:) Maria is such an inspiration for us parents in Germany who wish to homeschool. She had the freedom in the US to follow her dream.

We are fighting for the right to homeschool here in Germany. Many parents have been put in jail and others are being threatened with fines and jailtime.

I write all the German government officials: would you put Maria Sharapova, winner of Wimbledon's, parents in jail for homeschooling?

Would you slam Venus and Serena's parents, and Gwynith Paltrow's parents with fines?

When Juniors are really good here in Germany, they have to go to a Tennis Academy where school and tennis are mixed bureacratically. The parents rarely live near one so the support and love of parents are cut out of the player's development.

Thank you Maria for being an inspiration!

I guess it would be the same here. You're just obliged to follow education till your 16th.

They would have to change the law, if they just say you're not obliged to follow education anymore, a lot of abuse of the law would ensue.

So they would need to remain strict. A strict selection for example, but that would probably cause people accusing that they're discriminated. Also, there would need to be strong supervision that the education these children receive at home is of the same quality as the education they would receive in a common school.

Good luck in any case, it won't be easy.

Where I live, home schooling is usually the only way for teenage celebrities like actors and musicians, who often spend their whole day on the road doing shoots or recording songs, or hosting TV shows or guesting in TV shows.

However, athletes here, at least before they turn pro, are mostly in school, since it is in school that they're discovered in the first place.

Wow, The reason maria is so intelligent and i mean extremely intelligent in all fields is because she is home schooled.. Home schooled people are allot more smarter and can apply and solve knowledge much better than normal school students.. but normal school is good aswel.. and is required to keep a social balence.. However i think you need to persue your fight. Good work :)

I'm not sure about my opinion of homeschooling. I think the social background provided in a school is pretty important, but in many circumstances i realise this just is not the best option. Just wondering what your opinion on this is? Good luck anyway, and I'm really pleased Maria provides inspiration in so many ways!!!

Thanks for all your replies.
I can't imagine many French parents abusing the legalization of homeschooling! It is more work to homeschool, so any "bad" parents will probably boot their kids out of the house every morning and send them to school to have some peace!
Regarding rigid regulations. Kids actually love to learn unless they didn't get enough oxygen at birth. My sons had no interest in formal learning, just playing and talking, until age 9, and both read like actors now and speak three languages...
Regarding socialization. Like most homeschoolers my kids are in two sports, active in Church and have neighbor friends. We would actually like to have it a little quieter!
This weekend in Berlin was a busy Junior Tournament. One of my kids had a match until 2 a.m. Saturday. Then he was in the semi and finale on Sunday.
As you can imagine, with all the excitement of a big weekend tournament, my kids slept in Monday morning until 9. Then we studied math and reading comp and economics a few hours.
There is just no room in our busy lives for public school. And I think it's healthier for my little athletes to get sleep when they feel they need it. :bounce:
Anyway, we love our lifestyle and are glad we have an inspirational (homeschooled) role model like Maria Sharapova: a smart, athletic, healthy, successful and charming young lady.

I would have to say that home schooling is a very good idea!

My only objection would be, that when you are at a public school you get to meet so many different people and make very good friends.

I am very happy to hear that Maria is a very good inspiration to you. :)

Home schooling is very good for athletic children, as it gives them a bigger focus point on the sport, and not just doing it once a week in school.

Good luck! :)
