As Sveta decides not to defend her points in Doha 05,

she falls to no.7 which makes LenaD one spot upper! :woohoo:

LenaD now has 120 points more than Sveta :)

 I love how lena can move up a spot by doing absolutely nothing!!!!

I really think the rankings should start at 0 at the start of the year, it would make more sense!

Of course, all that rating stuff is completely bogus.

The Maxometer, which is more than 1,000 times as accurate as the WTA computer, has Elena entering her 216th straight week at #1.

Well... If Elena can move up rankings when she isn't even playing, I can't wait to see what happens when she's back on court :p

Hopefully she picks up lots of points at IW, as she will need to defend a fair bit in Miami

Captain here!!

Well i am not totally sure ,but from information I am getting up here on the bridge , with Nastyas loss yesterday and some 280 points headed south, Lena could be moving up to number 5?? she is 190 points or so behind Nastya so it seems to me to be that way ,but I may be wrong ,I leave it up to another crew member to confirm this...

how does the rating system work anyway???
so confused....why would myskina or sveta lost points??

Safdem , When players gain points at a tourny those points are removed when that tourny comes round the folllowing year ,therefore the player has to "defend" those points ,that is try win them again ,i will give an example...

Myskina goes into Doha in 2004 with 2000 points ,she wins the event and gets 280 points ,so she now has 2280 points.

The following year 2005 Myskina loses in round one and gets no points and the ones from last year have been removed so ,she loses 280 points ,back to 2000 ,had she won the event again she would have remained the same 2280 or maybe a little higher or lower depending on the quality points for beating top players.

The amount of points i have used in the above example are just a rounded out amount, for example purposes and not the actual amount of points Myskina has..

So I hope this clarifies the situation for you ,Players have to defend their points that they win in the following year ,in the early part of 2004 Lena did not do so well so had very few points to defend ,as she did not play I.W last year she can only gain points and not lose any ,there are no points to come off.

Lena has points to defend in Miami however ,around 300 or so so those points will come off then, and Lena will need to make the final again to keep the same amount of points or win it to get even more.

With Lena playing I.W however and a chance for her to GAIN some points there ,hopefully the pressure will be a little less in Miami..

Nastya is currently 5th with 3785 points. Lena has 3665.

Dementinator
Feb 25th, 2005, 10:49 AM
I am a little confused too...

Myskina currently has according to WTA Tour 3856 points .
She was Def Champ in Doha and got around 280 points I believe 195 for winning and whatever quality points for beating Cappy and Kuz so around 280 I have heard.

So 3576 or so should be her total next week, which would then put her 89 points behind Lena ,as lena not defending any to lose , it does get complicated i must admit and maybe I have got something wrong but that seems to be right to me.

Please correct me if I am wrong ,

I have just read the "Women look forward" thread in GM :D

and i find this fanstastic thing :D:D

"The situation is most complicated at #5-#7, though. Elena Dementieva comes in at #6, but she's #5 in safe points, with Myskina #6 and Kuznetsova #7. Myskina needs a final to stay ahead of Dementieva; Kuznetsova's only hope of getting to #5, it appears, is to win and beat Davenport in the final. Even if Myskina loses first round, Kuznetsova needs a final to pass her. Still, the three could end up in any order"

Goood Luck Lena!

Just for the record, Lena enters this week at #1 on the Maxometer, the 217th straight week. (Sounds like she's doing pretty well on somebody else's Maxometer, too, wink wink, nudge, nudge, knowwhatImean?)

The ATP ranking is MUCH MUCH more easy than WTA

Well, that's the good thing of Lena are bad in begining of 2004 season
...now, she won 2 positions without PLAY

But, hey: if Myskina win DUBAI she will stay as #5
So, it's 'MURPHY LAW': "If something has a chance to happen, this can HAPPEN (and in the mots of the time... WILL HAPPEN)"

Oh, I don't think the system is that hard to understand. Once you catch on, it's a piece of cake. And I think that it's the only way you could do rankings

Soooooooo ,From Info i have here on the Bridge ,it seems Lena will move to number 5 now with the loss of the Gunboat Myskina today ,and as Nastya has points to defend in IW and is NOT playing ,the gap may get wider ,especially if Lena has a good Run!

i can't see LenaD will move up to no.4 soon cuz gap is too large.

Even she win IW (we know she will  ), she still can't move up :(:(:(

and remember the Miami thing :scared: she has 300+ pts to defend :awww:

well, think that exist worse things

Like, Serena that now 'say' that is injuried will lost LOADS of points
that's the good thing in not win finals, once that you reach there again, the final, you just have points to win ;)

Had Dementievanot been injured she would have been safe at no5 or may be pushing for no4 as she did not have many pts to defend. But now she will have many. I hope someone else in the top 4 is not able to play for a while that would help Lena  .
