When she came across tabloid "Drug Scandal" headlines about Kuznetsova, Molik purchased an entire stack of newspapers from the local convenience store and promptly threw them in the trash.

Molik 'rubbishes' doping furore :yeah:

Alicia Molik has rubbished, quite literally, the drug controversy embroiling women's tennis at the Australian Open.

Molik says she was so disgusted by media reports of the doping controversy surrounding three players that she bought every copy of every newspaper in her local convenience store and promptly dumped them in the bin.

Australian newspapers have given widespread coverage to accusations that US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova tested positive for the stimulant ephedrine at a tournament in Belgium last month.

Two other players, sixth seed Elena Dementieva and Frenchwoman Nathalie
Dechy have also been caught up in the controversy, which provoked a ferocious response from WTA Tour officials today.

Kuznetsova has proclaimed her innocence.

Molik, Kuznetsova's doubles partner, said she had made her gesture out of solidarity with her three fellow professionals.

"I don't think it's very fair on any single one of those three girls that are featured on the cover of the papers," she said.

"In fact, I was down at my local convenience store this morning and I saw the papers and I read the front page.

"And I bought every single newspaper in the convenience store and threw them away. That's how strongly I felt about the issue."

Molik, who advanced to the second round after overwhelming Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1, 6-3, said Kuznetsova was innocent, pointing out that ephedrine was not a banned substance taken out of competition.

"Svetlana took a substance which is not banned, and out of competition. So there's absolutely nothing wrong with anything that she's done," Molik said.
