You can have your own thread in Arabic but since this is a public message board I ask you to write your posts in English so that everybody can understand them.
Consider this a warning, one more thread like this and I'll take actions.

I can read an write arabic, rather fluentlu, but I am not able to read this, I don't know if it's just my computer, but it's just letters that I see a lot of letters but no words.
But Josh what's the point? why can't someone can't post in arabic? we still can post in french swidish german, etc. so what's the problem with arabic can you explain, or is it just a kind of xenophobia?
Dec 27th, 2001, 07:06 PM
Ok, I am able to read some, and from what I am able to read it has nothing to do with Venus or Serena, it's a bout an incident in Indonisia, like a car accident, and a police report!

Sofiane, I didn't mean that you can't write a thread in Arabic on this board but this poster has posted already 5 topics in Arabic. In one of them he talks to another member, Evey but since she doesn't speak Arabic I believe that all this is some kind of joke.
If this person wants an Arabic forum he can make one and post in there but I won't allow him/her to start threads in Arabic all over the board since only a small minority of our members understand that language, just as I wouldn't allow someone starting threads in Hindi, Portugese, Swahili or whatever language all over the board.
Dec 27th, 2001, 07:11 PM
BTW why don't you start a thread in Arabic? I'm sure some of the members would be interested in learning some words. I know I would.

As I noticed elsewhere, and even though I can't read Arabic myself, this can't be Arabic. First, it's written from left to right, and second, Arabic has different forms for initial, intermediary, final and isolated letters, and those "texts" just mix them all together. Either they simply don't make any sense, or they're typed in a Western font then converted into an Arabic one. Hopefully they're not coded terrorist messages (well, this would be a weird place for such games).

This looks more like Farsi (Persian) than Arabic
Dec 27th, 2001, 07:28 PM
Really, Eggy? I can't see any specifically Farsi letter in it... Anyway, I doubt it is either

gmt, actually it's arabic, it's just that it's written in weird way, since in arabic we don't have a script writting, like the one used to post here for exemple, all the letters he used are arabic letters, and you can read some words by reading the normal way from right to left.
The onely problem is there no links between the letters which is a feature of arabic writing, the way the letters are linked may change the meaning of the word.
I can translate somhow the first line :
Petropolis ??? known for spending the week-end ???? with a car in Rio De Janero city.
It's diffcult to read because of the way it's written, but it's defenitelly arabic.
Dec 27th, 2001, 10:25 PM
Ah, thanks Sofiane. Now that's positively weird. So this is a poster who actually writes in Arabic, only, not using the right form for the letters (which misled me), and assembling texts that don't seem to make sense... Hmmm, rather suspicious. How about simply deleting the topics? I mean, if he simply wanted to create an Arabic thread, he would have done that, just as Dutch, German, Filipino, French threads have been put up in Non-tennis. It would not occur to me to post five topics in French with wrong spelling and no intelligible meaning.

I have been able to read this in whole given my vast knowledge of world languages. What it says is that Venus and Serena have grown bored with tennis. Venus is going to quit tennis and become a waitress at IHOP because she loves pancakes and likes to do nice things for people. The glamor and adoration have gotten to her, and she wants the low-key life. Serena has taken a job as the gym teacher for a middle school near Palm Beach Gardens. There's some unclear stuff I can't understand, and then it says that Richard is mad at his daughters and will now coach Monique Viele to be the next great one, and coach Martina Hingis also because Richard lost some sort of bet with Melanie Molitor last year, but I can't understand from the language what the bet was about.
Well, I don't believe any of it!

Sorry, but it's a little bit stupid to post an article in arabic....
Dec 28th, 2001, 02:19 AM
Hmm, weird article. And I certainly don't believe what it says.
Dec 28th, 2001, 04:15 AM
What celest wrote is just a joke, cause it has nothing to do with waht's written above! .
I tried to spot a tennis player name, and from what I was able to read there is no name of any tennis player in the arabic text above, I guess the poster above is not even able to read arabic, but he just posted a topic by copying and pasting the text from somwhere!
Dec 28th, 2001, 04:19 AM
Actually I can translate the last sentence quit well:
The police officer said that the investigating team noticed the use of brakes on the metallic barrier.
Now this sentence really doesn't make any sence! especially the question mark!
Exactly what I was beginning to believe, Sofiane!

I enjoyed Celeste's translation way better than the proper version. I dunno about IHOP though, can you imagine her turning up to work? Well when she felt like it she would, otherwise thay'd better have someone like Martina Hingis to cover.

one word: Dick
I mean post in Arabic. Fine, nothing wrong with that at all.
But when you post something in a topic which has nothing to do with the title, and furthermore nothing to do with tennis (this being for tennis related threads only, I call that acting like an attention-seeking dick. Absolutely.
