Yes or no, whatever, she's still great.

Using 2004 as the measure, she's accomplished more at that age than Venus or Serena. The corresponding year for Venus would be 1997. The corresponding year for Serena, 1998.

Well said Volcana. I think it's important for Maria to continue to improve at a steady pace so she can become a great tennis player someday.

I want some quantitative data...The year she turned 17, Serena didn't win a tournament.
The year she turned 17, Venus didn't win a tournament.

The Maria Sharapova turned 17, last year, she won Wimbledon and the YEC. Venus and Serena both won Tier I's at 18. We may well decide Sharapova 18 isn't as good as Venus or Serena at that age.

But we can only measure the current body of work. Sharapova won five tournament last year, the year she turned 17. She won two the year before, the year she turned 16. Not my favorite player, but let's not blind ourselves. The girl has ability, and has performed at an extraordinary level.

well from just goin purely on titles (the big ones) etc, you can argue maria is already better than graf and navratilova when they were 17 (i think graf won RG at 18 and navratilova wimbledon in her 20's. Its way too early to tell how good maria is, but having the YEC and wimbledon and scoring wins over the top players is a big achievement for a 17 year old. The question is, how good will maria be at 22-24.

Hardly, neither is Serena or Venus.
Well not yet anyway, each of them still has time to achieve that title. I'm cheering for Maria, you for Serena. If this was an icehockey match I'd expect us to be whacking eachothers with metal chairs soon...
It's been brought up many times already but it still amazes me how the Sisters' fans are intimidated by Maria's success. For the love of God nobody is denying their achievements, far from it. But you can't expect them to rule the sport forever. There are going to be challengers, if it wasn't Maria it'd be someone else. And they're still at the top of the sport so why whine. And why am I wasting my breath with this?

I disagree with you there Volcana...You are using the YEAR in which they turn 17...Now if Maria was born in the same MONTH as Serena or vice-versa then we can talk...

However, Serena was born at the VERY end of September which is closing in at the end of the tennis season and there are really no BIG tournaments to be played and really only a couple events to be played anyway...

Maria turned 17 in April so it was easier to play at this age since a boatload of tennis were to be played...

When Serena turned 17 the tennis season was coming to a close so I don't think it is fair to compare Serena in 1998 vs. Maria in 2004 since Maria was at a age when tennis was in it's "height" of the year and Serena turned 17 right before the off-season when all Grand Slams and major tournaments had been played...

I'm definitely not intimidated by her sucess. I think the tour has space for everyone. Maria has her space, like Serena, Amelie, Venus, Lindsay and every player, has it's own. I just hate that everyone compare her to Serena and Venus.. Why?

Are them the only players at the top 10? I think the Sharapova fans hate the Williams sisters.. Dunno why, cuz every thread, has a bit of bitterness toward them... And comparing Maria to them it's just a proof that they wish that Maria ever had a career like them, and also becomes a player like them.. but they're just too proud to ever admit this.. Because they hate the players they admire.. It's just too tough for them to admit that they wish Maria was a player like or better than Serena and Venus..

That's why I think there are hundreds of threads like this "Sharapova leads 3-1 against Williams sister.." "Sharapova better now then Venus and Serena at 17?" "Sharapova better than Venus?" and etc.. :o

Well I'm not sure I quite follow your though process, but I for one am quite happy with Maria's career so far, and most likely will be in the future. I aknowledge the success of the Williams sisters and think they've had, and still have a great career. Comparisons between such successfull players are inevitable and neither side should take offense of them. I don't think it's embarrasing to say Maria is leading against the Williamses, few can say that and their (Williams) fans should be glad it is so. But like so many arguments here, I doubt this one is leading to anything either. Prove me wrong!

OK i get some of your point, but the last bit. There have been threads in the past like "is serena better than seles at 20", "is venus better than Hingis". "are the willimas better than Navratiolva in her prime" etc-this is gonna happen whenever your comparing players. Serena and venus are really the oldest 2 in the top 10 that are the only ones that had success at a young age. ones like Davenport, capriati, myskina, justine, etc were not winning slams and competing at 16/17 with the top players, so the only references are serena and venus.
