That's 9 am Australian time, and don't matches not begin until 10 or 11? We'll probably be treated to the tape delayed Roddick matches, for the tenth time.

I'm pretty sure we'll see many more players other than the americans. What with Hewitt playing strong, Safin (ok don't count Hopman Cup) and others, as well as all the russians on the women's side. At least I hope.:o

They dont show Danka is the sad thing. Networks tend to not show sub-top 30 players unless they're playing a top seed.

Coverage is only a couple of hours of days. In Tennis magazine it said they will still show Americans but show Roger,Myskina,Sveta, and Sharapova sometimes because they are the real deal. So there is some hope of not all Americans.

yes the tennis week article (or tennis mag?) didn't seem to be very encouraging lol. it sounded like espn was using ratings as evidence that tape delaying matches is the way to do it

yep, that was tennis mag...

the one good thing is that it is anticipated that there will be a lot more coverage of Russian girls matches :bounce:

yep... they cited the taped version of serena vs jenn at the french open being the highest rated part of the fortnight as the reason why live tennis isn't always the way to go.

now just imagine how high those ratings could have been if they showed the damn jenn vs serena match live.
you tend to be able to keep people when you come back from commercial and can say "now here's jenn and serena live". some ppl might be dumb enough to not notice when somethings not live considering that when it is live, a big deal is made out of it.

I'll praise ESPN the day they stop showing 3-4 hour blocks of World Series Poker, while tennis scores flash on the marquee at the bottom.

Well, the time has arrived! Now they can show 3-4 hour blocks of "Tilt," ESPN's new dramatic series. It's about... hmmm... poker. :(

Nevermind.

Maybe another bio-pic about the next NASCAR driver who dies on the track?

Yes it is true that ESPN is adding more coverage hours, but so did USA Network and TNT. What it comes down to is quality and the level to which they are willing to offer the full effect of the tournament for fans...which includes covering matches from as many players as possible (which includes showing "new" in progress matches, rather than replaying matches already shown) and live coverage. USA and TNT were so much better with this, and I just don't see ESPN changing their patriotic-let's just show Agassi, Roddick, Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Capriati, Roddick, Roddick, Roddick, Agassi ways. Why do I think this? Because ESPN said so themselves in Tennis Magazine. They know the die-hard fans want variety, but ESPN doesn't really give a crap what we think. Ratings outdue quality anyday.

Also, no one's mentioned that the men's final won't even be shown live this year. Granted, it's because the tournament moved it back later in the day and, if ESPN aired it live, it'd be on at 3am on the East coast (it'll air at noon, I think, the next day). Sure, that's a tough time to program and attract viewers... but, come on, what else are they going to show at 3am? They re-run every other match, why not the men's final, too?

if a croat's in the men's final, i'd wake up at 3 am to watch it...

that was my thought too. its great that ratings were so high for the taped version, but it's really not evidence of much since nobody knows how high they could have been if it was live. i know they would have had 1 more viewer at least (me lol) who was watching then but missed it on tape (yes all 10 times)

Well, I don't blame them. Poker is much more cheaper.:o
