View Full Version : Mauresmo wary of Kirilenko

...The last two matches on Day 3 almost resulted in two upsets. In the end, there was only one. No.5 seed Patty Schnyder was upstaged by Kirilenko, 60 16 62, who advanced to the biggest quarterfinal of her career.

To reach the semifinals, Kirilenko must overcome No.1 seed Mauresmo, who could replace Lindsay Davenport as world No.1 with a strong showing this week.

A strong showing wasn't likely earlier on Wednesday, as Mauresmo dropped the first set to Serbian wildcard Ana Ivanovic, one of the biggest young prospects on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

The 17-year-old, however, couldn't maintain her advantage, eventually going down to last week's Antwerp champion, 26 62 64.

"It took me a while to get adjusted today; getting used to the conditions," said Mauresmo. "It's so different from playing indoors and in Europe. But once I got my rhythm I felt good. She's a very good player and still so young. I think she will continue to do well."

For the second time in as many days, Mauresmo will take on a teenaged star in the making.

"She's a very good player and she's one that wants it so bad," said Mauresmo of Kirilenko. "She's hungry for it. It's a good win over Schnyder so I know I have to be ready."
