i think no1 is a possibility.i havent seen her this year but people say her serve has improved.is it true.i dont understand the defending of last years points thing but if she improved so much this year she should get lots of points compared to last year in the aussi open.and a decent result in sydny so she is doing well.i think lena is so talented she can make an impression at all her tournies this year[semis, final]maybe not so good in gs's but a semi in one or 2 would be not too bad.maybe a final at french or us.how many wta tournies must she win to get to no.1 along with say..a 3th rd a 4th rd and 4th rd in the gs's.i havent seen her but as some of you have maybe ur predictions would be accurate.how does she look at the moment.did she omly win hassalt last year.if so i think she can get a great amount of points this season.i think she is capable of 5 tour victories.a better serve and she'll compete everywhere even on wimby.another place where points could be picked up

I think number 1 is impossible. She must remain in the top 10. Top 5 is possible.
She has a lot of points to defend with Roland Garros and the US Open (also Miami and Moscow). That is a tough job. She lost last year 1st round Wimbledon. That's a good opportunity to score some points. This year starts pretty good for Elena comparing with last year.
Her serve improved a bit but she is not consistent with it. If she get a decent serve she has the abillities to become number 1. I am sure about that because she is the best player of the WTA at the baseline. At the Aussie Open she didn't play her best tennis. I think it was not a smart choice of Elena to play doubles yesterday because she was not 100% fit in the match against Schnyder. And that's very important for her game with all her running on the court. The match against Hantuchova was tough so I think it was smarter to take some rest. I have seen a couple of matches of Elena on TV and I think she is in pretty good shape. She was just too tired against Schnyder.
Hasselt was indeed her only title last year. Great final by the way against Bovina. 1-4 and 0-40 behind but she managed to win. She is a real fighter. So she could score some points this year but she has to defend 4 finals of big (2 gs and 2 Tier 1) tournaments. But she is capable. It will be a tough season but I am sure it will be a great one too. I wish her good luck!!

Top 3, but she needs to work on that serve also she needs to take breaks between tournaments so she doesn't get burned out. :D

No way for no. 1. in general i predict that S. Williams will back to the top spot with Sharapova that seems to be stronger each tournament. Davenport will stay at the top but she'll probably retire in some point this year thus she is irrelevant to Lena ranking. I reckon that Svetlana will be very strong. Myskina is unpredictable, Mauresmo will stay high unless her injuries, V. wiliams will improve but it depent on how much tournoments she will play. it's will be very hard for lena to catch them.
I think that the most important mission of lena this year is psychologically- is she will belong to the super league players (like those above) or that she will be in the level of the players like schnyder, Deschy and etc.
the consensus among experts is that Lena is very talented player with some great tennis in her hands. nevertheless, they doubt how much she belongs to the highest level. last year she had some glorious wins, but she also lost many matches against lower ranking players (many of them in the 1r). Mauresmo for example does'nt have any Grandslam title and she was only once in GS final, but she is top player because she allmost never lose to player that don't belong to the highest level. if lena will be able to be much more stable and win the matches that she suppose to win, she'll be in the top ranking, even if no at no. 1 or 2.

I think a reasonable guess would be top 5. She seems to always falter midway through the match which seems like a psychological problem.

I think that no. 1 is impossible in this year but top 5 should be.
Lena become no. 1 when she improve her serve much more. It's her only weakness.
Apart of this she has everything to become no. 1 - she is a fighter, she is the best player at the baseline.
I saw Lena in TV and I have to say that she is in good shape, She lost to Patty Schnyder because she was too tired. I think it will be good idea if Lena will play less tournament (but more matches in each).
I wish ger good luck in this season.

how many wta tour matches she play average in a season.how many she lose in 1st round last year.plus in 2 grand slams.already she is up on last year with a little bit better serve also.so she can win a couple of tier 1's and maybe a couple of 4th rounds at rg and us and she'll be up there.i dont understand points thing.example:if she gets to 4th round at us and masha gets there also who gets more points.does lena lose points or just get less.does she have to win us to improve points.as for williams they are fading i think and lena will be confident if against either.lindsay retiring.myskina will be worse this year i think and lena can take sveta.i honestly believe a little improvement on serve[a few free points now and again]and lena could be 1 or 2 in world.

oh,mmm,ur right but doesnt she take brakes before grand slams.she should stop the damn doubles[i think it contributed to patty loss]and look after herself.she should rest during a niggle injury if it is a crap tournament and beat the players ranked below all the time.aussi open and sydney were decent starts.i hope it is a sign and level of the year to come

@Ronaldo777
If you score points depends on the results of the year before.
Elena scored points at the Aussie Open because she lost last year 1st round.
But if Elena loses in the 4th round of Roland Garros then she will lose points because she was in the final last year. So the only way to score points at the US Open this year would be to win it. She already would lose points if she loses in the semis.

It's odd how Elena dropped in rankings despite gaining points.... oh well. I'll say top 5

so if she played no tournies this year and played well next year she get lots of points.that cant be right.does some of the points be inherited from last year for the start of the new season.how does that work.just say lenas no.4 in the world starting a tourny and sveta is no.5.and lena won it last year and sveta got to rd 2.if lena gets to semi and sveta gets to rd 3 she could get more points than lena.thats not really fair since lena got further

ronaldo777, the points earned for the tourny last years come off, and the points gained this year are added on.
E.g. at USO 2004, elena gained about 800 points for final, which will come off at this years USO. If Lena loses before Finals this year, she will lose ranking points, as points earned will be less than the points taken off.

hope that helps :)

#1 is quite impossible, even top 5 will be hard task with the belgian back on track.
Lena has to defend 2 GS finals and a tier 1 final. Not much, IMO. However Serena,Davenport and Mauresmo will remain top 5. That will leave a direct fight with Myskina Kuznetsova and Sharapova for a top 5 place. Indeed Nastya is unpredictable, but I think she will regain soon enough the #1 Russian. I don't see Capriati and Venus rising, but Molik will.
I look forward to the 2005 season :)

cheers guys that is a great help.but i think serens and nastya will struggle and dementieva is better than sveta.a good wimbledon is a must and i'd be satisfied with 2 quarters in the other 2.i can see lena winning a couple of events on tour.plus didnt she have like 14 1st round exits last year.turn half of these into 3rd and lena will keep her spot at 6 with ease.say if lenas serve was about 30% out of a hundred last year.how much has it improved in % at aussi.i heard it was a bit better
