Draw out in two hours.

Draw's out and it sucks big time.

Lindsay has to play C. Martinez first round.

Anyone who gets through the top half deserves to win the tournament.

Almost all the Russians are playing qualifiers!

The only person who has a hard match like Lindsay is Amelie (she faces Sam Stosur in the first round).

Potential matchups for Lindsay are:

4th Round - Sprem
QF - V. Williams
SF - Myskina

The top also has Molik and Dementieva in their half of the draw.

I actually don't think it's too bad. Lindsay beat Conchita 1 and 2 or something the last time they played on hardcourt, even though Lindsay has had problems with her. Sprem can't win a match lately; if Venus gets to the 4th round, she'll lose to Molik (I'd rather Lindsay play Venus than Alicia); and if Myskina gets there (I think Dementieva will beat her), well we'll see...she hasn't been in top shape lately.

I like some of the other match ups like Amelie/Stosur in round 1, Kuzentsova/Sharapova QF, Amelie/Serena QF...

If Lindsay is healthy, she should do very well here ;)

Hmmm I liked Lindsay's draw. She easily beat Conchita last time they palyed, and Conchi is slumping more now than she was then. It's a pretty good draw. I'd guess she'd play Likhovtseva in the 4r. Sprem has been slumping badly. I think she'll play Molik, not Venus, in the QF. Either is fine with me. Venus' form has been very meh in Hong Kong. Myskina or Dementieva in the SF is nice.

I think we were typing our responses to the draw at the same time, and it seems we think VERY alike lol

The top half of the draw is indeed interesting.. IMO i think Davenport(if she even plays; hopefully) and Venus will get to the QF EASILY. Venus' form wasnt good in Hong Kong, but she managed 2 wins against top 10 players, thats all that matters. I dont know, i think Venus may surprise us this year. I think Myskina will get to the SF, but will loss to either Davenport/Williams...

The Bottom half isnt as tough. Two matches that i think will pan out in the QF round; Sharapova vs. Kuznetsova and Williams vs. Mauresmo. Whoever wins the Williams/Mauresmo will get to the final.

All of these predictions WILL change.. I have to see how they play there first matches.. But given the fact that some have tough first matches, some UPSETS are likely.

Sharapova's carrying an injury so she might not even get to the QF *g*

Heck half the field is carrying an injury or cold - so it is going to probably be the last player standing :)

well looking at their recent record, Conchita should be a piece of cake for Lindsay. sprem is playing horrible lately, and i don't even think she'll get to the 4th round, but Lindsay can beat any of the potential 4th round opponents. for the qtrs she can beat Venus or Alica. if venus is playing well then i see her beating alica. I think Lindsay would beat Venus though because shes way too consistent and it seems as though Venus plays great one match and then the next has a million forehand errors. if she plays alicia i think Lindsay will be able to handle her. I'd rather have Lindsay play dementieva in the semis because i think she is intimidated by Lindsay. if myskina makes it that far(which is questionable) she definitely could be a problem for Lindsay.

I like the draw too for Lindsay. I agree Myskina could now be a problem for Lindsay, if Myskina gets that far. Also if Lindsay plays we don't know how fit she is going to be but lets stay positive, she can do this:cool: :worship:

i know lindsays ill, but im sure its more a precaution than major illness. someone can sound like shit and be coughing, but not feel 'under the weather'. i mean look at teh photos on getty images. shes laughing and what not and doesnt look like shit like she did in moscow! Im not saying shes making it up, but im know lindsay would rather feel 100% playing a GS, rather than 60% bcos she played a shitty tier 2!

but woo for her draw. i hope she gets lena in the semis cos she'll flaw her!

LindsayRulez
Jan 14th, 2005, 10:19 AM
I really hope she's okay bc apparently she was sounding very very sick; she said she got tired after a 3 shot rally during the warm-up and was feeling only 30% energy-wise. But I'm sure she's resting up and taking the best medicines!

LindsayRulez
Jan 14th, 2005, 10:20 AM
oh guys, here's a prediction of mine that I'm only posting here so the Venus fans don't jump on me; if Venus and Shuai Peng meet in round 2, Venus will lose. I just saw Peng against Molik and she is really good, Venus better watch out!

gossipcom
Jan 14th, 2005, 11:18 AM
Peng is playing very well at the moment. Molik made a few unforced errors tonight that crept into her game - one thing that was impressive with that match against Peng was her serving and also when broken she immediately broke back.

But as you said Peng if she gets through to the 2nd round she could knock of Venus, if Venus isn't prepared.

I'll say it again but the way Molik is playing on form she is the one to beat in Lindsay's Quarter. Tonight's win was her 30th in 34 matches and she hasn't dropped a set this year so far.

One thing's for sure, if both Lindsay and Alicia both progress through to the 4th Round, Lindsay will have to be on top of her game.

lindsayno1, you can put a certain amount on - but her voice last night was almost completely gone - I think she wanted to make sure her bronchitis didn't turn into laryngitis.

Still not 100% sure if she's still here in Sydney or has already flown to Melbourne - all I know is she isn't participating in the Tennis Day (forum) on Sunday.

hmmmm....im not as confident as u guys. i think its a tough draw and if she is ill then its not looking good. also alot of players are dropping out cos of teh heat...which could benefit lindsay as she is used to hot condiditions. hope she plays tuesday then i can watch it monday nite as no work on tuesday

I love the draw!

Martinez is tough for the first round but only in terms of it being a first round match. Molik or Venus will be in her quarter final and Venus was nearly beaten by Vera and I personally think Molik and Lindsay are hugely similar but Lindsay is better... Molik may have won all her matches in straight sets this year, Gossip, but she hasn't played particularly tough opponents. If Lindsay didn't have bronchitus and was match tough, I'd be pretty confident of this win. Sharapova and Serena I saw as Lindsay's biggest obstacles but she won't meet either of them until the final. Then Dementieva/Myskina for a semi is what I would have wanted, I don't see Lindsay losing 7-6 in the third to Elena.

Peng's serve is far too weak, IMO to beat Venus, she returns really well but I think Venus would be able to break her relatively easily.

Lindsay is ill, and I'm pretty sure she was feeling pretty shitty... hopefully she'll be more than ready for her first match.

Elldee
Jan 14th, 2005, 05:11 PM
If the seeds hold to form the Quarter finals will be amazing!

Dementieva/Myskina - Dementieva is really struggling with Anastacia but Myskina tanks quite frequently, but hopefully that'll be a great three setter.

Lindsay/Molik/Venus - Lindsay and Venus have a great rivalry and always bring it and I think Venus brings the best out in Lindsay. Molik is australian and I'd like Lindsay to really show her that although she's good, she's not that good.

Serena/Amelie - I really felt for Amelie at wimbledon and YEC so hopefully she can rest her demons and Serena is so competitive it should be phenomenal.

Svetlana/Maria - I actually see Maria thrashing Svetlana, but hopefully Svetlana will have recovered from her slump at the end of last year... I can't imagine these two like each other particularly.

These match ups are the ones I would have picked myself.

Designer defends Open courts

THE manufacturer of Melbourne Park's tennis courts has hit back at claims his courts are too slow.

Paul Bull, from AV Syntec, said the Australian Open courts will be the second fastest they have ever been, only slightly slower than 2000 when the players complained they were too fast.

Australian world No.3 Lleyton Hewitt last week blasted Tennis Australia officials for not making the courts faster to favour his fleet-footed game.

But court designer Bull said Hewitt, who has yet to practise on the Melbourne Rebound Ace courts, will find it faster than he may think.

"Lleyton will find it is faster, maybe not as quick as he would like, but it will be quicker," said Bull.

"We made it ultra fast in 2000, and the players complained that it was too quick.

"Lleyton is a fantastic player and so quick around the court, so nothing can be fast enough for him.

"Lleyton would like it a bit quicker like 2000, but when it comes to the Australian Open we have got to look at all the players on tour, we cannot design it for one player.

"Ours is the only surface of all the Grand Slams that enables any player, irrespective of their preferred courts, to play their natural game without making drastic changes to it.

"Tennis Australia asked us to speed it up, not too fast like 2000. That is why we modified the stiffness of the surface."

Rebound Ace, which is laid on a foundation of recycled rubber from car tyres and old shoes, has the ability to be made as fast as grass or as slow as clay.

It all depends on what materials are used to make the surface.

This year, court designers have stiffened the surface, giving the ball extra speed coming onto the racquet.

"What we have done at Melbourne Park is stiffen the top coat a bit more without touching the impact absorption," said Bull.

"This makes it come faster onto the racquet. The optimum level is medium fast in our opinion."

Bull said he wasn't upset over the recent comments about his courts, having endured 17 years of talk about the surface.

Top of the list of misconceptions is that the court is sticky and melts when overheated.

This has since been clinically and naturally proven incorrect through laboratory testing and at courts laid in the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

"All sorts of talk about the courts has happened over the years, things like the stickiness," he said.

"It is not sticky at all. We have tested it ourselves up to temperatures of 70 degrees celsius.

"In the early days when we started to play on Rebound Ace most players used natural grass shoes with heavy tread that gripped onto the surface.

"So when the shoes gripped on the surface they thought the court melted in the sun. They should have been wearing flat-soled shoes.

"The whole idea of making this type of surface is to reduce injuries for the players. It helps reduce injuries and take a lot of the impact out of the sport.

"After five-set matches the players won't feel like they need two hours of physiotherapy for their legs to recover."

It's looking good for Lindsay to score her second Australian Open title

Lindsay's in Melbourne!

My friend dropped off Lindsay, Maria S and the Dominikovic sisters (they were all in the car together) to their respective destinations after the WTA conference, etc. My friend said she was funny - because they all had received new phones from Sony Ericsson and Lindsay couldn't get her battery cover to open because she had no nails *g*

Apparently Lindsay looked better than she did at her press conference a few days ago :)

Here's some pics of her practising:

Well that's great news!

Well, I took a look at the draw on BBC tennis website and at first glance I really liked the look of the draw. She'd away from Amilie and Sharapova who are in the second half and I wasn't worried at all about the conchita first match-up. The only names that worried me a little were Venus (mainly due to history) and Myskina. But there were a few names earlier in the draw that could suprise either of those players mentioned and beat them.

I'm not worried but I'm very excited to see what might happen.....we'll see over the next two weeks what pans out. I've got a friend off to live in Sydney for two years, as of next week end.....so she'll get better coverage than me!

This is why I'm glad that I work evening shifts because it means that I can come in from work and watch all the tennis and sleep during the day - haha ;)

I just feel good that Lindsay's route to the quarters are free from problems [she tore Sprem apart at Wimbledon] and then she will have match practice and feel tantalisingly close to the final. No Sharapova, no Serena, no Amelie - great!

Lindsay seems to be chums with Anastasia and Maria on tour.

I'd say she's more friends with Serena than Anastasia or Maria - apparently Maria didn't say a word to anyone in the car she was in :) and Lindsay was in the car with her *g* either that or Maria was in a not-so-talkative mood ;)

The drivers had to pick up players and in this case it was 4 players they had to pick up which included Lindsay, Maria and the Dominikovic sisters. Lindsay sat next to Evie D - but they were all having way too much fun with their new little phones they had rec'd :)

But out of all the players she's friends with Corina, Lisa and Renee.

Lindsay'll prove them wrong soon enough. It's ridiculous, Lindsay beat Dechy comfortably and played a competitive doubles match in Sydney not to mention her domination of Martinez recently [off of clay] with consistant 6-2 6-1 victories.

The surface is faster than usual and the draw is good... I at least want a final.

I wouldn't be suprised if either Dementieva or Myskina didn't make it to their quarter final where they're supposed to meet, but I think one of them will be in the semi. Myskina seems to always beat Elena though.

I don't think it's wise when Lindsay's shaking off illness to play doubles, but I guess she doesn't want to make Corina's trip a waste... it's a pretty good draw for them as the number 15 seeds.

I was just coming on to the board to say that Lindsay's match would be due on at an "Earthly UK Time" which would be 8.30am.....but then I never thought to check to see when Henman was on.......and it does seem that it might clash with Lindsay's match since he is last on MCA and it's not before 7.30pm Melbourne time! We need to hope that one of the other matches realllllly draaaaaaaags out and then maybe they'll but Henman on court 10 where there are not televised matches!

Looks like we may not see Lindsay live......:tears: :crying2: :sobbing: :hysteric:

thats a plan and a half...no one really wants to see him anyway!!

Yep, Eurosport just said that they're showing Greg at 12.00am and Tim at 8.30 :( I think they'll show highlights at midday of Lindsay/Conchita [two former grandslam winner] as Mauresmo/Stosur is on now. Hope so!

Mauresmo's wearing Lindsay's outfit!

Is he even on a televised court...court 3?

I really like Roddick, he's like 4th on my favourite list, but if this could be Lindz last Aussie Open and her last best chance at it, then Roddick is just going to have to wait till the French to capture a slam. He just hogs to much ESPN!!! I know it's not his fault! Sorry A-Rod, but I have to root for Greg in this one...

I know who went to the tournament yesterday, and they say that Lindsay is looking great. He saw her hitting on an outside court. He says that Lindsay should win the thing barring injury, and is playing better than anyone there, and he's not at all an LD fan.

I think her 0-6 record against Conchita in slams is broken tonight.

You guys must be getting different ESPN coverage than me. At the end of the coverage this morning after Venus/Danilidou they said tomorrow at 2pm ET they were showing Lleyton Vs Arnaud Clement! I mean I'm happy we are getting some Aussie coverage but no offense Lleyton I'd rather be watching Lindsay crush Conchita!

Did anyone else read the article in the latest edition of Tennis magazine about ESPN formally deciding again to sacrifice quality matches for re-runs of crappy American matches again this year? Apparently even all the US fans are up in arms about it!

It's like the Canadian version of ESPN it's TSN but it uses all the feeds from ESPN and ESPN2. I do love Mary carillo but i could live without a couple of the guys, they just drone on and on and on about Roddick and Agassi over and over again! LOL

We are STILL waiting for Rogers to go the the negotiating table with the tennis channel. I mean we get the golf channel, how hard could it be!

I tell you though i really do miss the commentating from back home in Australia. Apart from our stock 2-3 standard ones every year they get guest commentators in for the two weeks. Billie Jean King was a good one and last year they had hingi on the payroll and she was commentating for the whole two weeks. It was really cool!

My email to ESPN:

Today, I went online to check when the match featuring world number one Lindsay Davenport and former world number two Conchita Martinez would be shown. I found that it would be shown at 2:00 pm EST, and at that time I turned on the TV, only to see Lleyton Hewitt playing, with the next match featuring Venus Williams. I have a serious issue with this scheduling. First of all, the Venus Williams match was already shown on the network, which the Davenport match was not. Second, Lindsay Davenport is the world number one. She might not dress like a whore like Serena, or be as marketable as Venus, but Lindsay Davenport is the world number one, who is probably playing her final Australian Open. Yet her opening match is not even shown. I am extremely angry at ESPN, as this is not the first time the scheduling has made no sense. I for one don't wish to watch reruns of Roddick over and over again - simply because he's American. Also, Chris Folwer knows nothing about tennis, at all. Listening to him really makes me want to cry. He knows nothing - not the most obvious facts or recent history of the game - nothing. It makes me sad that ESPN has gotten the rights to three out of the four slams. TNT used to do a much better job with Wimbledon coverage than ESPN has done, and what is even more upsetting is that I know it is only a matter of time before ESPN gets the rights to the US Open, so I'll have to watch Roddick win his second round match five seperate times there too. Bottom line is that you are treating the world number on players like shit. She deserves better that what you're doing to her. I hate this network.

Dear Eurosport,

well the live coverage has finished and you are showing greg rusedski.....who you showed live. after that you are gonna show roddick...who you also showed live. in the you say we play the options are venus, greg(????) and tim<----who you have also shown live. Are you so inapt that you forgot the world number 1 played a match today.....on the main court.....against a difficult opponant...who she dismissed in under an hour and has it not even crossed you mind that there are some people in the uk who....to put it politley....couldnt give a toss about tim fucking henman and the other useless brits!!! This match between 2 ex-wimbledon champions was highley anticipated amongst many tennis fans and it is your job to provide fans with the matchs they want.
I didnt do a 12 hour shift at work and then come home and watch the tennis from midnite till 11.30am for nothing....i want to see the womens number 1,favourite for the tournement,in her farewell tour....not the british number 1 who is incapable of seeing off a lesser oponnant. I am sick and tired of the tennis coverage being aired arund tim/greg...if people wanted to watch greg they would have and set the vidio to record it as he was first on....so why are you showing him again whn the commontater said myskina was going to be shown. You never give fair viewing of lindsay davenport in grandslams when tim is on....couldnt it be possible to use eurosport 2 to show some matches..i am urging you as a desperate lindsay davenport fan to show her match to us..the fans....who wnat to see it. i would appreciate it if you could reply to let us know if you are going to show her so i can get a couple of hours sleep while greg pisses and farts about on court.

Hey Folks!

Reporting from Melbourne.

Can't stay long - just saying I was at Lindsay's match last night and she slowly got into the match - basically she had 13 UE in the first set and only 1 in the 2nd.

Once she turned on the gears in the 2nd set and her first serve started to work (which wasn't working in the first set) she just overpowered Conchita.

She's got doubles this arvo - so I'll probably go and watch that if it's not clashing with Agassi's match :)

ETA: I do have pics I'll upload them tonight when I get to my friend's house to my PB account. Lindsay was wearing Blue!

Well, first of all, it sounds like I should join in with emailing Eurosport. I woke up at 8.30am this morning in the hope that Eurosport may have shown Lindsay but they didn't. fortunately, it wasn't a wasted early morning as I had an appointment, but I stayed home all afternoon, continuely flicking on Eurosport to see if Lindsay was on - but NOOOOOOOOOOOO! I went work at 4.10pm....and didn't get there until 5.20pm because of the darn snow and traffic! So, I didn't see the highlights show......I should have taped it, even for a 4 second stint.

Which address did you send an email to Kelly?

Anyway, secondly, just thought I'd mention that I am watching the score board (although I'm going to bed soon) and I see that Amilie Mauresmo is down 4-0 in the first vs. Safina. I know it isn't Lindsay's half of the draw, but it could be one tricky player gone if she loses....?

Anyway, time for bed said zebadee.....

I'm currently borrowing my friend's computer (Thanks Eden!) to upload the pics to my PB account - unfortunately she's on dial-up so it'll probably take another hour or so to work.

Once it's done just go to my PB account (which is gossipcom - just not before the hour though) and there will be huge in size pics there under Sport - Tennis - 2005 Australian Open (when I get home next week I'll resize them).

Lindsay's 2nd up on MCA today so I'll probably watch her play her 2nd round match.

I watched the doubles match - they lost serve once in the match and that was Corina's first serve - apart from that blemish they played very well dominating most of the points, though Lindsay had a few UEs, her serve was working - she yelped a few times *g* - apart from dropping her serve at the beginning of the match (well 4th game), Corina played brilliantly - some of the shots she was hitting reminded of the times when they won Wimbledon, etc.

In seriousness though, if they want to go for the doubles title they have a good draw - the one thing stopping them would be Black/Huber (they're in their quarter).

I met Corina again - missed Lindsay practising by about 5 mins but since it was boiling hot it's understandable.

The forecast for today is 25 degrees with a possibility of rain, so it could be a stop / start match for Lindsay.

Oh yeah, Lindsay wore hot pink today - definitely my fav out of the three outfits!
Also to answer your question, unless Jon is all of a sudden invisible, he's not here in Melbourne at the moment.

An interview with:

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Lindsay.

Q. Talk about that first set.
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, she played really well. You know, I just wasn't ready to be at my best at the very beginning, and it definitely cost me against someone who came out playing very well, very aggressive and kind of caught me on my back foot.

Q. You weren't really worried at any stage?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I mean, it's our job not to worry. I mean, obviously I don't want to lose and I'm a competitor. So tried to buckle down after I lost the first set and concentrate more in the short term than in the long term.
You know, I knew I wasn't playing my best today, so knew that no matter what, just to try and do my best to get a win and do what I needed to do. And I thought in both the second and third sets, I got off to good leads, and that really helped carry me through both sets.

Q. Did you feel your energy level was a little off today at all?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No.

Q. In 1998, your first year as the world's No. 1, you described yourself as a boring story. You said, "I'm just an ordinary girl playing tennis and being successful, pretty quiet and modest. That's a boring story." Do you still think you're a boring story?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I think those adjectives that you used describe me accurately. So I guess it's up to each person to determine that for themselves.

Q. Have you been involved with any of the tsunami relief interests?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah. I mean, I definitely donated on my own, not through the tour, and have been following it. I know that Nike is doing a give away on Saturday at their store here downtown. I'm going to try to do that, depending on when I play.
It's amazing how much more it seems like we hear about it once I got down here as compared to home in California. It seems like it's been interesting to learn more about it as I've been down closer to where it occurred.

Q. When we talked in California, you had said that you kind of saw the Russians start to come up. You weren't necessarily surprised with how they did last year. Do you have any thoughts on who might come next? Is there a country that seems strong?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: To challenge Russia? It's pretty remarkable how many players that they do have in the Top 15. I don't know if that will be repeated any time soon by another country.
I think the United States, about four or five years ago, had about five in the Top 10, which was pretty remarkable. But it seems like they all have kind of come into their own in the last 12 months, and they've all improved in ranking and they've all improved their game.
I mean, I don't see another country producing that many top, top players any time soon. I think that China's come a long way in producing a bunch of players. While no one in the Top 10 or Top 20 yet, I mean, all of a sudden they've got I think five or six legitimate players in the top at least hundred that are improving rapidly. It seems like tennis has kind of caught on in that part of the world, as well.

Q. Do you think that will be the next wave, China?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It seems like it. I've heard that because of the Olympics next time around, they've put a lot of money into it and are trying to develop these players. It seems to have really helped. I mean, five years ago, I don't remember any player from China. Now we've got, like I said, five or six good ones. I think a doubles team did very maybe the gold medal at the Olympics.

Q. Yes.
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I know they were in the finals. They're improving rapidly.

Q. Do you have any idea why there's such a big gap in the generation following you and Jennifer?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't know. I mean, just seems like it's obvious no one's come up straight to the top. Maybe we were a little spoiled. We had Chanda, Jennifer, myself in one year, and shortly thereafter Venus and Serena, a lot of good players in that group. Players that have come along after us haven't really gone above 20 or 30, if that.
I don't really know exactly what the secret or what the problem is, depending on how you look at it. Hopefully, you know, maybe this year or next year we get some players that start to come up and start to kind of take it over from those of us that are getting older.

Q. Do you know much about Spears?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't.

Q. Is that what it takes? She had a big win today. Is that what it sort of takes for a young player like that to get that first big win?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It seems we have a group of girls that are in that 50 to 100 range, between like Granville, Irvin and Spears and stuff. Besides maybe Meghann Shaughnessy, who struggled in the last year with some injuries, no one's really gone up to the next group. That's really kind of what it takes.
Maybe one of those girls can. I don't know. But it hasn't happened yet.

Q. A different story. An Austrian player, Barbara Schett, the best player we ever had in Austria, ended today her career. What do you think, what could you say about her career? How do you know her as a person?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, I always enjoyed her very much. She always had a great attitude. I mean, she still does. She was a lot of fun off the court.
I thought a really good talent and a great player. The last two years or so, she hasn't done as well as she did when I first in the late '90s. But I always thought she was a lot of fun to talk to, a very good competitor. I mean, she'll definitely be missed, that's for sure. I was sad to see that she was retiring after this tournament.

Q. She said it has to be here. What about you, do you already know when it's finished?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I don't think I heard that towards the end of her match she started crying a little bit. I don't think I want to know or put any pressure on myself like, "This is it." I'll probably just decide afterwards. I think that that would be very emotional for any player to handle, and I certainly know that I couldn't handle knowing that it was my last tournament.

Q. Going back to the issue of young players coming through in America, the fact that you say you haven't got as many. We've got the same issue here in Australia. There's only like four Australians in the second round. Why do you think it is that the South Americans, for instance, are pushing through so many players, and the traditional countries aren't?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, I have no idea. It seems, like I've always said, this is very cyclical. You'll get a few players that come up and do very well, and it seems like they inspire each other and help each other get better. Then it seems like there might be a drought. People were talking about men's tennis for a while. All of a sudden Andy Roddick came up, James, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, and then it seemed like we had a good bunch.
I don't know. I think that a lot of countries try really hard and some years it just doesn't happen. I mean, I think Australia actually is doing pretty well right now. Alicia's probably the best hope that they've had in a very long time, and she's got a good game. Seems like she's probably gotten maybe Sam Stosur to play a little bit better and get some of the elder players to improve a little bit. I didn't know that only four made it to the second round. Maybe Alicia and some of the Australians, seeing her ranking so high and winning tournaments, helps them, inspires them.

Q. Do you think putting a whole lot of money in makes a difference?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Couldn't hurt, but it's not going to be the only factor that probably is going to get a bunch of players through.

Q. Have you played any of these Chinese girls?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No. Excuse me, I did play one in Amelia Island last year, I think Sun, but on clay court. I don't think that's their best surface. But I think that's it.

Okay back again for my daily report!

Again uploading a few pics from Lindsay's match today - and again they're unedited.

I thank God missed the first set - I had just arrived to Melbourne Park and was heading into RLA when I took a squiz at the tv screen and saw she was 4-1 down and literally ran to MCA - along with half the people :) It took me until the end of the first set to actually get into MCA, since it was packed out.

I don't want to harp too much, just want to affirm what Andrew said about her play - first set she played crap, etc the next two she upped the tempo.

My friend drove her from Melbourne Park back to her hotel room after her match this afternoon and said she didn't seem upset *g*

That being said we know what Lindsay's record is at GS' - if she loses a set you can consider her chances of winning the tournament dropping dramatically - due to how she's won the titles before... so all I'll say now is for Lindsay to win the tournament she will have to go against history - but it doesn''t mean that she'll go away without a fight!

She was grabbing at her left thigh today - not sure if there's anything wrong with it though. Her doubles match with Corina is scheduled on Court 7 (3rd match up) - so I should be able to get to it.

I'm hoping she'll be on RLA on Saturday for her 3rd round clash - hopefully not VA - because if she's in there it means I can't watch it!

I think you are right Kelly, she should pull out of doubles, it can be seen as a waste of time and a waste of energy, it rises the risk to have an injury, even if she works with a therapist... Anyway, I just would like het to win this tournament!!!!! GO LINDSAY!!!!!

I think a major problem was that mentally Lindsay wasn't there for the start of the match. You look at Pastikova's numbers, she's ranked #99, has no huge wins, and seems just like your average challenger scrub. Lindsay probably went in thinking it would be an easy day and nothing too difficult would come up. Pastikova catches her off guard, and you see what happened. I believe this is similar to her matches against Mashona Washington at Stanford, or Lilia Osterloh at Cinci. She went on to win titles there. Next round she needs to be ready for Vaidisova. She's got a game like Sharapova, though not nearly as good. If Lindsay is on her game like in the second and third sets, she wins, easily. If not, it could get sticky.

Elldee
Jan 20th, 2005, 08:18 PM
I read a Lindsay quote somewhere that she was familiar with Vaidisova's game and that she knew she'd have to be better from the start against her... so good.

Lindsay will probably just tape her thigh and I'm sure she'll be totally fine.

Well, I had some time to kill before tonights live AO coverage so I sent an email to Eurosport and here's what I put:

"
Dear Eurosport,

Could I first of all thank you for being the only TV/Sports channel to cover the Australian open. I understand that BBC also have the rights to the coverage but chose only to show highlights on a weekend.

I have been a great follower of tennis via Eurosport for the past six years or so and have especially become more or a fan of the WTA tour since the deal you made in or around 2000/2001 to air many WTA events, LIVE!

What I am a little dissapointed about is the lack of coverage you have given to the WTA world number 1, Lindsay Davenport during the opening two rounds at this years Australian open. In fact, as I can tell, you have not shown any of Lindsay's matches. I have seen both of Roger Federer's matches, who is the ATP world number 1!

I have taken into account that Lindsay Davenport's matches have landed on the same day as both Tim Henman's and Greg Rudeski's matches, both of which are British as, after all, it is British Eurosport. Given this allowence, I noticed that not only were both Tim and Greg's second round matches live during the night, but were both repeated in the afternoon as well as Tim's match getting a morning airing from 8.30am!

I know that each of the matches involving the above players were the options for "You Say, We'll Play" but could you have at least given Lindsay Davenport's match an airing during the day regardless? Not all UK people want to see Tim and Greg 3 times each in one day! In fact, many Davenport fans are from the UK - believe it or not.

In the afternoon of Thursday 20/01/2005, this is what you aired: Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman, followed again by Greg's match against Andy Roddick in the "You Say, We'll Play" poll.

It is almost time for the live coverage on Eurosport for the third round as I type this email and I would hope that maybe you show another Brit on your live coverage. I'm sure the British people are greatly interested in Elena Baltacha's forth-coming tie against Silvia Farina-Elia. And I greatly hope that you will give the WTA world number one some air time during her third round tie.

I really appreciate your reading this, and I hope that my comments have been taken into account. So for now, I will greatly look forward to seeing some great tennis over the next week or so.

Thanks again,
Rachel Roberts"

Okay uploading pics from today's doubles match.

They played so-so - Lindsay made some unforced errors which caused her to say "that is embarrassing" a few times :)

They played the 2nd set better than the first that is for sure - we can only hope that the Black doubles combo today is upset so they can avoid them (chances of that happening are very slim).

Lindsay's 2nd up on Vodafone Arena today - my worst nightmare.... you see if you have a RLA ticket you can't go to VA.

So what I'm going to try and do is to exchange my ticket with someone else to get into VA since I want to see her match (because if they play doubles on Sunday) it will be the last time I'll see her in Oz live.

Regarding the doubles match yesterday - early in the first set Lindsay was actually hit pretty hard from a return on her arm - she kept on rubbing it for a while after that - and both her and Corina had a major prob with one of the linespeople who did two dodgy calls, after some arguing and even Adam said it seems as if he's having a bad day maybe he should be replaced - he wasn't but they did get the favourable line calls after that.

That thigh injury I mentioned two days ago didn't seem to bother her at all - I did notice though she had taping (precautionary measure) on her left shoulder under her top (and bra, etc).

So here's hoping a miracle can occur and that she wins on VA in straight sets, since she just doesn't seem to like that venue at all.

5-2. Lindsay really isnt playing well at all. 1st serve % is around 40, although she served 2 good serves, one being an ace, from 30-30 in her previous service game.

I'm impressed with her opponent, her serve and backhand are both very good IMO, her FH is the one letting her down so far. 11 UFE

OK, she wins 6-2 6-4. Nicole didn't play well, far too many UFE.

+'s for Lindsay - Her serve when down in a game, net points won - all but one. Movement - Very good in some points. Break points converted 3-4 75% (i think)

She needs to play much better for Sprem and get her ground game sorted.

Well done Lindsay, through in straights :yeah:

I think a positive of this match is that she was never broken. Clutch serving on the big points.

Andrew.
Jan 22nd, 2005, 05:55 AM
I'm very cautious about the rest of the tournament. Sprem is a player who can go on a roll at any moment. Lindsay has handled her well in their previous two meetings, but I really don't think Lindsay is playing well. She's starting to not look happy again, and if she makes the QF that concerns me. Against Queen Vee, she's been known to tank in the past. At the US Open, Lindsay was playing much better tennis than she is now. Against Alicia, she's developing the "She's so great I can't put a finger on her" that she has for Venus/Serena still and Maria. Concerning. She really needs to pick up her game. She's not playing like a favorite or the #1.

gossipcom
Jan 22nd, 2005, 06:33 AM
Well she's definitely not the favourite for the title - at the moment she's the 3rd favourite (though Alicia is right on her tail) behind S. Williams and Sharapova - it's been the same thing for the last 3 weeks.

I was at the match - the only good thing for Lindsay is she wasn't broken - but she'll definitely have to pick up her game.

The other 4R clash - Molik vs V. Williams is going to be an absolute cracker - i'll be back in Sydney when the 4R matches are on.

L. DAVENPORT/N. Vaidisova

6‑2, 6‑4

Q. Tougher match than you might have expected?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No, not really. I was expecting a tough match in the third round, knew she had done well to get there. No, I was ready for it.

Q. She came out swinging right from the start, didn't she? Didn't show much fear.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Yeah, I mean, she definitely ‑‑ from what I was told, she was a hard‑hitter, had a pretty good hard serve. You know, that's what I was expecting and that's what she did.

I mean, I think she hits some great shots. She made some errors that probably some inexperience played a role in that. But she's so young and obviously has a big game and has many, many years to improve on that.

You know, like I said, I was fully expecting a tough opponent and was able to play well enough to get through it.

Q. Who does she remind you of, if anybody, on the tour?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I mean, that's tough to say. I hate comparing players. I mean, she obviously has big groundstrokes and a big serve, and she's only 15. So she has a very big future. We have a lot of players that play that way.

But I think she'll, you know, strive to make a name for herself.

Q. I think you have a good future.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You do (smiling)?

Q. Yes. I didn't think so at Wimbledon last year, but it suddenly changed. I wasn't looking for your future. This is very pleasant.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Thank you.

Q. Is it pleasant for you?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: It is. The turn of events in the last six months took no one more by shock than myself. I was fully ready to see the twilight of my career. But, you know, something definitely changed last summer and I started playing at a very high level, and it started becoming really exciting again and very interesting. And I felt like I really had a chance to do some great things.

I'm excited I'm back here. I was definitely not sure last year. And now that I'm here, I plan to, you know, do my best to try and win another Grand Slam. Have made plans to be committed throughout the whole year. We'll see what happens.

Q. Is it a surprise to you?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, not necessarily on this date. But the last few months, yes. I mean, I wouldn't have thought, you know, midyear last year that I would be here, no less the No. 1 seed, be playing good tennis again. In that way, it is a surprise.

Q. What do you think about the possible return of Martina Hingis?

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think it's interesting. I'll be following it like everybody else. I think she's picked probably a good tournament to start off in, I think it's a Tier IV tournament where she'll be playing opponents that she's got a great chance against. I was always really saddened and disappointed when she stopped so young and so early. I've always had a good rivalry and a good friendship with her. I'd like nothing more than to see her back, playing at the top and being competitive out here.

Q. Is it always fun to beat up on a little kid? She's not so little, but you're giving away a lot of years.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I think when you do this job and you're out here, age doesn't matter. We have obviously Martina Navratilova at I believe 47, 48, somewhere around there, and Nicole at 15. But you can't think of it in terms of age. We're not obviously in the juniors or in high school where a couple years makes a difference. If you choose to play out here, this is what you've chosen. For me it's more about the game and what kind of game the person brings and how good they are. That's more what I concentrate on than how old they are.

Kelly

I guess another way to look at it is that both Sprem and her potential QF opponents whoever they may be are error prone. I do feel Lindsay will pick it up. Hopefully she's just taking it slow now. ;)

Also, Cara and Huber were upset in the doubles today in three sets. Lindsay and Corina play Eva Birnerova/Andreea Vanc today. That's a very winnable match, and now there is only one seeded team left in the bottom half other than Lindsay and Corina. Talk about a great draw.

I'm getting slightly worried if I'm honest. Lindsay really needs to step her game up from now on, if Sprem comes out firing, Lindsay wont be able to do anything the way she played yesterday. I really hope she can find her best form now. If she is to progress and play Venus, it is going to be a tough match - tougher than if she is to play Molik. Both Williams sisters are looking good so far

Loved this part of the interview:

"Have made plans to be committed throughout the whole year. We'll see what happens."

Always good to know she's already made a full year scheduel!

As for the match - I must send a "thank you" email to Eurosport for showing Lindsay's match! I was very nervous and a little worried in the first 3 games of the match. I'd never seen Nicole before and she impressed me greatly! Lindsay's 1st serve % was very low in the first few games and picked up slightly in the second set.

I was pleased that she was able to rely on her serve when she was in trouble ie. BP's down. Lindsay did lose her serve which was very reassuring!

I do think that sometimes Lindsay plays better against players that she knows and has played many times before. For example, she has played Venus many times before and now seens to know her weeknesses and will use that knowledge. Lindsay just did what she needed to do in that match, and as Jo Durie said at the end of the match on Eurosport, "I really think that Lindsay had at least another two gears to go into if need be." I think, for once, Jo Durie was right!

Hopefully, Eurosport will continue to show Lindsay's matches now that Henman is out. I might send another polite email encouraging them to do so ;)

Bye for now - here's to the 4th round vs Sprem! Go Lindsay, in singles and doubles :woohoo:

Corina and Lindsay won't be playing Black/Huber in the third round as the last of the top three seeds go out, so the title might be theres [or at least a QF or SF].

awesome news :D they play tonight :bounce: :bounce:

Sprem defeated Elena with a break in each set [6-4 6-3 of the other way round] and Elena served 11 double faults and had over 30 errors... I'm not overly worried.

Hopefully Lindsay will step up the gears against Alicia/Molik, but Lindsay says herself that she's not where she wants to be or where she was at the US, but hopefully it'll be better.

Im concerned for her! im glad shes playing sprem cos shes my second fave, but think lindsay can beat her! lindsay needs stop tripping over her bottom lip though and start looking happy again! I dont know whats the matter with her! :(

Okay back in Sydney :) So I'll start working on fixing those pics up now *G*

Seriously if Lindsay won the doubles and not the singles I would be absolutely ecstatic - because that is the one title that has been missing from her mantle piece for many years :)

She's 2nd up on VA tomorrow *grrr* - so I'm hoping Fox Sports will be showing the match instead....

Also regarding the doubles, all the major seeds from the bottom half have now been eliminated since Dementieva/Sugiyama last today - the top half however still has some major floaters - so if they can get through to the SF or Final - it'll make it very interesting.

What is even more intriguing is 4 of the players still left in the Singles draw are in doubles (Kuznetsova, Molik, Myskina, Davenport , so you might find some w/o, etc - and that could include Lindsay since (if she touch wood wins tomorrow) she'll have to player her QF matches on the same day - that's if Alicia doesn't win against Venus - if she wins - I'll guarantee that the QF match will be shifted to the Wednesday instead. Still they'd all be playing two matches on the same day.

ETA: In today's match Corina was the person who was broken - at the Open you can do a play-by-play summary :)

I would love to see Lindsay win either as if she wins the doubles, she will have completed a slam. Ideally though it would be fantastic if she won the singles here:)

Good luck Lindsay:bounce:

I'm feeling much better about Lindsay's chances now. It seems from her doubles performance that she's slowly improving while everyone else in the field is reverting. Serena had a deathly match against Nadja last night, Mauresmo has looked like crap the entire tournament, Venus is Venus, Kuznetsova has loked very streaky, and Sharapova looked awful last night against Farina Elia. Now is the time. Go one court. Pound aces like Pimpim. Destroy anything that comes your way. Win matches. Simple gameplan.

Davenport will defend her title

http://www.fbnewsleader.com/content/articles/2005/01/22/sports/03tennis.jpg
Lindsay Davenport, the world's No. 1 player, has committed to play in the 2005 Bausch & Lomb Championships. With speculation mounting that 2005 may very well be Davenport's last professional season, her commitment is even more significant to North Florida tennis fans.

Scheduled for April 4-10, the 2005 Bausch & Lomb Championships, returns for its 26th year to the Amelia Island Plantation. Having recently renewed its position as title sponsor, global eye health company, Bausch & Lomb, returns for its 19th consecutive year, solidifying its commitment to professional women's tennis.

"Lindsay has had great success at Amelia, having won the title twice. Considering that 2005 may very well be her last year playing on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, we are thrilled to have her headline the field as well as provide fans with the opportunity to experience what appears to be their last chance to see one the greatest players in the game of women's tennis," tournament director John Arrix said.

The three-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medalist returns as the tournament's defending champion. She captured the 2004 Bausch & Lomb Championships crown by defeating Amelie Mauresmo in straight sets. Davenport's 2004 win was her second Amelia Island title. She won both the singles and doubles trophies in 1997.

Davenport owns 45 singles and 35 doubles career titles; only Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova have won at least that many in both singles and doubles.

In salute of Davenport's many accomplishments, the tournament will give away a Lindsay Davenport bobblehead doll to the first 3,000 fans to attend the tournament's April 8 night session. The night session gates open at 6 p.m. with two quarterfinal matches played on Stadium Court beginning at 7 p.m.

YES she's returning to Amelia Island!! Too bad I bought a bobblehead on ebay when I can just get one there, but then I'll just have to have 2. I'm so excited, I didn't think she'd play too many clay court events, if any! And she's playing Fed Cup in Florida....I better start saving some money!

Andrew.
Jan 23rd, 2005, 03:28 PM
I still really don't think she'll play many clay court events. Probably just this and Charleston. I'm thinking we might be conveniently "injured" when Roland Garros comes around.

Lindsay just won 6/2 6/2

I told you she hates playing on Vodafone Arena - you have to see the place to understand why players loathe playing there - it's okay if it's raining and the roof's shut but it's when it isn't that causes so much crap for the players with the sun, etc.

Her next match is guaranteed on RLA - if Alicia gets through it'll be played on Australia Day.

If Venus wins it'll be more likely played tomorrow (with the crowd on Lindsay's side).

The good thing is after she dropped her service game in the 2nd set she rallied off 6 consecutive games - will be interesting to see what she has to say in her press conference.

Oh yeah, I might be wrong, but I think I saw Jon sitting next to Adam *g*

Andrew.
Jan 24th, 2005, 03:10 AM
Overall, much much better from Lindsay. Her groundies were working, she had a +11 differential. She had a good number of aces. If she could get the first serve % up there, we'd be sailing right now. I like her chances against both Molik and Venus. But you never know. Lindsay's been so streaky this tournament.

gossipcom
Jan 24th, 2005, 03:13 AM
Dementieva just lost to Schynder so the bottom quarter of the top half has opened up again - Lindsay needs to improve big time though for the next match to get through to the SF. (If Mauresmo wins the tournament she'll get no 1 if Lindsay gets knocked out before the SF - so again we have to have our fingers crossed that Serena can knock her off in the QFs).

ETA: Now that she's safely through to the Quarters, I'll fix those pics up tonight.

Looking on the bright side for Lindsay is she won't have to play singles at VA anymore - her QF match will be at RLA - though that QF Doubles match may not be.

Dechy has upset Mysknia in straight sets. Lindsay better make this damn final.

gossipcom
Jan 24th, 2005, 04:33 AM
I think it's safe to say whoever wins the QF match between Davenport/ Molik or V. Williams will get through to the final.

That being said Patty S does like causing havoc for all those opponents so I'm hoping Dechy can knock her out *g*

Andrew.
Jan 24th, 2005, 04:37 AM
Patty causes Lindsay trouble on clay, and even then Lindsay has whooped her a few times. Patty also beat Linday in Zurich, but that was a total choke by Lindsay in the final.

I don't care how Lindsay plays right now. She's #1. The highest player left on her side is #9. Win. No excuses.

gossipcom
Jan 24th, 2005, 04:53 AM
I know there shouldn't be any excuses - heck if any of the top players are off their game at the moment they'll get beaten - just have to look at Dementieva and Myskina today.

Apart from first serve %, those are nice stats. The winning % on first serve is what really sticks out as something good. More aces than doubles, great winner/unforced errors ratio. Very nice up at net. Get more first serves in, and we're golden.

At times it felt like that first serve percentage was lower than 53% by miles.

Davenport, who won the last of her three major titles five years ago at Melbourne Park, defeated Karolina Sprem 6-2, 6-2 in an hour. The 28-year-old Davenport, who won a tour-leading seven titles last year, is seeking to become the sixth U.S. winner in seven years and may face Venus Williams next.

Improving

``Today was a big improvement from my last matches,'' Davenport said at a news conference. ``That's a good sign. I wasn't expecting to be flawless the first few matches.''

I freaked out for a sec I thought Lindsay and Corina had withdrawn from their doubles match but then I saw them listed as first up on MCA - so they've got a nice morning match with Lindsay's singles match most likely in the day session on the Wednesday - so if they win their doubles tomorrow it means their SF match would be on Wednesday or Thursday (either way it would be a two matches for Lindsay in a day - if they get through tomorrow).
