We have seen several demonstrations of protected rankings in recent years, Monica, Steffi and Julie Harlard Decugis have all benefited from this. It now seems Mary Pierce has also received a protected ranking (Matthias said No.13), as she is seeded No.2 for the Hong Kong Ladies Challenge (I know it is only an exhibition, but still seedings go by rankings and she is ranked ahead of Elena D and Amanda).

Does this protected ranking mean the she will be seeded in the top 16 for the AUstralian OPen as Monica was seeded co -No.1 for USO 1995/oz 1996/French 1996 and steffi was seeded No.4 and No.8 respectively for Wimby and USO 98?

Does anyone have any information on this? It seems a little confusing that she has received a wildcard, yet could possibly be seeded.

The biggest losers if Mary does take a seed are Amanda Coetzer (who will lose a top 16 seed) and Conchita Martinez who will fall out of the seedings all together. Is this fair?

As far as i know Protective rankings do not count in Grand Slams, so Mary should not be seeded - obviously <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
