Damir Dokic was investigated for physically abusing his daughter Jelena in 1998.

After Dokic lost to Slovakian Stanislava Hrozenska in the Australian Hardcourt Championships, witnesses reported seeing a 14 year old Jelena being hit by her father.

The police were called in and and found Dokic with bruise marks all over her body, however father and daughter insisted it occured at a training session.

Damir Dokic was brought ebfore a magistrate on the incident.

Where did you get this info? was it a reliable source? It would be breaking news if it were true, wouldn't it?

It's old news. It was in a few papers, Sports Illustrated etc and in the papers here a while back.

I'm currently doing some research however police are only willing to give a limited amount of info but I know a fried there who's trying to find some records etc.

It's not the first time this ahs been suggested.

I'm not being funny or anything, but if this incident happened in 1998 (and there's nothing new on the story?), why bring it up now.

There have always been suspicions, and I for one am not surprised to find that he has physically abused Jelena at some point in the past, but I don't really see the rationale behind this post unless there's 'new news'?

It occured in 1998, but the news of the investigation wasn't made public till now.

No one knew an investigation occured, there are more incidents com9ing to light now. Even 1 including Jelena's mysterious absence from the 1998 Orange Bowl with a mystery "injury".

I hope it's not true!

Somebody has visited jelena-dokic.com and read that the webmaster has got the Venus Envy book for Christmas, that is why this being brought up now, really old news, nothing new, just something that somebody never knew.

Actually Fingon, you are quite wrong. It has just the simple explanation there.

There is an article by Andrea Leand that names this and I did my own research as I have a friend in the police department.

A lot of people in the past have suggested physical abuse on behlaf of Damir but have been shot down, this is proof that there have been suspicious circumstances. If it's old new, I take it you won't be responding again, as I'm sure you have better things to do (or not)

Where is the article by Andrea Leand?

Here is the piece from Jelena-Dokic.com (which is the best dokic site on the net)

Dec 26th - Merry Christmas!
-I hope all of you are having wonderful holidays. I personally received the book "Venus Envy", a book dedicated to the WTA tour and although I have only read one part of the book so far, I learned many things including a few about Jelena. Did you know that in 1998 there was in investigation about Damir physically abusing Jelena. Apparently, during an ITF tournament in Australia, the police received complaints and although they did find a very bruised Jelena, both Damir and her said it had happened during practice. Anyway, I don't really like reporting such news but I feel you should know the good and not so good news about Jelena...anyway, you might want to buy this book.. it's got very interesting stuff so far..

Venus Envy book was out this year, when was the Andrea Leand article out? Or was she using the Venus Envy book as her basis for it

Suddenly, there are all these incidents which people are reporting to have witnessed. Believe Steven when he tells you it's a lot worse that what was reported.

I don't know whether or not Damir is guilty, but it seems so if people have seen him hit Jelena in public. Seems strange that he would do this kind of thing in public. One would think that if he were going to actually abuse her that he'd be more discreet. I'm not condoning it, but domestic abusers usually don't show that side of themselves in public.

I also have one theory which may or may not be the case. But could one of a number of reasons for the Dokic's leaving Australia be that domestic abuse is less tolerated here than it is back in Yugoslavia? I mean, in Australia, any act of violence in the home can quickly become everyone's business, but in some European cultures such as the Yugoslavian one possibly, the family's business is usually seen as the family's business and best to be left alone by outsiders. Do you know what I mean?

I'm not saying that in Yugoslavia they condone domestic abuse, but that they have the attitude that "another's business is not my business." Whereas in Australia, people are more likely to get involved whether it be a neighbour or a stranger on the street. The investigation into Damir's alleged beatings of Jelena is such a case. Someone reported him. If it had happened in Yugoslavia at the time, passers-by might've let it go, citing it as the Dokic's business and only theirs. But in Australia, if you see someone being hurt you would naturally report it.

I hope someone understands what I mean. It's only a theory on the Dokic's. I don't want to insinuate anything. I'm not sure if the Yugoslavian culture is really like that. It's only the impression I get from some people I know who are Yugoslavian. Their parents are very conservative, and their kids didn't seem to be able to do anything when they were younger. I know that some cultures are like that. Mine is like that. What's said and done in the home stays in the home and is never shown to people outside of the home.

I read that he got crazy because of the war 10 years ago. He should seek for help
and the I don`t interfere with the neighbours is a human behaviour wich happens everywhere not only in certain cultures. I wonder how many people would realy call the police when they knew that the neighbours, family or whoever hit there children, the wife, husband etc.. I think not many.

This is quite disturbing. I'm suprised, like Braveheart, to hear that this has happened in public. I always had the feeling that some kind of physical force was being exerted on Jelena to make her act the way that her father wanted her to.

I suspect that in a few years time, Jelena will break with her father and we'll hear the full story. Rather as happened with mary Pierce & Mirjana Lucic. I wish to God, someone on tour would introduce Jelena to Mary & Mirjana, both of whom could help her.

In Australia, we are encouraged to report abuse.

I doubt Damir would be abusing her now, the tables are turned, now she makes the $$$ and Damir is reliat on her.

Plus, Jelena is a black belt in tae kwon do!

oh , i didn't know she had a black belt? whoa ! she must be a force on and off that court so watch out damir..lol

nah seriously , Damir WAS an amateur boxer and im sure he can more than match Jelena in the ring ...unless savo helps her out

[quote]I doubt Damir would be abusing her now, the tables are turned, now she makes the $$$ and Damir is reliat on her.

... i agree the fact theyre well off means its less likely that the abuse is still occuring , but even the richest ppl and from the highest socio-economic groups still experience domestic violence , however it is usually more hidden...
