According to Swiss Teletext, the Romanian gymnast and 3 times Olympic champion Catalina Ponor announced her retirement from the sport.

Her announcement is the reaction on the retirement of national coach Adrian Belu. The 53 old Belu was criticized and sued by a former gymnast, who accused him of using "inhuman methods" and keeping the price money for himself.

With the retirement of Catalina Ponor Romania lose their best gymnast.

On Monday, triple Olympic gold medallist Catalina Ponor was considered ending her career in protest against what she called "unfair pressure" by the media and the courts on her coaches.

"I'm disappointed and confused," Ponor, 17, told Reuters. "I have not trained for days. What happened to my coach is not fair. I'm seriously thinking of leaving gymnastics."

Monica Rosu, another member of Romania's Olympic team, announced that she would also end her career if Belu and Bitang did not reverse their decision to quit.

However, Belu appeared adamant.

She was a joy to watch at the Olympics :worship: a worthy champion

Maybe she is just moody and will correct her retirement news. Be a nice girl Catalina and don't let us down.

Its really amazing, I really thought that should could be potentially be a threat to be an all around champion. I just never understood how she could be so good on beam, floor and vault and be so weak on bars. In fact, that was the reason why she did not compete in the all around in Athens. Her bar routines was so bad she would only score an 8.6 or 8.7. It simply is mind boggling. I can't believe that Ocatavian Belu has retired. He has given us so many greats like Lavinia Milosevic, Simona Amanar, Daniela Silivas, Aurelia Dobre and the list goes on. Good luck to Catalina!

Didnt Belu coach Comaneci also?

Didnt Belu coach Comaneci also?Nope, I don't think so. Karolyi defected in 1981 after Comaneci retired or was near her end in gymnastics. Karolyi in fact was coaching Ecaterina Szabo, Lavinia Agache at the time. Szabo lost to Retton in 1984. I am not sure when exactly Belu took over however. Comaneci for the most part of her life was coached by Bela Karolyi.

I was always shocked as to why Catalina Ponor didn't compete in the All-Arounds? Was her bars scores that bad?

I was always shocked as to why Catalina Ponor didn't compete in the All-Arounds? Was her bars scores that bad?Yes, bc I was surprised as to why she did not compete in the allaround. To qualify one must be one of the five members of her team to compete on all events on day one of preliminary competition. For example, on day one Mohini B, Courtney Kupets, Courtney McCool, and Carly Patterson were the only ones from USA on day one to compete on all four events thus they were the only one to be eligible. Only two advance and that was Kupets and of course, Patterson. From Romania it was Daniela Sofronie and Oana Ban. And yes, Ponor was terrible on bars. I guess it was maybe simiar to Vanessa Atler.

Best of luck in any future endeavors Catalina!

Yeah, I heard this too..really sad  Why does she retire just because Belu quits? I was really hoping she can do well in the AA at the WCs this year if she got a okay bars routine. Now Romania will for sure not win the AA, cuz gymnasts like Sofronie, Rosu are good, but they would have difficulty to beat Patterson ar even Pavs at All Around IMO. Probably there best AA chance would now be Andreea Munteanu if she recovered her injury yet
Btw, the reason why Ponor and many of the Romanian gymnasts are weak on uneven bars is cos Belu didn't like the requirements on this apparatus for the last Olympic cycle.

Belu also coached Gina Goegan and Andrea Raducan. They seem to produce such great gymnasts. It would be a shame to lose Ponor. She did so well in Athens. She took the beam final from Carly. Had she nailed her Arabian dismount, she wouldnt have won. But Ponor would have lead the new team to the 2005 World Championships. Is Patterson going to compete internationally again? I hope she doesnt do what Tara Lipinski did and turn pro.

Tara Lipinksi had sever back problems...Many people don't know this...She turned professional because she couldn't do the jumps anymore...It was too much on her body...
