i thought dinara might have a breakthrough year this year, having taken a set of a couple of top 10ers in slams last year, and winning against 2 pretty good players already this year. she took a set but couldnt hold it together after the first set, mauresmo was getting everything back and dinara wasnt serving very well. one thing for sure is that dinara doesnt have a plan b and thats want hurt her in the match, no plan b and her game is very one dimensional. she was hitting well when the ball was coming onto the racket but when mauresmo sliced it or floated it back dinara couldnt control it very well.

Pretty straight forward, once Momax found her rhythm.

Good test for Momo she needs that cause it will make her stronger for the second week, and she did not play a warm up tournement. Safina talented but a bit Vera like and gets furstratred way too quick.

Interesting match. Watched the entire 3 setter "live".

First set was all Dinara controls, AM was doing her usual
sitting in the back nothing shots, plus her serve was crap.
Everything was going straight
to Dinara's hitting range.

2nd set, AM wakes up, and hits deeper, cuts UE, serves better
and get's her butt off the baseline and finished points at the net.
Mid way in the second set, fatigue and a whole lot of long rallies
wears Dinara down a bit. She was sucking air, and doing a homage
to Patrick Rafter with too much sweating.

3rd set. Dinara is melting, really melting. She is red face, sweating
buckets and huffing after each point, during change over every second.
AM is simply starting and playing immaculate tennis. Dinara can't
seem to get any range or serves in anymore.

End of match.

The last two sets were far more tight than the score indicates. Most of the games in the second set were long deuce games.

Dinara just died, that's what happened. After she couldn't bring it back to 3-2 in the second, it was a total tank.

dinara was hitting her shots much better in the first set, she was forcing mauresmo outwide alot especially on the backhand so when mauresmo did slice the ball had to travel much further and therefore she hit alot of them into the net. the the last 2 sets dinara wasnt getting mauresmo outwide, she hit down the middle a lot more and wasnt getting as close to the lines or getting quite as good angles. but mauresmo certainly did pick up her game and played really well. she looks very fit and is getting lots of balls back and she is mixing up her shots as good or better than i have seen her do before so she looks to be a contender.

she will go down to Ivanovic with that kind of play in my opinion. that is the type of match i think serena would have lost a set in too seeing she hasn't played any matches just like amelie.

dinara must improve on her fitness. she was looking visibly tired by the start of the 2nd set:eek:

i thought she really played very well in the 1st set, but once fatigue snd temper steps in, it was clear she was going to lose:mad:

Thanks for the 'reports' Gowza and Greenout! :D (Eurosport only managed to show us 'match point' - they think Tommy Haas vs. K. Beck is far more interesting! ;) )

Bien joué Amélie!! But please reduce the u'e's! ;)

As soon an 'Cana started the thread in GM about Denara "giving Mauresmo hell", the match did a 360.

There was an enormous battle at the very start of the second set according to the scoreboard - Safina wouldn't be the first player to tire after that.

I think Mauresmo was just too fit and too strong. Dinara played really well in the first set and the start of the second, but a couple of really long rallies and games wore her down, while Amelie wasn't affected in the least.

I just watched only the 1st set and thought that she would upset Momo. :(
Apparently I was wrong. Anyway, Good job Momo. I hope that she will beat Serena in QF. :bounce: I want to see you compete with Masha. ;)

Okay, I'm back from the tennis centre.

I was there for this match, and I can tell you how it happened. Dinara came out playing huge ... going for every single shot. Reminded me a bit of how Masha played Serena at Wimby. I don't think Amelie quite knew what hit her. She was trying everything, but her serve wasn't reliable, she was getting into too many baseline rallies, and Dinara was pretty much outhitting her. Dinara was very powerful and precise from the baseline. Worse, every little bit of luck seemed to go Dinara's way.

Amelie gradually started to figure Dinara out. She started using clever placement, making Dinara run around in a way that was obviously bothering Dinara a lot. It was also obvious that Dinara was having trouble controlling the spins Amelie was generating, even though she was hitting with a lot more pace (though just now and then Amelie would whip one really quite hard). As far as the first set went, though, it was too little too late. Amelie was starting to get the better of the rallies but she was already down a double break and she just couldn't break back. Dinara won 6-2.

By this time, Amelie had Dinara figured out, and she was starting to work her into a state of exhaustion. Dinara managed to break Amelie once in the second set, but she couldn't hold her own serve even once for the rest of the match. A lot of Dinara's service games went to deuce, but Amelie was always there like a terrier, finding ways to move her around get her tired, wrong foot her, while seeming to trouble her with shots that looked almost effortless.

Amelie would always break through and end up getting just enough points to squeak it out and break Dinara's serve.

As the match went on, Dinara was getting more and more tired and frustrated, though still hitting with a lot of power. As others have said, she didn't seem to have a plan B. With Amelie playing more tightly and dictating the points despite Dinara's greater pace, Dinara seemed to get down on herself. She certainly didn't tank the match, but she seemed to run out of ideas.

Verdict: Amelie is playing very smart, though she doesn't look as happy out there as she did last year. I'm not sure whether she'll be able to crank up to the needed level when she has to play some really top players, e.g. Serena. But she was much too clever for Dinara today, as well as showing that she has power in reserve when she needs to it. There's no doubt that she's playing within herself at the moment, for whatever reason.

Dinara strikes me as a very considerable but raw talent. She really needs to work with players like Amelie to put some extra dimensions into her game. If she could do so, she might go a long way.

Momo :woohoo: Well Done. :yeah:
I watched the match too. Despite all these stupid comments towords the Chinese. Safina was playing a good first set and Momo didn't do a lot in the first set. She was playing not bad but Momo was definitely started to "play" at the second set. Than I noticed that Safina was struggling at the end of the second set and at the third it looks like she was melting. :bolt: It sounds like there will be some players who will struggling in the heat. Well AO is famous for it's heat. ;)
I'm just happy that Momo won. :worship:

It seems Dinara lost fitness and concentration after a good start.

Eurosport showed a short film with Momo cycling up a mountain in 1 hour 20 minutes, beating everyone else in the training camp, so she's pretty fit.

The physical condition of Amelie saved her once again :) She managed to not lose the control and to pass Safina without worriying...let's go to Ivanovic now !!
