View Full Version : Could Anna Smashnova beat Venus tomorrow?

The way she's been playing in her last two rounds, I think she's actually got an outside shot.

The last four sets she's played, she's made a grand total of 14 ERRORS. In 28 games. So every two games she's hitting one unforced error. If she's playing like that, the only way Venus will win is by hitting more winners than errors. Venus has played well, particularly in her last match, but you never really know how that forehand is going to hold up.

What do you guys think? I'm thinking Venus if she's playing well, but if she's not it will go three sets, and then maybe Anna has a chance.

Hell no. Anna has a 1 in a 568459488430301 chance to win against Venus tomorrow.

Not much of a chance - she is going to have to be a lot more agressive!
I remember when she played Serena in YEC - I don't think she even hit one winner - she will have to do much better against Venus today.

Venus's forehand tends to hold up unless it's put under severe pressure, i.e. from relentless hard hitting directed at it, or when the scoreline's tight. Smashnova can't put pressure on it. If it breaks down vs Smashnova... :tape:

Ana has chance, but not likely. Unless ana totally believes in it.

Why would you be surprise?Considering Venus record over the last 4 GS, it wont surprise me.

to me Anna is the favourite in this match, Venus was a great player but she is in decline. Venus will never win another slam.

Anna stands no chance; Venus was playing the way she is now this summer at Stanford, and she embarrassed Anna love and 3 or something like that...Smashnova barely won points in the first set...

Anna has almost no chance. Not impossible, but I dont see it.

I don't think she has a chance. Only if she comes more to the net even more than her two previous matches and have the same great success. Then she can rush Venus like Suzuki did to Federer and maybe suprise. Venus passing shots maybe are better than Tanasugarn but Anna can catch her off guard.

But i doubt she will do that :o anyway Good luck tomorrow :)

P.S Unfortunately I think your teory is false because Venus will need more winners, forced errors and unreturned serves (same as forced errors?) than UE and I think she will get that. :(

I think Anna won't make more than 4 games.

Anna played like crap for most of last year. The way she is playing this tournament seems to be like her old '02 form, when she reached #15 in the rankings. If Anna plays the way she did last year, then yes, Venus will bitch smack her silly. But if Anna continues her top form in this match against Venus and can get Venus flustered, that forehand is going to start breaking down and Anna will have a real chance at this match.

Anna at her best was a pretty big force on hardcourts. She took out a top 15 Shaughnessy, a top 15 Dementieva, a top 10 Henin-Hardenne, and a top 10 Dokic that year. She's also scored hardcourt wins over a top 10 Myskina, top 15 Zvonereva, top 15 Petrova, top 15 Farina-Elia, and top 15 Sugiyama.

I'm not saying she's the favorite, folks, but beating Venus can definitely be done by her.

I think saying anna has a lot of unforced errors as something good might be a little unfair.
she got her nickname "the wall" simply because she can return evrything - but unfortunatly, she does just that - returns balls back into court.
no winners, no power, no angles - practically no nothing.
she moves around just as good as dementieva, maybe slower . she reads serves and big points really well too.
but that just inables her to return the ball.
if you're inconsistent with each point alla vera zvonareva, petrova or even myskina - beware of this little package - because she can get anything - you have to hit a winner to take a point.
but venus is the kind of player that can play in a good form throughout all the match.
and so -
Venus beats anna 6-3 6-3.

Anna is a technically better player than Venus, Venus only relies on strength and her name now, her touch is fading, she is too slow around the court... Venus is really not a top 10 player anymore, she is living off past glories, I think this will be a straight sets win for Smashnova.

I don't think so, she has nothing to hurt Venus and Venus' serve is too big for her to attack.

If Anna "The Wall" Smashnova produces a weapon over night then she has a chance. But since she's still a wall to my knowledge and averages like 3 winners a match I'm not seeing an Anna win here.

But Venus will smack her in two easy sets.

Could Anna Smashnova beat Venus tomorrow? YES! IF Anna comes out swing a bat or a lead pipe.
Seriously though...
There's always an outside chance that any player will produce that incredible upset over an elite player. But judging from the way Venus has been playing, Anna would need to break Vee's serve, take out her bh, and kick it into third gear to do it. Can you see that happening? ;)

I saw Vee play Anna Smashnova at Stanford when I visited and she was less than impressive. Venus did not play that well and she managed to beat her easily. Vee in 2 sets.

This is Anna's 39th Grand Slam. She has reached the 4th round only twice previously. I can't see her challenging Venus at all. I would be surprised if Venus lost more than 5 games. But I would be happy to be wrong. It's been almost 7 years since she last reached a final sixteen of a slam and after last year it would be nice for her to have something to celebrate.

If Anna gets married again she shouldn't give up her maiden name next time. When you've got the the best name in women's tennis you shouldn't give it up just because you are getting married.

Anna has now power to push Venus. Only way she'll win is if Venus commits error after error after error by going for too much.

I think Anna does have a chance. If Venus comes out there and plays a sloppy match it could be a tought three seter and in three sets anything can happen. But to be honest the out come of the match is not in Anna hands for her to win Venus has to have a off day and Anna needs to play the match of her life, The problem is Venus moves better than Anna she hits the ball harder knows Anna cant really attack her second serve. Is not a great vollyer and will not come to the net unlessed really made to. But then what do I know, I was sure Venus was gonna beat Lisa last year 2 and 2 last year and looked what happened.

So after me saying all that look for a upset guys

Venus 6-2 6-2, Anna really has nothing to hurt venus, unless she rallies venus to death and venus has an off serve and FH day, but even then she will be lucky to get a set.
