View Full Version : Lindsay in Dubai.

Andrew.
Feb 15th, 2005, 12:27 AM
Dubai starts two weeks from today, which means preparations should be in order as we speak.

I only want one thing in Dubai: the Title. No more final losses. Title. I don't care if it's by beating every opponent by walkover or retirement. A title is a title. Time to win one again.

Lindsay has been undefeated in Tier II's since October of 2003. That is a record. A record that has to be kept up.

Show up. Lie, cheat steal. Anything for the title.

That is all.

Serena's playing so if Lindsay's not playing doubles and is it top form again physically she can win here... the court should suit her.

Lindsay and Serena won't meet until the final and the rest of the draw is very beatable... we saw how she copes with Svetlana in Tokyo and I want to see her beat Myskina's ass after the last two losses.

I think Lindsay can win this tournament. Lindsay is nearly unbeatable on hard court, so I think even Serena can't beat Lindsay. Lindsay lost their last meeting because she was very tired, but things are different right now. But Lindsay should not to apply for the doubles. GO LINDSAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lindsay will likely lose her #1 ranking after Doha. WTA rockz.

But she can get it back in Dubai with a SF.

Ty-Ty
Feb 20th, 2005, 12:15 AM
Psst.... Who will she lost it too? Mauresmo or Sharapova? I'm guessing Momo?

Andrew.
Feb 20th, 2005, 01:05 AM
Mauresmo. If Mauresmo wins Antwerp tomorrow and makes the Doha semi, it's likely she'll regain the ranking.

Ty-Ty
Feb 20th, 2005, 01:37 AM
Crackers ... Oh well. I don't care if she holds number one at the French, but at Wimbledon it's different. If it doesn't make a difference to Lindsay (Which I'm almost positive it doesn't), then I don't care, but it's a nice little insurance being number one.

Andrew.
Feb 20th, 2005, 01:41 AM
Lindsay can't meet Serena until the final in Dubai. That's a positive.

Ty-Ty
Feb 20th, 2005, 01:48 AM
Yes, assuming that that happened and Sharapova stays at four (She's entered in Doha so....) Then we would have Sharapova ..... That sucks.

Andrew.

Yes, assuming that that happened and Sharapova stays at four (She's entered in Doha so....) Then we would have Sharapova ..... That sucks.
Seedings won't take Doha results into account, and Sharapova isn't playing Dubai.

The top four seeds will be Lindsay, Serena, Myskina, Kuznetsova. Venus will be the #5 seed, Alicia #6. It's a tough field, but Lindsay should be able to do well.

Ty-Ty
Feb 20th, 2005, 01:58 AM
Oh. Learn something new everyday.

Well that makes things more confusing for me. So it would be ...

Lindsay
Mauresmo
Serena
Maria

You said that Maruesmo would take the number one after the semi's in Doha .... Doesn't that mean we will Serena before the fianl?

Ty-Ty
Feb 20th, 2005, 01:59 AM

Andrew.

Maria's not playing Dubai. She's not on the commitment list. The only way would be if she got a GE WC.

By the way, thought I would share what Jelena Jankovic said in an interview,

"Lindsay Davenport was the best player of 2004. I've already voted for her in Internet poll. She is not like any other player, she is a great person, she is really fair, and very relaxed and nice to everybody."

Jelena :)

Frederic

That's nothing but the truth!!!! ;-) Lindsay is a great person, and that's the reason why we like her. About Dubai, I think it is worrying because she won't rest enough to play in Indian Wells... Anyway, I want her to win the title in Dubai!!! GO LINDSAY!!!!

Elldee

That's a really nice thing to hear. I was watching Lindsay's match against Alicia from the AO yesterday and people have been saying she's so rude, but she was polite after the match to the ballboys, saying her pleases and thank yous!

Andrew, it's very likely Lindsay will be seeded in the top four for Wimbledon?

Andrew.

Amelie will have massive clay points coming off during the clay season, which takes her out of #1 almost immediatly. Serena's Miami points come off, and she also has some points to defend. Sharapova's road to #1 won't be very easy either. She has around 80 points to defend at every tournament she plays until Roland Garros. That adds up. Lindsay really has a shot at the #1 seeding at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. And even if she doesn't get #1 there, a top 4 seeding is almost a guarentee. With decent play, she should be #1 again after Wimbledon. She only has one big thing to defend until the summer, and that's Amelia Island. And she can gain in Charleston. I really hope she plays at least two warmups for the French this year.

lindsayno1
Feb 20th, 2005, 03:51 PM
i really hope she does eastbourne!

Andrew.
Feb 20th, 2005, 06:04 PM
Mauresmo likely will be #1 next week. All she needs is a SF in Doha, and her draw is a cakewalk.

!<blocparty>!
Feb 20th, 2005, 07:36 PM
Momo will probably re-gain the ranking next week then, shes played very well this week, especially against Venus.

Lindsay had better murder this field. Get her into title mode.

lindsayno1
Feb 21st, 2005, 10:44 AM
noooo not momo no1!!!

!<blocparty>!
Feb 21st, 2005, 12:16 PM
I don't really mind having Amelie as number one for a bit. Chances are she'll lose it during the clay season anyway. Lindsay's apparently not too bothered about the spot in the first place and she'll probably get it back before wimbledon as she doesnt have too many points to defend at the French. She needs good showings (title showings) In Indian Wells and Dubai, and hope she's in hot form come Amelia Island where she will need to be playing at her best to win over that field, on green clay.

Andrew.

Cancel that. I forgot she has her 17th tournament coming off now.

So, Mauresmo must now make the final to become #1, and get a certain amout of quality points.

Chances are now very good that Lindsay will get that back instantly by showing up at Dubai.

Andrew.

I don't think AI will be very strong this year. So far the only top 10 players to commit are Lindsay, Venus, and Serena, so you know one of the Sisters is pulling out.

!<blocparty>!
Feb 21st, 2005, 01:41 PM
Well last years field was really good, so I would have thought it would be the same this year. hmm, so no russians (top 10 russians) entered so far?

Nope.

RayRob
Feb 21st, 2005, 03:49 PM
Well, that's interesting about AI.....not that it has anything to do with this thread lol, but it could possibly be an 'easy' passage to a title which can give a little bit of match practice on clay.....albeit, RG clay is much softer anyway.....but in Lindsay's case, clay is clay and any title on clay is good practice for Lindsay.

I agree with Andrew, Either Venus or Serena is highly likely to pull out. My bets are on Serena pulling out, as I know that right now Venus will be gutted not to have taken her chances in Antwerp. With AI being an open field, i would put my bets on the Williams family considering AI to be one of Venus's better chances for a title this year.

Plus, if this happens, I fancy Lindsay's chances against Venus, if it's a Lindsay/VEnus final.......but hey, that's about five weeks away - I digress - back to Dubia!

Any info on TV schedule yet? I don't think Eurosport will have it online until this week sometime.

yeah a win will set her up nicely (confidence wise) for IW...i still think its gonna be difficult for her as at the moment we dont know which lindsay is gonna turn up. im hoping that her hip flexor problem has cleared up and we will have a fully fit lindsay for teh first time this year.

Lindsay definately had a hurt hip in the final of Tokyo, probably because she was unstrapped against Kuznetsova, and had so much strapping in the last two rounds of the Aussie. She should be rested and fresh and looking forward to playing on faster courts!

Magdalena Maleeva vs. Patty Schnyder (8)

I like her draw alot. Dechy has done nothing since Australia. Myskina has been in crap form all year. Patty is probably the toughest player in that section.

Lindsay Davenport (1) vs. BYE
Anabel Medina Garrigues vs. Qualifier (Q)

Anastasia Myskina (3) vs. BYE

Patty is also tired and streaky, so I think Maleeva has a decent chance of knocking her out.

She has a really good draw, she should feel happy that she isn't a member of the chaos that is the bottom half of the draw :tape:

Lindsay is really thin now. She looks like she's enjoying things more.

I think Lindsay has at least five years of top 5 tennis left in her. The question is if she wants it. At 28.

Elldee
Feb 28th, 2005, 06:16 PM
She's 28 and wants children. But she does keep harping on about wanting to keep going while playing good tennis and not always think 'what if?'.... I still think this is her last year and intend to enjoy it all!

Andrew.
Feb 28th, 2005, 06:25 PM
If she wants children, adopt. Many need parents. Having kids = fat. And if she adopts, she can keep playing tennis and show the kid the world. I like that plan.

LMAO, it sounds like you're equating thinness to happiness and enjoyment.

I think Lindsay's quite an old fashioned kind of girl and wants her own kids and obviously travelling round the world is unstable... I don't know why I'm replying as clearly you were joking. A few more slam finals or wins and Lindsay may well stay on for another year, I'd love her to win multiple slams this year.

it was really windy, therefore her normal style of play (ie hitting right by the lines) wasnt working as effectively as normal, and the same with her serve. So she played it a bit safer, not hitting QUITE as wide, but Zheng hit this almighty backhand down the line and lindsay smacked the ball into the crowd in annoyance. She then got a warning for ball abuse. She then immediately proceeded to double fault and hten smacked her racket on the floor! Lindsay didnt play crap thou, not by any stretch. The wind was just preventing her from playing WELL and doing what she wanted.

*copied post from GM*

Lindsay had a stomach problem and was crying on court during a injury time out at 3-4 in the second set.

First set - Lindsay playing like shit really, she cried out "Get the fucking ball in" But Patty's gameplan was great, she was solid from the back and hit lots to the Forehand.
In the second Lindsay took a 3-1 lead but Patty took 3 games ina row to lead 4-3 with Lindsay slumping and really feeling it by this point. She took some medication and game back to grind out the set 7-5 and played great in the third to win 6-1. Patty went away from the match mentally theres no doubt, as she probably thought the match should have been hers already.

But all credit to Lindsay for sticking in and fighting like that

Mar 4th, 2005, 12:05 PM
it was horrible to watch when she was crying :(

lindsayno1
Mar 4th, 2005, 12:08 PM
mine copied from GM

Lindsays got somethig wrong with her tummy, not an injury though. Something she could have eaten maybe. She played pretty poorly in the first set and really got underway towards the end of the second set. When she called the trainer she looked white and like she was going to be sick. She had some fluid thing and after that played like a world no1, but still looking ill. Every change of ends on the breaks she looked ill as she sat down and when she won there was no emotion at all. When she picked up her bag she was wincing.

It was painful to watch because obv she is ill and was crying when the trainer was there. I really thought she was gonna be sick. But people who dont think shes a worthy no1...watch that match. Shes clearly ill and even waited for the next change over (2 games) to have the trainer so not to disrupt Patty. She looked awful for the rest of the match, but whacked winner after winner.

Lindsay i salute you!!!

Davenport survives to reach Dubai final

DUBAI (AFP) - World number one Lindsay Davenport overcame a stomach bug which made her feel ill on court to reach the final of the one-million-dollar Dubai Open with a three-set win over Switzerland's Patty Schnyder.

The American's 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Schnyder, the eighth seed, kept alive the chances of a revenge match with Serena Williams, who narrowly beat Davenport in the Australian Open final at the end of January.

Williams will play the other semi-final against Jelena Jankovic, the unseeded Serbian, in the evening session.

But Davenport had to come from within three points of defeat at 4-5 down in the second set to survive, and there were moments in the second set when she was afraid of being sick and unable to continue.

"I was feeling really nauseous, and I didn't want to be sick when there were people around," said Davenport with a wry chuckle. "My stomach was rumbling and I could tell that it wasn't happy.

"I tried to keep the points a bit shorter and it was all a bit of a blur for a while and there were a few games I just don't remember. I think she was a little disheartened to lose the second set.

"But I pulled my shots in a little bit - I was so wild in the first set - and I just got my shots inside the line. I thought it was going to end with an embarrassing situation!"

Davenport was in difficulties from early on because Schnyder, who had won 17 out of 21 matches this year including one against French Open champion Anastasia Myskina the day before, broke serve for 3-1.

Schnyder went on to hold a set point at 5-2, mixing spins and pressurising Davenport's backhand with her left-handed cross-court forehand, and broke the tall American's big serve again to clinch the first set after Davenport had unexpectedly broken back.

When Davenport weakened in the second set, serving two double faults to lose the advantage of a break of serve, and allowing Schnyder to advance to 4-3 and 5-4 it seemed that the favourite might go out.

But Davenport pounded away more steadily with her ground strokes as a crisis loomed, and the two driving errors she squeezed from Schnyder at 5-5 - an overpressing forehand which sailed over the baseline and a backhand which slid agonisingly into the tramlines - turned the match.

Davenport served out for the set, took a bathroom break and some medicine, and looked much stronger and more secure in the decider. She broke serve at once and ran away with it in only 25 minutes.

"That was a let-down," admitted Schnyder. "I was really frustrated because I felt my game slipping away and she was playing better and better and that's not a nice feeling.

"I had a chance to win in the second set and I sensed the moment, but my shots were not there."

Davenport added: "I will probably take some more medicine, lay down and rest, and eat some bland food. At least I have plenty of time to relax before the final which isn't until tomorrow (Saturday) night."

Exciting. First title of 05 and a great confidence boost, especially winning two three setters in a row.

Thank God Lindsay's not tanking in third sets now... I'm proud! Damn eurosport for not showing the presentation ceremony.

Also, I hate the yellow outfit.

I know!!!! I was so annoyed! Annabel croft was talking, discribing what was going on like they were going to show it, then Euro2 cut to boxing! what's that about!?

Lindsay delivered excellently. Not the best ive seen her play, but she really stepped it up when it mattered. Ive never seen her look so focused! youd have thought shed have been like that in the aussie open final!!!

The two break points she fought off in the third set were the best points of the match.... amazing.

I know Dechy has points to defend but I don't see her getting to the quarters. I think Lindsay will face Bartoli. Lindsay could easily beat Mauresmo or Kuznetsova but instead she has to face Maria. It's a shame but I think this could be a great tournement.

I am happy with this win too.

Great draw in Indian Wells except for Sharapova but her time must now be arround to beat Maria so why not here. :worship:
