those two could be number 1. AnnArbor25 Feb 27th, 2005, 02:39 AM Well, she has been winning a lot. aNYthing Feb 27th, 2005, 04:01 AM She does have a good chance, but I dont think it will happen for some reason :o faboozadoo15 Feb 27th, 2005, 05:31 AM Maria can have the #1 spot as long as Serena whips her ass at the slams I'm fine with it. whew... her #1 status was waiting for your approval  i'm glad you can find a way to be fine with it. though i doubt we'll see serena kickin any of maria's ass... ever. power26 Feb 27th, 2005, 06:14 AM :haha:  :haha: le bon vivant Feb 27th, 2005, 06:59 AM whew... her #1 status was waiting for your approval  i'm glad you can find a way to be fine with it. though i doubt we'll see serena kickin any of maria's ass... ever. Yes, but I'm sure Maria will kick Serena's ass from here to Tallahassee, routinely, on a weekly basis, right? justine&coria Feb 27th, 2005, 09:10 AM Yeah, she will, even before. And she'd deserve it ! But, after WImbledon, she's probably gonna lose it. lindsayno1 Feb 27th, 2005, 09:42 AM i dunno. I think its gonna be close between masha, serena and Lindsay this year. They are all top contenders. Lindsay doesnt really have clay points to defend this year, but maria and serena are playing excellently Wannabeknowitall Feb 27th, 2005, 09:56 AM I think that as the season goes on. Lindsay's hold on number one will get smaller and smaller. Right now she's fighting Mauresmo for it. She has 3 more weeks of fighting with her before finally Mauresmo has to defend loads of points. Then comes the Serena charge and then Sharapova. If she really wants to keep number one. Lindsay will have to consider playing a big tourni on red clay and Eastbourne. Sharapova just needs to be consistent, play up to her number 4 ranking and she's number one. Serena probably has to do the same. I would love Lindsay to be a number one seed for the French Open. She's not a bad clay court player believe it or not. If she gets that number one seed for the French, who knows what can happen. Tati & Dani Feb 27th, 2005, 11:30 AM Serena Williams has to defend her title in Miami very soon... Have you forgot it? It's a lot of points... ;) That's the only tournament where she have to defend a lot of points and i'm sure of it she gonne win it. And who say that Maria gonne get good results on gravel ? She is not a gravel player. Last year 3th R in Rome and Berlin and a quarter-final at RG | |
