Starts off slow at the beginning of every year
Serena- look at Venus.
Hingis- BYE BYE
Clijsters- Should get pretty far she could win
Henin- I see her getting to a semi
Capriatti- Her comeback year was last year. She has dont what she wanted to do.I dont see her being much of a threat here at all.

ok everyone elses opinion welcome.
TexasTech, tell me what year besides 2001 for Venus, and 2000 for Serena that they haven't been prepared? One year for both is the only time I've seen them unprepared. I really don't like to pick because at the AO there is always a surprise finalist or winner. But I say the semis will probably be Venus, Serena, Lindsay, and Monica. Outside fav. Justine, Kim, and Martina could take the place of one of the four.

Martina Hingisova - there no tiebreaks in the third sets!

Back to question: I don't know how Lindsay's knee is OK or not so, I leave it alone. I really want Mary Pierce win the Australian Open LOL!

i think serena will win.
i´m not a big fan from her, but i think she will do it.
if not, then i think lindsay could do it

Dec 23rd, 2001, 09:50 PM
QueenV, ur predictions for semifinalist on form are very reasonable, unfortunately Lindsay, Monica, Serena OR Venus, Monica, Serena could all be in the same quarter of the draw due to their seedings, which is would see them cancel eachother out by the semis

A lot of chances will be dispelled or enhanced by the outcome of the draw, we'll just have to wait

Crazy Canuck
Dec 23rd, 2001, 09:51 PM
If Lindsay doesnt have to play Serena or Venus, I think she is a sure bet - so long as her knees aren't bothering her. But she has had plenty of time to rest them.

If everyones predictions had gone smoothly last year, there would have been no Hingis or no Jenn in the semi finals, let alone finals. I still think Hingis will make the last 4 - unless perhaps she meets Serena before hand, where Serena may want revenge. Hingis was in hideous form going into the US Open, and she still reached the semis there (on a favourable draw, granted). So untill she loses, I will beleive she can do it again

So long as she isn't injured, is Venus playing one, or two warm up events? With her it doesn't seem to matter as much - she won Wimbledon 2000 off of little to no prep. So if I had to throw money down right now, I'd put it on Venus. Or Serena for that matter, if someone else beats Venus for her.

hmmm....after all that rambling, I notice that I have no idea.

Dec 23rd, 2001, 09:53 PM
Lindsay in a thrilling final against Serena!

Dec 23rd, 2001, 09:59 PM
Mostly everyone on the board has Serena in a final or winning OZ.. I agree Serena is going to be a major threat to whoever she plays... I think this year is going to be her year.. I just feel it like I felt it in the finals of the 1999 US Open.. Because according to history whoever wins or makes the finals of the year end championships either wins OZ or makes the finals.. But i have a hunch that Oracene is pushing Serena harder this year..

Dec 23rd, 2001, 11:33 PM
Tennisaddict, true. I just remembered that Lindsay's quarter of the draw at the US Open had Serena #10 and Justine #6 in it, and she was seeded #3. I really hope that Venus doesn't get the same misfortune of having Serena and Monica in her quarter. Atleast Serena anyway. I wouldn't mind seeing Monica or Martina in the semis as long as they don't take out one of my favs. along the way.

Dec 24th, 2001, 12:39 AM
i'm see a martina-venus final
their matches are always so intriguing
with martina winning (i hope)
but a martina-(anyone else she can beat easily) final would be great too.

regarding the rest, i dont see jen going far.(granted a quarters, but what if she draws sandrine, whom she has lost to in their past meetings in the indoor season).

serena and venus should get to the semis at least. so should martina and lindsay. i dont think kim or justine at any rate can get past this 4. kim might if she draws martina. justine might if she draws venus.
That's fine TexasTech maybe the 2001 AO was the only year you've watched Venus play LOL. Since you didn't really give me an answer that's what I'll assume. ok I guess they just sucked in 99 and 2000. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Dec 24th, 2001, 04:49 AM
Actually TexasTech Venus lost to Lindsay in 1999 in the QF. That wasn't really a big upset not at the time anyway. Serena lost to Testud that year in only her second AO, but she also won the US Open that year so I wouldn't say her year sucked. Would you? In 2000 Venus didn't play, but she came back to win 2 GS's if you haven't forgotten. So I wouldn't actually say her year sucked either. I already told you that 2000 was the year Serena didn't prepare and went out in the 4th round.

If you have no idea what your talking about than don't talk please and stop lumping their results together. How were you giving them the benefit of the doubt when you clearly said they're never prepared. You doubted them from the get go. But don't you go feeling special now, they've had many doubter your just another one added to the list.

Heres a more realistic prediction:
Quarters:

1. Lindsay Davenport df 6. Serena Williams 7:5, 6:2

5. Kim Clijters df 4. Martina Hingis 6:4, 2:6, 7:5

7. Justin Henin df 3.Venus Williams 7:5, 7:6

9. Monica Seles df 2. Jeniffer Capriati 6:4, 3:6, 6:1

1. Lindsay Davenport df. 5. Kim Clijsters 6:3, 7:5
9. Monica Seles df. 7. Justin Henin 6:7, 6:3, 7:6 ( match of the tournament)

1. Lindsay davenport df 9. Monica Seles 6:3, 6:4

Champion: Lindsay Davenport

Dec 24th, 2001, 05:13 AM
Serena's results at the AO are nothing to shout about , but Venus has done okay if you asked me... She's played it 3 times with the following results...

1998- ¼ finals
1999- ¼ finals
2001- semi finals with just 11 days to prepare. This year she did not attend Fashion School, so I would not bet against her

Dec 24th, 2001, 06:30 AM
In 1998 Serena defeat Irina that was one of the seeds of the tournament, then losing to Venus...

In 1999, she lost to Testud but I don't know who did she defeat in first round... I guess was Irina again.

In 2000 hmmm, a 4th round, where she could have at least reach at the semis...

In 2001, was her best year...

So in terms of development in her game, Serena will do much better in 2002

Dec 24th, 2001, 06:34 AM
I actually thinks that if Serena faces Lindsay, Lindsay will lose again...
I don't know their game seems to do not combine... That's why so many loses of Lindsay to Serena...

QueenV I know what im talking about. I refuse to argue on message boards. Never have never will. I didnt say Venus and Serena suck the entire year. I say they suck in the first part of the year. Roland Garros and Aussie Open.

Venus is my favortie player, but im not going to be some biest fan who can't admit the obvious.

Its just a prediction. I base my predictions on how players are prepared in previous years. I also said Venus would win if she came to play, but im being logical.

Dec 24th, 2001, 05:46 PM
TexasTech please you don't have to argue with me. I was simply telling you that what you said wasn't true. You said they are never prepared twice. And then you said in 1999 and 2000 they must have sucked. Like I said you don't know what your talking about. In 1999 they both played the Adidas, and Venus also played an exhibition. She ended up losing to Lindsay in the QF, but I don't see how that would mean she sucked. As for Serena that year it was only her second year and she lost to Testud in the 3rd. How many players get to the semis or finals at the first GS of the year and it's only their second try? 2000 Venus didn't even play, and Serena got to the 4th with no prep.

So stop getting mad because you couldn't answer my original question. All you had to say was that you had no idea. It's ok to admit when your wrong. Instead your trying to turn this around on me acting like I'm some crazy fan when I was just trying to understand why you said they are never prepared. That being said don't talk if you don't know what your talking about, especially coming from a Venus fan. It's embarassing.

Dec 24th, 2001, 06:50 PM
Well, relying on history alone may be a bit misleading, I think, cos the Venus Williams before mid 2000 was a bit different from the one post RG 2000. As Davenport says, her improvement has been amazing. However, I wouldn't mind if Serena or Jennifer wins. Well, may be Justin as well. But will certainly mind if Hingis wins, even though she's overdue for a slam. I wouldn't really mind if Hingis lovers will admit other players are pretty smart too. Afterall, how much differentiation and integration go into playing tennis?

Every player is unprepared atleast once for a tournament. Doesn't mean that every year there on will be the same. I wish someone will give me a year. Every time I ask I never get an answer.

They have never been prepared to win the Australian Open. If they were prepared then one of them would have won it. Venus is the best player hands down. She lost to Hingis horribly last year because she wasnt prepared. Now what about what I have said says that I dont know what im talking about?

Ive never been bashed by another Venus fan, but you seem to be the first. All because I said Venus and Serena have not been prepared in the Past for the Australian Open or Roland Garros. Its fact.

I think it is very difficult to predict, who will win the AO. I never expected Capriati to win last year, but i think that she was lucky in that v. williams and davenport weren't playing their best ( i didn't see the matches, this is just what i heard) I think if the williams sisters are playing below par then davenport would be the most likely to capitalise, considering she's fully fit herself. Capriati is probably next in line after that, but then she hasn't won a title since the french open, however it would be unwise to underestimate her, especially after last year.
The above four will have to play well if they are to beat hingis and the belgians, Hingis especially will be an unknown quantity after the injury but she always plays well at the AO. Seles and Mauresmo I'd say are long shots as although they both have the talent to win they seem to have dips in form/injury quite frequently, if they are fully fit they could both do very well. There could of course be a suprise package, Mary Pierce has won two grand slams and maybe someone else could make a breakthrough. I think Davenport might win, but it will be interesting!

Dec 26th, 2001, 01:29 AM
Goolagong predicts a repeat for Jennifer Capriati.
Look for Jennifer to return to Oz in spectacular form. If she trains hard the title is hers.

Dec 26th, 2001, 11:46 AM
I find this tournament probably the hardest to predict, because of the way that it comes at the end of the break.

But. I will say that I think that martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati are both being much underestimated by everyone here. Hingis has been in the final for 5 years running, and yet there are people here predicting that she won't even get to the 4thR/QF! Wishful thinking, methinks. She'll definitely manage QF and I'd be suprised if she didn't manage SF.

Capriati is still a very dangerous player and when she's on she can beat anyone. Although she hasn't yet beaten Venus, she has had 8 matchpoints against her which shows that she could do it.

If I were predicting on form at the end of the summer, Davenport, Clijsters, Seles, Serena Williams would be the obvious choices. But I just don't think that Lindsay has the motivation anymore. Her recent interviews have indicated that her heart's not really in it. She'll do well, maybe even reach the final, but unless she gets her will to win back she won't win it.

Clijsters could also do well, but I still don't think she's good enough to beat any of the top 4 so probably QF/SF depending on her draw.

Seles can still beat the top players, but I don't think she could do so more than a couple of times in a tournament. So it really depends on her draw.

Serena on recent results would have to be the favourite. But I have a feeling that she won't win. Just a hunch.

Venus. Hasn't played since the U.S. Open but that doesn't seem to make much difference for her. Could win it, but could get knocked out early on by someone like Testud, Maleeva, Shaugnessy.

Henin. I suspect she'll disappoint in this slam. It's not really a good surface for her and expectations are high. 3rd/4th round max.

Mary Pierce. Not a clue. Could win it, could lose in the 1st round. we'll see!

Anna Kournikova. Definitely a dangerous floater. If she gets a good draw, could make 4thR/QF. But because she won't be seeded that's harder to predict.

Others: Sandrine Testud could pull off a suprise win. Elena Dementieva might do well. Conchita Martinez, Amanda Coetzer, Patty Schnyder, Chanda Rubin.
Capriati, Davenport, Seles, Pierce, could ALSO get knocked out early by someone like Testud, Maleeva, Shaughnessy.

Heavy Hitta - but of course others might also get knocked out early by tricky players like Maleeva. What I meant was that Venus seems to be more vulnerable in the early rounds of a slam than in the later rounds. So I think she'll either win it, or get knocked out early on. I don't think that Davenport is very likely to lose before the semis. Capriati has also been very good at getting to the later rounds of tournaments - the danger player for her is Testud who's beaten her twice indoors but I don't see her losing to anyone else until the later rounds.

Lindsay, for sure she is a semifinal
Venus, If she doesn't win it is because Serena does.
Hingis and Jennifer, no way, no chance, Jennifer lost to Anna Kournikova last week, lost twice against Testud , the last weeks of the season, so she is not in her level.

Justine and Kim may reach the semis too.

I think Jennifer is bound to at least reach the semis. Rebound ace suits her game quite nicely as it bounces nice and high into her strike zone. Also, last year, Jennifer lost to Kournikova in Hong Kong and then Lisa Raymond at Sydney before taking the OZ title. I wouldn't read too much in the exhibition match that was just played. Let's keep mind that Anna has beaten many people in exhibition matches (notably Davenport last year...). Come on Jenny -- prove your nay-sayers wrong and crush the competition!
