How exactly does a country "deserve" to have a tournament? I wasn't aware that the UN or someone handed them out out like lollies.

Tournaments basically exist where it is commercially viable for them to do so ... i.e. where there is enough tradition and infrastructure, interest from the public, entrepreneurial expertise in the sport, etc. Tennis is big business in the countries where that is the case. The same applies to any other sport, whether it be soccer, volleyball, cricket, gridiron football ... you name it. All these sports have major activity in some countries and not others.

I expect that Russian tennis will go ahead enormously because of the current success of the Russian stars (Marat, Masha, Nastya, etc), but it will take time for this to translate into enough public interest, entrepreneurial expertise, etc.

If yu take the number of tournies per continenet its more even, which i think is a fairer way of looking at considering the population and Wealth of the US compared to 1 single other country.

N. America -14
Europe- 26 (including russia and turkey)
Australasia -15 (including China)
Middle east -2 (3 if yu include turkey)
Africa -1
S.America- 2 (including mexico)

Spain and Russia need some/more! U.S.A. could spare one or two; Italy also does not need three!

I don't think Italy deserves another tourney.

Rome and Palermo don't attract a large public and they lose a lot of money every yera, especially Rome which is a tierI...

Btw, we'll see this year with Modena.

The Middle East is not a continent, is it? It would equal out even more if you placed those tournies in the correct continent - AFRIKA.

sorry about Germany. I thought they had 1 tournament, so I put a one by their name, but then I saw Filderstadt, and put it on there, but forgot to change the # by Germany. Sorry.

Japan is the 2nd biggest ecomonic power and one tier I and one tier III is far from enough for such a big ecomony! We actually deserve one more tier I and a couple of tier IIs. I wouldn't mind having a GS here hehe.

but Japan doesn't bring in big players. did you see the draw at Tokyo this year (PPO)? It was horrible with the likes of Roberta Vinci in THE MAIN DRAW!

It's not fair to say that the US has too many tournments, it is a bigger country then most to the european countries. if you drive from country to country in Europe if live driving state to state in the US.

How long would it take to go from the French Open to Wimbledon? Or from Rome to Berlin?

I just wish they would bring a tourny back to chicago. Take one away from frickin california

Girona ITF tournament organizers said that have paid the WTA a week for 2006 and if sponsors collaborte for next year there are a lot of possibilities to see a WTA event for next year in Spain.
Also Madrid has a lot of possibilities for coming years, we have a new president in the Spanish Tennis Federation, Pedro Muñoz, who was president of Madrid Tennis Federation and now he is supporting to get a WTA event to be played with Madrid ATP Master-Series.

There are some talks Belgrade (Serbia) could host a tier III next year.

Slovakia should get back Bratislava :)
Balkans should get one aswell :D

Canada should get another in Vancouver or Calgary, a Tier II perharps! They are so rich out there, I'm sure they could buy 5 Tier I's if they want

Spain should have three at least , if you take into consideration population, economy , number of good tennis players , facilities , interesting towns and locations and tourism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yah, I think there definitely should be a Calgary or Vancouver tournament. It is too bad that Tier V in Vancouver went down to a challenger after the Olympics year....

Glad to see Madrid is coming back. Astroferlondon is right, the number of players from all nationalities who hail from or have trained in Spain (all players who represent spain but also safina and safin trained there as well as some others who went to the Emilio Sanchez Academy) deserves more than one tournament.

:retard:

The Middle East has NEVER been grouped with Africa.

Not politically, geographically or historically.
