Elena improved her serve a bit. She served harder but still made many double faults. She played awesome though.
Maria made too many unforced errors and also double faults. She needs to work on that if she wants to win AO. Anyway, I think that Elena has better chance to win because she can serve now and it's good one.

Because their precious Sharapova lost. ;)

Yeah yeah yeah, it's an exhibition, we all know. Players don't feel as much pressure when it's an exhibition; I never did and still don't. Regardless, this is definitely good news to hear. Anyone know if any of these matches/tournaments going on currently will be televised in the US? Seems like they don't show us anything here.

Anyone know if the match was made up more of Sharapova playing bad and Dementieva taking advantage, or did Dementieva really just outplay her? There is a difference, you know. Everyone has an off day. Kinda like Marat Safin losing to Coria indoors just recently.

I went to see the match live~ I now must say that Elena D is going to be one of the threats for AO or for the rest of the year. :) She did not use a single badly tossed slight serve but hit all serves with full speed! She is going to be one of the toughest to beat. She matched with speed and power of Maria and hit huge return off Maria's serves.

Lena was broken once in each set only. She was able to hold serve from 0-30 down a few times thanked to great serves which Maria had difficulty to read - she was not hitting all serves wide on deuce court and down the line on ad-court! I don't know if was because the match was an exhibition, Maria's game and morale fluctuated up and down since the middle of the second set. She was not disinterested to win, but she made lots of errors, plus Elena was certainly doing a great job. :)

Masha didn't play bad, the thing is that Lena played better, cause Lena was also with a good server (not perfect one, but a good one compared with her old server)
And..c'on, the excuse for Masha loss is that she played bad? No, Masha didn't played bad, I hear (and saw) comments of peoples that saw the match and they say that Masha was playing well, but Lena was playing an amazing tennis (and she also counted with a help of her server ;) )

And Maria didn't have an off day....againm, she played well, but Lena was amazing
And Marat losing to Coria was not that impossible, Coria was getting better and he is an excelent player
Like HAAS, so, Marat lose for 2 great players

I was at the match, for 1 1/2 sets i thought maria would win. she was serving hard, returning hard and very aggressive and accurate. but she played a lousy service game when down 3-4 in the second set. she was going for too much in her serves (too much confidence) and served 3 doubles to lose that game. elena then served out the set, leveling at 1 set all.
after that maria seemed deflated which was unusual coz she's a fighter and elena got some confidence back and cut down on her DFs (which she still served 10+ during this match). it was pretty one way traffic in the 3rd. maria was really pissed off she just walked off the court without saying bye or doing an interview with the tv host.
and i can tell u that both girls were really going for it despite it being an exo, u can tell both girls really wanted a win going into AO.

ps it was too late and i didnt stay for the kuznetsova-zveroneva singles, sorry guys!

Hmmm, so after reading all those exhibition threads, including this one, I have now come to this conclusion: only maria sharapova takes exhibition seriously. When she wins, it is because her opponents don't care, but when she loses, it's because her opponent is just way too good for her and she sucks, right? I know that Maria cares about these exos, and there aint no way I'm denying that. Congrats to Elena cuz she must have played well to win today, but the way people are rubbing this in Maria fan's faces is just getting cruel and unusual. Not all Maria fans are like those who say she is invincible and blah blah. Most of us are better than that, and when you people mock Maria or put her down, you are not just sending your message to those annoying Maria fans, but the rest of us as well. I don't insult other players when they lose and I don't rub losses in people's faces, why must you?

Dementieva beats Sharapova in opening match

January 5, 2005

HONG KONG (AP) -- Elena Dementieva beat Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-1 Wednesday in the Champions Challenge exhibition tournament, preparation for this month's Australian Open.

``It's a very nice start for the year, especially against a good player. I did a lot of positive things today,'' said Dementieva, runner-up at last year's French Open and U.S. Open.

``My serve needs improving and I think it was probably the weakest link of my game last year. My game is improving.''

The fourth-ranked Sharapova was let down by her erratic play. She appeared distracted by several line calls and was startled early in the first set when a boy threw a tennis ball into the court from the spectator stand.

``I worried about my own safety. I want to protect myself. I want to be protected,'' the 17-year-old Russian said about the thrown ball.

``I didn't play that well. If I had to give myself points from one to 10, I would give myself a three,'' Sharapova said.

In another match, U.S. Open champion Svetlanta Kuznetsova didn't have any problems in beating fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3.

Venus Williams plays Zvonareva on Thursday at the six-player, round-robin event, which also includes Nicole Vaidisov of the Czech Republic.

I also watched the match, it is amazing just how much her serve has improved! She well and truly deserved to win that match, maria was playing some good tennis for the first set, and the tie break was very pleasing, maria holding her nerve to win it fairly convincingly. however, maria's game seemed to fall apart midway through the second set and never seemed to recover, WAY too many unforced errors. Lets hope maria gets some rest before the aus open.
What an awful day, Maria loses her singles and doubles, Marina Erakovic gets struck down by the flu and loses in auckland, and vera loses doubles! Things can only get better!

Dementieva upsets Sharapova in opener

HONG KONG (AFP) - Russian world number four Elena Dementieva defeated Wimbledon (news - web sites) champion Maria Sharapova with a come-from-behind 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-1 victory to make a winning start in the Watsons Water Champions Challenge.

Dementieva didn't let the loss of an opening set distract her as she won the all Russian encounter in just under two hours with her brand of power tennis.

Dementieva, 23, who reached last years Grand Slam finals at the French and US Opens, said she was pleased to have beaten Sharapova having lost to her rival three times from four previous encounters.

"I think its a very nice start for the year, especially against a good player. I did a lot of positive things today. I did pretty good for my first match," said Dementieva, who is making her fourth visit to Hong Kong.

"My serve needs improving and I think it was probably the weakest link of my game last year. My game is improving. It (my serve) really helped me today and it was nice to play like that."

"Its the second time I have beaten Maria. We have played four times before. Shes a good player and its always tough to play her because she got such a good serve. I tried my best today," said Dementieva.

Asked when she could win a Grand Slam having come so close last year, Dementieva replied: "I dont know. I am really trying hard. I hope it will be this year. I went close last year and maybe with a better serve, I have a chance of doing it."

Dementieva was quietly confident of winning the Hong Kong tournament but warned it would be tough "because there are so many top players."

Sharapova offered few excuses for her surprise loss, but said she was distracted by several line-calls and a ball thrown by a fan during the first set.

The ball was thrown by a young man with Down's Syndrome just when she was about to serve.

"I worried about my own safety. I want to protect myself. I want to be protected," she said about the thrown ball.

"I have to feel safe in order to perform well," said Sharapova.

"I didnt play that well. If I had to give myself points from one to 10, I would give myself a three."

"I should have played better. I wasnt that consistent. I didnt do what I had planned to do. There were some line calls which were bad for me and some were bad for Elena too."

Sharapova must defeat Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova Friday to stay in contention in the tourmament, which is using a round-robin system with the winner of each group advancing to Saturday finals.

US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, meanwhile, had no problems in her singles match as she swept aside fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3.

World number five Kuznetsova outslugged world no. 11 Zvonareva to win the 52 minute duel.

I can't see how Maria could have known at the moment that it was just a tennis ball, let alone the condition of the thrower. It's not something that you expect to happen when you go out on a court that ppl start throwing things at you, be it a ball, a teddybear or a hand grenade.

It looks more like it's Myskina and Dementieva who will be the ones every other woman has to deal with in the Russian "domination" category.

yeah...and they are very VERY good friends too
The Russians sisters will kick all the asses :haha:

It's only an exho match people. Relax. And yes I would feel the same way if Masha won. Nice will for Elena. But it will only make Masha mad!

People take any excuse to turn a thread into a Masha-hate thread

It was one of the first matches of the year.

Can we not just say "Good job" to both players, and "Good on them" for doing a charity event?

I watch the match and all i can say is that it is reminiscent of the Zurich match!

only the reasult is the other way around.
great intensity from sharapova & Elena is relaxed and she is always smiling.
Masha was full of tensions but Elena looks so happy.
very contrasting court attitude really!!!

:haha: At how some people start crowing after one exhibition match!

Or Myskina struggling against Groenefeld in Australia...

how come you can watch it at usa

I didn't get to see the 1st set but Elena
played quite well in those last two sets!

Some of those return of serves on both
side were just absolutely amazing!

I sure hope whatever it is that's bothering Maria will pass quickly. Greenout said she was unhappy or tense perhaps during the Thai exhibition. The pressure Maria must be under is tremendous. Unlike Serena and Venus, I don't think Masha has parents who will protect her from outside forces trying to get a piece of her as much as they should.

And maybe her father puts even more responsibilities and pressure on her.

I hope she was just tired from the travelling and all, but you might be right. I can only hope she gets enough rest for the beginning season and avoids injuries, she's a real talent but also blessed/cursed with good looks, damn them if they burn her out.

I'm disappointed in Maria... obviously she didn't play her best to lose the last set at 1. But 3 stars out of 10? She took a set! She might as well just say Elena is rubbish.

Obviously it is just an exhibition, but there are still good signs to take out of it. I mean, it's partially a psychological thing, Maria had beaten Elena both times last year, and another consecutive loss could've hurt.

I can't see how Maria could have known at the moment that it was just a tennis ball, let alone the condition of the thrower. It's not something that you expect to happen when you go out on a court that ppl start throwing things at you, be it a ball, a teddybear or a hand grenade.

Like Ron Artest in Detroit!

The only thing is that Maria's on-court intensity is either good or bad in her career!
sometimes it helps her win big matches, sometimes she overdoes it and backfired to many UEs.

I just wish when Maria matures she would be able to control her intensity. I wish her to play cool, and be happy & smile too!

BTW, i dnt think Yuri (or Yelena) would let anyone hurt or take advantage of her. She is safe with her parents.
I know she can handle the pressure, she is a strong girl! no need to worry actually!

I was surprised to see the new fortified serve she has. Still lots of double faults but Maria couldn't attack those serves anymore like she always did against Dementieva.

Dementieva should really be proud of this feat because Masha is always a dangerous player. She's very explosive but though she's won two majors already, she's still a bit less experienced than Elena. If she can tone down a bit on her explosive shots and start putting back the balls on court instead of smashing the hell out of them for quick winners, then she'll do better.

On that note, I'm really really impressed with Elena. She held on strong and kept that noisy grunts from Sharapova out of her mind (which even for a viewer like me is so annoying). Maria said she played only 3 out of 10 to rate her performance. My take on it is that, if that's the case, her best tennis would be at 6. Because she wasn't playing too bad at all, she just faced a tougher, better player in all departments.

Dementieva seems to always Beat Sharapova.

She beat her at Moscow right

Shut up. Obviously, this wasn't just any exhibition for the players who played full-hearted out there.

Truth be told, Dementieva proved a big deal in that match against Sharapova.
