Szavay back on WTA fast track
River Oaks win means Hungarian teenager will move closer to top 200

By DALE ROBERTSON
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Agnes Szavay owned up to her nerves. Although she won the 2005 French Open junior championship, she never had played for a pro title at this level.

The Hungarian teenager started the final against fourth-seeded Bethanie Mattek on Sunday with back-to-back double faults and she dropped the first set without offering much of a protest.

But then, before it was too late, she relaxed and let her talents take hold.

Not too long thereafter, Szavay was the champion of the second $50,000 River Oaks USTA Challenger.

Her 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 defeat of the American Mattek, 21, in the championship match, nine weeks before her 18th birthday was worth $7,315.

More important, her victory told her she was back on the fast track to the World Tennis Association Tour after losing half a year of tennis growth as she battled mononucleosis.

With the win, Szavay moved up from 242nd to 209 in the rankings, which will likely assure her of a spot in the Australian Open qualifying draw in January.

A year from now, if her progress of late is any indication, she could be a top-50 player.

Few players at any level can unleash a more powerful, technically proficient backhand.

She says she is recovered from the illness, which hit her about this time last year.

"I was always tired, with no energy," Szavay said, "but we didn't know what was wrong. Now, I feel much better and my game is improving a lot. I'm very much looking forward (to next year)."

She was in Houston with her coach of less than half a year, Zoltan Kuharszky, who said her objective is to finish the year "in the top 200, which she is very close to now, and to get into the Grand Slam qualifying."

Szavay was under the weather the only previous time she had faced Mattek, taking just one game in a second-round match on clay in Bogota, Colombia, in late February.

But after advancing against Tzipi Obziler in Saturday's semifinal, she promised "this would be new day," and it was.

"After the first set," Szavay said, "I felt much better, of course, because I was leading and I could put pressure on her more.

''But I wasn't ever really relaxed."

It didn't show as she easily served out the final game of the second set.

Then she turned up the heat in the third, breaking Mattek four times in a row to secure her second professional title.

Szavay had won a $10,000 satellite tournament in 2004, when she was 15.

She reached the final of the $50,000 tournament in Ashland, Ky. two weeks ago before losing to Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 7-6 (2).

Sunday's breakthrough was registered almost solely on the strength of Szavay's fierce backhand, which set up an easy forehand put-away at match point.

Mattek, seeking her fourth ITF title and a shot at cracking the top 100 for the first time, was slowed by a sore left knee, which was encased in a brace, and a blister on the bottom of her left foot.

The latter became more of a factor as the match wore on, but she declined to make excuses.

"My knee was actually feeling OK today," Mattek said. "She just started making me run. She played solid tennis. She deserved to win."

The doubles final also went three sets. The third-seeded team of Julie Ditty and Tetiana Luzhanska held on to defeat Laura Granville and Carly Gullickson 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

To be honest, I am not too sad that she lost ; I want her in her best form in Wimbledon where she is likely to be the top seed of the qualies. Clay courts are not the best way to prepare it ;) . Of course, I wouldn't have been bothered, had she won the title.

Top Seed Szavay Qualifies

Top seeded Agnes Szavay, the 18-year-old Hungarian, qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time after coming through the tournament at Roehampton without losing a set.

"I have played in juniors at Wimbledon three times and it's great to get into the tournament," said Szavay after defeating Akgula Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-3 in the final round of qualifying.

"I am very pleased to qualify because I also qualified for the French Open and lost in the second round," she said. "My ranking has gone from 82nd to 70th and I’m looking forward to playing at Wimbledon."

Szavay was junior champion in singles and doubles at the French Open two years ago and won the Wimbledon doubles the same year. But she was ill last year and did not compete.

Today Szavay was in command for most of the match but stubborn resistance by Amanmuradova in the late stages prolonged the finish. At 5-2 down Amanmuradova saved four match points and held serve. But the Hungarian made certain when a fifth chance came her way and she forced a forehand error from her opponent.
