Andrew.

Nothing. She didn't play between Tokyo and Indian Wells in 2004.

wtf did she sign up for Qatar as well? I remember her choosing Dubai - it doesn't surprise me since they're near each other in terms of dates, etc and location *g* but I completely missed her committing to that one.

Lindsay could March away
Paul Malone
31jan05

THE Indian Wells tournament in March looms as a possible retirement date for Lindsay Davenport after she lost the women's singles final to Serena Williams on Saturday.

Williams' mother and coach Oracene Price said she had heard of rumoured retirement plans and felt Davenport's poor third-set performance in her 2-6 6-3 6-0 defeat had been because she knew retirement was imminent.

Davenport's friend Raquel Martin, a WTA Tour staffer, could not confirm rumours Davenport, 28, had identified the March tournament in her home state of California for her farewell before settling down with husband Jon Leach.

Price said: "She started to think too much maybe about this being her last lot of tournaments . . . that maybe it will be the end in March, I've heard. I don't know.

"I think she lost a bit of hope. Lindsay missed shots she would normally make, shots I've seen her make from the time she was in juniors. Sometimes when you lose it, it's hard to get it back."

Davenport is understood to have played her last Australian Open and, unless she makes sacrifices for a realistic chance at Wimbledon and the US Open, her last set in a major will be one in which she won eight points.

She did little to dampen speculation she would not play another Australian Open, telling the crowd at the presentations she hoped "to see you again".

Davenport, winner of the 2000 Australian Open, lost 10 points in a row after serving at 3-4, 40-0 in the second set, including two double-faults, and she blamed her demise on fatigue in her third consecutive three-set match.

"The fact you could win another grand slam goes through your mind the whole time and I knew I was playing well in the first set," Davenport said.

"But I don't think that was due to the fact I was close to winning. It wasn't like I was serving for the match and thought: 'This is it'.

"I felt like I was in control pretty much of the match until I had that horrible lapse. I made a few quick errors, and kind of opened the door for her. "The time-out (called by Williams after five games for back pain) helped in terms of getting her better. And as the match went on, her serve just got harder and better."

I actually had predicted last year that she would end it at Indian Wells when I heard she was coming to Australia that's what I called on again.

My prediction would be this:

If she wins IW she'll retire - if not then one of the other US tournaments, etc.

Then she'll finish the year (if the US team is successful) by guiding the team to victory in the Fed Cup

I truly believe that would be her biggest accomplishment, moreso than a GS win since it's been a few years since the US team has won the Fed Cup.

I think Fed Cup is highly overrated.

I believe Lindsay will play a full, uninterupted schedule in 2005.

K. That March rumor has been circulated by the Aus media for months now and has been nothing but pure speculation. In an interview given in December, Lindsay stated she had worked out a schedule through March, which was incorrectly twisted into meaning that she would retire in March.

She is not retiring in March. I would bet my house on it.

That's more like it ;)

It would be sad if she does retire after Indian but I don't think she will. Maybe the watery eyes shared between Lindsay and Jon were that of realisation that Lindsay's retirement is imminant and that a year isn't all that long. Especially when you know you are going to end a big part of your life!

I try not to think about it too much, but I won't kid myself into believing that she'll be back next year - deep down, I know she won't and this is surely her final year.....like we say it's the "Unofficial TOP Lindsay Farewell Tour". If she doesn't cry over it before Wimby, we who are going should attempt to get a blubber from her ;)

i will make her cry.....if jon wants kids sooo bad i will even offer to be a surragate mum so lindsay can carry on playing tennis and have kids.....actually thats a pretty good idea...if a few of us do it then she can have a full familly in the space of 9 months......do u think she will go for it.

To a lot of people Fed Cup might be overrated - but for who take honour representing their country it isn't - same goes for Davis Cup :)

lol Kelly *g*

Lindsay should do one of those Dial-A-Mother deals. She needs to understand that pregnancy = fat = anger = unpleasant experience. Let Jon have some fun solo, take Lindsay, combine in a test tube, implant into a willing female, and you have your kid. Simple plan. And she can play tennis. :)

LMAO yeah!!!! I cant imagine lindsay with a pregnant stomach!!!

We shall do something for wimbledon people, i got my tix today too!!! I was thinking maybe a memory book type thing?

Lindsay's schedule worries me. As it is now, she's playing alot. If she gives into the pressure and plays Miami, which I'm thinking she might, she'll be playing eight straight weeks of tennis - singles and doubles. Any way you look at it, that's just not good.

Elldee
Feb 2nd, 2005, 08:09 PM
I'm positive she won't play Miami. Okay, not positive.

She is off next week, right?

It's hard to skip it when you're number one. The WTA fined Christine a ton when she ditched.

Kelly

or the hip flexor plays up just b4 the tournement starts and lindsay just has to pull out and calls them as she is boarding the plane back to cali....plus she always gets injured at miami.....LINDSAY...DONT PLAY IT!

im sure she will be conveniently injured like she will be at RG!

Feb 3rd, 2005, 07:51 PM
Play Miami. Beat up on shit players and then tank in the QF. Those are some good cheap points there.

Her schedule indeed creeps me out. It seems like she's playing a whole bunch of tourneys in a few months so that she can retire knowing she's played enough... :(

Lindsay has also pulled out of Doha, but will still be playing Dubai.

LindsayRulez
Feb 5th, 2005, 03:27 AM
good, Dubai without Doha is much better!

Andrew.
Feb 5th, 2005, 03:29 AM
I still think it's dumb to go over there and play just one tournament, then have to haul ass just to make it back to Indian Wells in time.

that's true, maybe she'll pull out of Dubai as well. But she likes to play a tournament before the big ones, like Indian Wells. If she does play, she should be okay because she has a nice 3 week long break right now. rest up and get some massages on that hamstring, Lindsay!

Lindsayfan
Feb 10th, 2005, 10:24 PM
i cannot believe she's committed in dubai! it's so weird, it has never been part of her schedule and i would be really surprised if she plays there!
anyway...a few weeks and we'll have the answer but i'm quite sure that she'll pull out and we'll see her back on court in Indian Wells like every year ;)

Kelly
Feb 10th, 2005, 10:33 PM
i think she is playing it because its a newish tourny, never played b4 and wont be on tour next year...so i think we will see a couple of newish event on her schedule. maybe she will play eastbourne again....maybe birmingham

lindsayno1
Feb 11th, 2005, 11:50 AM
Birmingham i wish!!! its like 20 mins for me.... somehow i dont think she will play a tier III though!

I hope she plays Eastbourne. Seriously cheap Tier II points to whore up there.

Elldee
Feb 12th, 2005, 09:07 AM
Yep, and Cincinnatti.

Lindsayfan
Feb 12th, 2005, 08:18 PM
yep but she played Strasbourg just to practise a little bit on red clay. she had skipt the whole european clay season, so it was justifiable. Cincinnati is still a mistery to me LOL

Andrew.
Feb 12th, 2005, 08:55 PM
I think in Cinci they paid her a huge appearance fee. That was the only logical reason for her to play.

Elldee
Feb 12th, 2005, 09:25 PM
I think she played Cincinnatti because she wanted to play one more tournement before the US Open but have a week straight before it.. so she didn't want to play New Haven.

Andrew.
Feb 13th, 2005, 12:11 AM

Lindsay always likes to play the week before a slam, so probably not.

And it's a fact that the tournament was sitting on cash, which backs up the appearance fee theory.

RayRob
Feb 13th, 2005, 02:39 PM
I thought Lindsay might pull out of Doha. As for the Duai Duty Free.....well, it is silly to travel over there to come all the way back to Indian Wells. Back in the day ;) Lindsay used to play Scottsdale the week that is now Dubai.......it made more sense to have a tournie in the States that week ready for Indian. Can't beleive they changed it!

Oh well, let's hope Lindsay won't be too jet lagged by it all!

Andrew.
Feb 13th, 2005, 05:31 PM
Again, I think a big appearance fee played a part here.
