View Full Version : Els Callens quits at the end of the year

Feb 10th, 2005, 04:03 PM
I hope I translated it quite correctly :)

Els Callens will quit playing toptennis after this season. For 15 years Callens was a top player and she is the oldest player on tour (Navratilova not included).

Callens is now the number 151 and it's getting more difficult every day between all the young talent.

"It's getting harder and harder, physically. Then it's time to take a decision and have to say that it's over." Callens doubted for a long period.

Els Callens (34) zet na dit seizoen een
punt achter haar profcarrière. Callens
is al vijftien jaar profspeelster en is
momenteel (Martina Navratilova niet
meegerekend) de oudste speelster die
meedraait in het profcircuit.

Callens is teruggezakt naar de 151e
plaats op de wereldranglijst en heeft
het steeds moeilijker om zich te
handhaven tussen het jonge geweld.

"Het wordt moeilijker en moeilijker,
vooral fysiek. Dan vind ik dat je een
beslissing moet kunnen nemen, en moet
kunnen zeggen "ja, het is afgelopen."
Callens twijfelde al langer.

:wavey: See you in Antwerp!

Belgium = Best

Not surprusing but still sad news:sad:

The Belgian Fed Cup team will definately miss her, hopefully Kirsten can recover from her injury and take up the role she played in the team:)

Well Els will still play Fed Cup this year;)

I don't think Kirsten will with her injury and I don't think kim will either, although if they win or have to play a quallies (if they lose) then I think Kim will play cause by then she should hopefully be back to match fitness:)

Dulko d. Callens 6-1 6-3....Fed Cup
Well, at least she won the doubles with Clijsters....
If I'm not mistaken, she is likely to retired in Hasselt, let's hope she can get a WC then, and maybe win the tournament outright or something:). Good luck.
