View Full Version : Amelie's enthusiasm for Hingis' return

BBC Online 'quotes of the day'

"I have nothing to say, absolutely nothing at all. Nothing. Nothing."

Amelie Mauresmo when asked to comment on Martina Hingis' comeback. Hingis upset Mauresmo at the 1999 Australian Open when she reportedly described the Frenchwoman as "half a man".

Didn't Hingis apologize? If yes, then Amelie should get over it and move on. Heck, everybody I know saids that she looks like a man. Sure it shouldn't be said in public, but it's reality. Hingis was still very young and people make mistakes. If Hingis apologized, I think Amelie should forgive her and move on.

Amelie's actually said that Hingis finally appologized (last year, btw) and that she's over it (tought to do when people insisit on asking about it again and again). That doesn't mean she has a new best friend.

I'm sure if she'd made happy noises, people would accuse her of not being genuine.

(don't know about your friends, but I've never mistaken her for a man. Then again, I actually LIKE women ;) )

I don't see the big deal. She had nothing to say, didn't want to get into the issue again, and you know those comments would have come up for the 39475209384752098547th time. Is done, over with; time to move on. It's the press who's looking to fuel the fire and good on Amélie for refusing to give them anything.

There is nothing wrong with Amelie's response whether Hingis apologized or not. I'm sure she moved on...she doesn't owe Hingis any praise. I always say forgive but NEVER forget. Hingis meant that shit..she never should have said it in the first place.

Amelie doesn't really strike me as the kind to hold a grudge.

Or if she did she probably got over it.

I don't think there's much in this quote at all personally - it's difficult though unless you've actually witnessed her saying it I concede.

Maybe Momo didn't understand the question and was busting for the loo. Or maybe she's traumatized because her tormentor, Little Marti Hingis, has just been paroled from injury prison and is afraid that Marti's gonna come back and joke her to death again. :p ;)

You obviously need to check your facts. Not to mention looking at Amélie again. Her body and face look nothing like a man's... Martina said something altogether different than what Lindsay said. Lindsay apologized and spoke to the press about the misinterpretation of her comments. You really can't tie the two together much.

If Mauresmo was really over this incident, she would have spoken about Hingis in a more professional way. She could have said that Hingis is a former #1 player and who has won 5 grandslams and that it would be very exciting for the fans and for tennis to see her back. But instead she was childish.

What's unprofessional about not commenting?

I think it's kinda interesting to watch some people want to justify what was a cruel and insulting comment on one hand, but bitch about Mauresmo declining to comment at all on the other :)

Let's say that whatever you say can be interpreted differently....A poster that does not like Mauresmo or like Hingis (or both...) will always find something wrong if Mauresmo says something...or even when she says nothing!!!

but Griffin, where did you see that Hingis apologized to amelie? I'm curious when Amelie said that.

It was in an interview she did with one of the French TV programs last winter/fall - someone posted a video link and translation on Gerd's board. From what I gather (my french is affreuse, I'm relying on the translations of other fans) Hingis approached her at the 2003 YEC and apologized. When the interview expressed (shock? scorn?) that it had taken so long, Amelie said something along the lines of "it's not like we're at each other's house for dinner a lot for her to have had the opportunity"

Sonja or one of the other Momosapiens can correct me if I've got it wrong.

she simply made the smart move and refused to take the bait. doesn't mean she has grudges or a sour relationship.

some players know when to say "I don't wish to talk about the others or make comparisons".

if even if you have an opinion, you have every right to keep it to yourself. it doesn't mean you're being a bitch.

So I assume you're implying we're not fair. If you personally insult a player we won't allow it, doesn't matter who it is. Otherwise, you shouldn't have a problem with us just because a few of us are Mauresmo supporters. You'll find we all follow the same rules.

Wait a second here. I think Steffi Graf is the greatest player ever, but why do you see fit to constantly belittle other players just because other people think they were better? Just accept that not EVERYONE will agree with you and move on, it will certainly make everyone's life a lot easier.

Volcana
Jan 21st, 2005, 11:24 PM
If Hingis apologized, I think Amelie should forgive her and move on.Why? What's such an apology worth? Hingis, as was always her wont, said what was in her heart. I can well believe she didn't apologize for it til last year. She's grown and matured a lot in those four years. I can easily see her realizing that she'd said a really hurtful thing in 1999, and when the opportunity came, took the time to apologize personally.

But I have no faith in these apologies because what I said made me lok bad. Those are 'covering your ass' apologies. Just once, I'd like to hear a tennis player say what John Lennon said the next day AFTER he said the Beatles coming to America was 'bigger than Jesus Christ'.

The next day, he said 'of course that's not true. It was a really stupid thing to say and I shouldn't have said it.' None of this, 'Oh i'm sorry if I offended anybody' crap.

As for Amelie's response, don't you think that every time someone asks her about Hingis, 'half-a-man' is somewhere inthe next two sentences. Wouldn't YOU get sick of hearing yourself described that way?

Calimero377

I accept that not everyone will agree with me. Actually it would be very boring if everybody did just that.
And even if I would move on everyone's life would not be easier. Because the easyness of live is not affected by tennis fans' opinions in an obscure internet tennis forum. And therefore I won't move on ...

BTW, could it be that you take debates between objective tennis fans (a.k.a. Graf fans) and delusional Selesians/Navratilovers way to serious?
Maybe?

I faintly recall what Mauresmo's then-girlfriend said about the incident. Mauresmo saw the newspapers, first she was very happy to see them "Oh look, I'm on front page" then she read the articles, expecting them to cover how she had beaten #1 player in the world...only to find out there was almost nothing about the match itself. What there was however was much sensationalizing about her relationship, Davenport's post-match comments (which were supposed to be a compliment) taken out of context and Hingis' infamous "joke". I'm no Mauresmo fan but I sure won't blame her that she took it pretty hard. Martina's pre-school level defence sure didn't help: "Never said that/okay, I did but it was misunderstood/it was just a joke/so what, I'll win anyway"...
