Over the years, the Hopman Cup has attracted the biggest names in international tennis, but here are some of the names that have missed out on playing this event:

* Perhaps the largest name of all: Anna Kournikova. She was slated to make an appearance in 2000, but organizers were unable to find her a partner. Kafelnikov and Safin were both committed to Doha. Anna was again asked to play in 2001, but declined when she found out that the tournament was being played indoors instead of outdoors like at the Australian Open. She was replaced by Elena Likhovtseva.

* Gabriela Sabatini: The Hopman Cup had a Pepsi sponsorship in 1995 and had requested for the participation of their spokeswoman, Gabriela Sabatini, to compete. Sadly, she declined because the tournament did not fit in with her schedule.

* Martina Navratilova: She didn't come back down to Australia after 1989, so it was a wee bit too difficult to persuade Martina to disrupt her routine for the sake of one tournament.

* Pete Sampras: Pete had originally intended to play the 1991 event with Zina Garrison, after a momentous 1990, where he captured the US Open crown, his first Grand Slam title. Sadly, shin splints put an end to his plans and he was replaced by the more-than-able and willing David Wheaton, the Grand Slam Cup champion. The USA went all the way to the final that year before losing to powerhouse Monica Seles and Yugoslavia.

* Jennifer Capriati: There's still time yet for Jennifer to play the Hopman Cup, but she hasn't. Paul MacNamee was her former coach and she was invited to contest the 1994 tournament with John McEnroe. Sadly, Jennifer was going through a rough period at the time and had taken a sabbatical from the game. She was replaced by Mary Joe Fernandez. John McEnroe would also later pull out due to injury and be replaced by Ivan Lendl.

* Jim Courier: Big Jimbo has always favoured playing Adelaide to the Hopman Cup. He was never asked when he was World No. 1 and overlooked thereafter because of his commitment to the Adelaide tournament.

* Stefan Edberg: Old Eddie was never asked to play the tournament, overlooked in favour of Mikael Pernfors, Peter Lundgren and Mats Wilander.

* Anne Minter: So she wasn't a huge name internationally, but she was or had been Australia's No. 1 player for a long period. She was overlooked in favour of Hana Mandlikova for the first couple of years the tournament was staged and was then subsequently overshadowed by former Perth local, Liz Smylie, Rachel McQuillan and Nicole Bradtke (nee Provis).

* Michael Chang: Not really much of a doubles player was probably what kept him out of this tournament, plus the fact that he never started his year in the first week of the year and probably preferred to be at home with family around Christmas and New Year.

* Andre Agassi: Same reasons as Michael Chang.

Louise Plemming is hot :P Seriously tho,I think the Oz Open should hire her for commentating duties there as I think she does a great job every year.

I had to LOL @ Louise Pleming on TV today. She was drooling all over James Blake. All this time, I thought she was gay! :lol:

Michaella Krajicek obviously looks a little bit like her brother Richard, but I also think she looks a bit like Tatiana Golovin.

I almost literally ran into Dominik Hrbaty on Wednesday night. I was coming out of the hospitality rooms and went to use the lift to go down, but it took so long that I decided to use the stairs. As I headed for the stairs, I almost walked into Dominik Hrbaty. I didn't realize it was him at first, so I said nothing and just politely excused myself. When I looked back at him, I realized that it was indeed Dominik Hrbaty, lugging a huge Head bag around. He doesn't even use Head equipment, so I wondered why he was carrying a Head bag. I regret not at least saying hello to him and introducing myself. He was the player I most wanted to meet this year. Bugger! He didn't look like he was in a hurry either. He was just kinda loping around slowly looking around for someone or something on the third floor of the Dome. His profile lists him as being 182cm tall, but I think he's a bit taller than that. He must be at least 6' 2" rather than just 6' 0". Oh, Dominik, come back! Lol.

On the same night, I sat two rows back from Ernie Dingo, the television presenter. Aussies will know who he is. I also saw Scott Fisher, the former Perth Wildcat basketball player, now Wildcat coach. Perth people will know who he is.

Some speculations on next year's tournament:

I think Germany will be invited back. Tommy Haas was so unlucky to get injured. I have a feeling that he and Anna-Lena Groenefeld will be invited back to make amends for this years' aborted effort.

I think Russia might not get a return invite after their dismal effort, at least not as the current combination of Myskina and Safin. Paul MacNamee was keen for Maria Sharapova this year but Anastasia was offered a place first and she took it. I think Marat might get another invitation because he's the only good Russian male and one of the most popular players in Australia, but who his partner will be is anyone's guess.

Argentina and Slovak Republic will definitely get another invitation with the same outfits as this year. However, I have a feeling that Gisela Dulko may not want to come back. Players are so superstitious. If they play badly in a city, they tend to skip it the following year. But if they are winning, then they LURVE the city.

Francesca Schiavone LURVES Hopman Cup. Her 6:1 singles win-loss record speaks for itself. She has beaten Eleni Daniilidou, Kim Clijsters, Monica Seles, Virginie Razzano, Gisela Dulko and Anna-Lena Groenefeld at this event. I'm not sure if she will be back since her partner Davide Sanguinetti looks like he has terminal cancer every time he walks onto a tennis court. He used to be a fatty as a child and now he's dieted to the point of almost being too skinny to be an athlete. Francesca has bigger muscles than him! I suppose she could have Filippo Volandri or Potito Starace as her partner. I call Francesca the "Funky Frankie Fungoola!" I LURVE Francesca! :D

James Blake also LURVES the Hopman Cup and Perth, but how many times will can they ask him if he's not the top American player every year. Andy Roddick wants appearance money to play and Mardy Fish was nominated once, but James has been brought back twice because he was the defending champion. Will they try Taylor Dent next year, or Mardy Fish, or even Jan-Michael Gambill again? The female partner could be interesting. Forget Lindsay Davenport - she might be retiring. Will Serena Williams come back to defend the title she never got the chance to defend? Will a fit Jennifer Capriati finally make her debut? The last time she was considered was 1994 when she suddenly went off the rails and had to pull out. Then there's Venus Williams, perhaps already hearing good things about Perth from sister Serena. Monica Seles, if she's not retiring? Chanda Rubin, if she's not retiring? Otherwise, it's back to Meghann Shaughnessy again. Or will they bank on Martina Navratilova?

Anyone want some gossip? I think chair umpires Sandra de Jenkin and Carlos Ramos might be an item. I saw them sitting together. Sandra was almost in Carlos' lap and they held hands for a brief moment. Well, um, perhaps because she fell on him, but how much more obvious does she want to make herself. Wake up, Carlos! She's giving you signals!

Is Andreas Egli gay? I wonder sometimes. He's Swiss, no? No, that doesn't make him gay. I was just wondering. It's just the way he looks at the male players and how much more he enjoys watching women's tennis. Does that sound familiar to anyone (or everyone) on this board? Andreas has attended every match of every session whereas Carlos and Sandra have taken breaks and spent time at the hotel relaxing. I remember the first time I saw Andreas on TV, he had a tight, little body, and was looking like a club kid with his frosted-tipped spiky hair. Now that he's packed on some pounds, he doesn't look quite so cute, but I reckon if he worked out a bit, he'd be back to full-blown hottie status in no time. Lol.

I wonder how these chair umpires manage to stay awake for the whole tournament? I used to attend every session and I nearly fell asleep watching in the stands, but these umpires have to be alert and concentrated all the time.

Where is John Blom this year!? Wayne McKewen? Leanne White? Jane Harvey? They used to come every year. Leanne replaced Jane, and then last year, Sandra replaced Leanne. I like the inclusion of Andreas and Carlos too. Now no one can accuse anyone of favourtism. Remember when Barbara Schett accused Leanne White of favouring Jelena Dokic? She got an ITF warning and was subsequently never invited back to play Hopman Cup. Lol. Andreas is Swiss, Carlos is Portugese and Sandra is French. No France, Switzerland or Portugal in the Hopman Cup this year. But I have to say, John Blom was a very popular chair umpire and had his own fanbase in Perth. He loved it too.

For the last two years, Perth has had Enric Molina chair umpiring. Now, that was a hottie - a Latino heartthrob. He picked up some local colloquialisms while he was here, such as adding the word "mate" to the end of every sentence. It was so cute when he had that spat with Mark Philippoussis last year at Wimbledon and he threw in the word, "mate" after every sentence. That was hot. The tennis players are fine to look at, but the chair umpires are more approachable because they are just normal people doing a job. And yes, some of them are hot. We need more hotties.

So how often does Dominik Hrbaty masturbate? I'd estimate that he does it for relief after he loses in a tournament, but otherwise once a day when he's not playing, and always before he has a shower at the end of a hard day's training. Lol. Where is this going? I dunno sometimes. Although, the image in my head of Dominik going at himself is pretty hot. Imagine the look on his face when he orgasms. I'll bet it's hot too. He seems like such a serious person away from the court, and a bit of a loner too. That's hot. Did I mention that I think he's hot? ;)

On the other hand (no pun intended), I don't think Marat Safin pulls himself enough. He doesn't look like someone who does it very often anyway. I don't know why.

As for next year I really hope they invite James Blake back. He looks like the one who enjoys the tournament the most, and always plays his best here. But I'm afraid now that he hasnt won, there are many US players ahead of him who would like a crack at it.

Lol. I don't know. It was mentioned in the Aussie forum about gay players. I only read the first coupla pages, so I don't know if that "rumour" was rebuffed. I think nearly every female Aussie player was listed in that thread anyway. It was such a funny thread.

Yeah, James DOES indeed seem to have the most fun out of all the players and it's great to have him. I think asking Andy Roddick to play is just a formality, being the top US men's player. Since he would normally demand a huge appearance fee and then get turned down, the organizers then have free reign over their selection. I reckon if James really wants to play, and let's face it, he's more popular in Perth than say someone like Mardy Fish is internationally, then he'll play. The only possible worthy selection over James is Taylor Dent. He's the only American male player other than Andy and James (in Perth, anyway) who could attract a lot of media attention. However, Taylor is doing well in Adelaide and may choose to defend those points rather than play for USA in Perth. (Not everyone is like Dominik Hrbaty, who will choose nationality over ranking points) So that leaves James Blake to take up the call again for the USA. Whaddya reckon?

Cool, I've been a fan of his for ages too! That's why I so regret not at least saying hi and introducing myself. All I had to say was, "You're Dominik Hrbaty, aren't you?" and the conversation would've started naturally. Once he confirmed his identity, I'd then introduce myself and tell him that I'm a huge fan of his and that I enjoy watching his tennis. That's what I would've said if I'd realized it was him in time. He just looked so normal and insignificant at the time. He wasn't wearing his tennis clothes and he seemed to be following his nose. He was headed towards the buffet suites. Free food! Yeah, I reckon he was just hungry. It was dinner time after all. Haha. He has this expression on his face that looks like he's scared. Manuela Maleeva had the same expression on her face whenever she was playing.

Funny story: After the presentation ceremony, Dominik invited a bunch of Slovak fans sitting in one corner to come onto the court with their flags to take a photo with him and Daniela with the trophy. There was only six of them in the group, but then a swarm of hangers-on decided they were part of that group and walked on court with them. They were freakin' drunk Aussie guys and a young kid with his face painted in Slovak colours. The fans that Dominik wanted were Slovakian. I sat behind them. They were so cool. I could understand some of what they were saying because I was learning Slovak to converse with a Slovak girl at the club. I'm her "sort-of" interpreter (never mind that I didn't speak Slovak) and hitting partner. Anyway, I was surprised that none of them were frisked by the security guards because I certainly wouldn't let any shady characters onto the court without checking them. Any one of them could've had a concealed weapon in their pocket or in their shoes. There are no security checks coming into the building either. Yeah, so they swarmed and suddenly a group of six turned into 24. I guess Dominik couldn't be stuffed to turn them all away since he had just won the tournament.

Oh, how could I forget, I crossed paths with Louise Pleming today! She is so gorgeous in person. Let me tell ya. I was coming out from the hospitality suites (stuffed with a gut full of goodies) and she was just going in to have her lunch. Oh, the lunch was beautiful. Anything you ever wanted. They had carved turkey with a fruity seasoning and gravy, cannelloni, chicken schnitzel, king prawns, basmati rice, curried chicken, sweet & sour beef, potato salad, seafood salad, garden salad, gourmet sandwiches, gourmet rolls, fruit platters, cheese platters, bread rolls, cheesecakes, chocolate cakes, pastries, coffee, tea, beers, wines, soft drinks and bottled water.

Um, back to Louise. Yeah, so she's gorgeous. Lol. She had on this denim jacket over a black T-shirt with some sparkly thing in the middle that I couldn't quite make out. I saw her wearing that same outfit on Wednesday night as well. She may not be gay, but she's a fashion tragic who was seen in the same outfit twice. Oh, the horror! ;)

Lastly today (Saturday), I sat next to MATTHEW PAVLICH from the Fremantle Dockers!!! I guess only Aussies (or maybe even just West Aussies) would know who I'm talking about. He's a talented AFL player from an improving AFL side. I did speak to him briefly but there was no real depth to the conversation at all. It was basically hi, how ya doin' and then he asked me what I did. Blah-blah-blah, usual stuff. He did mention that he was mainly there to feel a winning atmosphere. He wanted to feel that chill on the back of your neck when you triumph in a team sport. I suppose he coulda chosen any other team sport to witness but he plays tennis occasionally and was a guest of the Burswood Resort like I was. Hence, the free food and drinks. He didn't eat any though. He stuck to a vegetarian pita roll and Solo drink for him and his girlfriend which he had to pay almost fourteen bucks for. Rip-off!

The thing that stood out most for me was that he was a bit "too brown". It was like he went to a tanning salon and was accidentally overbaked. Everything was brown except his feet. I checked as I went in and out of my seat during breaks and stuff. Each time, he kept trying to read what my shirt said, so it was only fair that I got to check him out too. Lol. For the record, my shirt said: "Always wear when hot" in graffiti writing over a broken brick-like pattern on a smattered grey background. I like the shirt. It's a T-shirt with a collar but without buttons or a zip.

What was I saying? Oh, yeah, he was really cool. And only one kid had the guts to ask him for an autograph. The kid was so cute. He wanted signatures from tennis players but only got Matthew Pavlich's. He was still proud though and showed it off to his granddad. Oh, it was so cute.

As for the American Team, I believe they should give the opportunity and invite the highest ranked player on both sides. No disrespect to Meghann but hopefully one of the top American women will accept and they'll have a decent shot a winning the damn thing.

The Americans are the most winningest nation in Hopman Cup history. Do they really need anymore, GoSandrine? ;)

1997: Justin Gimelstob, Chanda Rubin;
2003: James Blake, Serena Williams;
2004: James Blake, Lindsay Davenport.

Spain has two...

1990: Emilio Sanchez, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario;
2002: Tommy Robredo, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.

Switzerland has two...

1992: Jakob Hlasek, Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere;
2001: Roger Federer, Martina Hingis.

Germany has two...

1993: Michael Stich, Steffi Graf;
1995: Boris Becker, Anke Huber.

Slovak Republic has two...

1998: Karol Kucera, Karina Habsudova;
2005: Dominik Hrbaty, Daniela Hantuchova.

I wonder if any of those countries will be able to tie the USA with the most wins.

Surprisingly, France has never won a Hopman Cup. The closest they came was in 1998 when Mary Pierce and Cedric Pioline teamed up and lost in the final to the qualifiers, Slovak Republic.

A special note should be made of Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic. Miloslav Mecir was Slovakian, so it would be awkward to count the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia as being the same country.

The USA have made 7 finals appearances, winning 3.

The Spaniards have made 3 finals appearances, winning 2.
The Swiss have made 3 finals appearances, winning 2.
The Slovaks have made 3 finals appearances, winning 2.
The Germans have made 3 finals appearances, winning 2.

The Aussies have made 3 finals appearances, winning 1.
The South Africans have made 2 finals appearances, winning 1.
The Czechoslovakians have made 2 finals appearances, winning 1.

1 championship each to Yugoslavia, Czech Republic and Croatia on their one and only finals visit.

Finalist nations without a championship include Thailand, France, Argentina, Ukraine and Sweden.

It's interesting to note that the small countries like Switzerland and Slovakia have done so well in this event.

Happy birthday today (Sunday 9th January) to Michaella Krajicek. She turns sweet 16. The ABC crew gave her a plush koala toy as a gift. The onus has been put on her dad by Fred Stolle to get her something even greater.

It was also Dominik Hrbaty's birthday on Tuesday 4th January. He turned 27. He went deep-sea fishing to try and catch his birthday dinner. He didn't catch anything. The ABC crew gave him chocolate Macadamia nuts. He hasn't celebrated his birthday at home for 10 years. So he's missed his 18th, 21st and 25th milestones. :sad:

In 2001, during the night session on his birthday, the Perth fans inside the Burswood Dome serenaded Dominik with a rendition of "Happy Birthday," complete with a birthday cake and an akubra hat as a gift. It was such a touching thing to do.

It was mentioned in todays newspaper that the tournament organizers are trying to lure Roger Federer back to Perth again. They tried to do that this year, but couldn't find him a suitable female partner. Patty Schnyder chose to play Gold Coast.

The big talk is that if Martina Hingis' return in Pattaya City goes well, that she might be asked to be his partner at next year's Hopman Cup. Martina hasn't been back to Perth since winning in 2001. She retired a little over a year later.

On the other hand (no pun intended), I don't think Marat Safin pulls himself enough. He doesn't look like someone who does it very often anyway. I don't know why.

I don't know how often about Dominik, but I can tell you that Mika Llodra need two times a day :)

And did you get to talk to Louise?

No way. When she looked at me, she had this suspicious expression on her face that said, "stop smirking at me!" Suddenly, I had visions of Anita from 'Big Brother' going ballistic at Blair for allegedly smirking at her. I left Louise well alone (just in case), and since I was actually headed for the toilet in the first place, I needed to go in even more of a hurry. Lol.

For the record, I was bad-repped twice for this thread! I guess some people don't have a sense of humour and poor impulse control because if they had any impulse control, they wouldn't be clicking onto a thread with such a lewd title. You can probably guess who gave me one of the bad reps. I think it needs to fuck off and die.

Oh, that's cool! How do you know him? :)

So Lloddy's doin' it two times a day, huh? Remind me not to shake hands with him if I ever have the chance to meet him. ;) (I've read that 1 in 11 people that you shake hands with will have masturbated recently and not washed their hands. Ick, but somehow... hot. Okay, we need to put that word to rest now. Lol.)

Purple_Llama, in that thread over in GM, AUSBOY said that Louise was definitely gay. Is he full of crap or does he really know? :confused: I don't know anymore. Not that her sexuality is important to me. I just want to get my facts, um, straight, before I go spreading rumours like the little bitchy, um, "facthound" that I am. Not that I want to be a bitch to Louise coz, um, she could hurt me really badly if she wanted to.

I was engaged with him for 1 year and a half (but he was not one of the 500 best players of the world lol), so I know a lot of things about him :kiss:

Yeah someone (video someone) said that they had hit up with her & she had indeed dated Martinzed for awhile in another thread so I guess perhaps shes bi sexual as I remember reading an article from about 8 years ago when she was dating an Aussie actor (male)
Thanks for the goss tho :)

Hey, that's cool, Jessi. :D You will be very well-received on these boards if you have an insider's point-of-view on how a player's mind works. Please keep sharing your thoughts with us and welcome to posting on WTAWorld. You'll find that most people on here are very nice.

If I'm not being too forward here, would you mind sharing your story on how you and Michael met? I'm sure that plenty of readers will be interested in your story. We're all a bunch of "facthounds" here. ;)

Yeah, that would probably be tennisvideo (I think his name is Craig or something). Interesting. Thanks for clarifying. I do remember someone alluding to the fact that she had dated an Aussie actor somewhere in the Aussie forum. But I also remembered the Martinez dating rumour. She certainly leads a mysterious, yet colourful life, does our Louise.
