it depends on how well each player performs, but i'd say that Mauresmo has the strongest chance to get to number 1

i think lindsay will stay nmbr 1. especially since she's playing syndey intrnlt. unless there's some sort of freak incedent she should get to the final there. so thats another 137 points for her. 195 if she wins.

Elldee
Jan 4th, 2005, 02:47 PM
Indeed, and Amelie's not playing Sydney. Lindsay should get to the semis at least and since she got to the quarters last year, there's points to be added.

myskina would have to win sydney and the aussie open, and lindsay would have to do really bad in both tournies for myskina to take over #1

maria sharapova!!! she will win aus open

Mauresmo will have to win aus open to get to no1, that won't happen because she doesn't win slams!

i can't wait for Maria to be #1, but it definately won't be until later in the year. She's over 1,000 points behind the dav.

maria has no points to defend in the first few months of the year :bounce:

Davenport has points to defend

Dave B

Contenders for post AO number 1:
Davenport: 1 with points off and plans to play Sydeny and AO. This puts her in a great position to keep it, even with not so good results (e.g. quarters). There is also no reason to think she won't play well, and she even has a shot at winning AO.

Momo: Only playing AO. With Davenpot playing S., I think that she will have to win AO or final and hope Davenport has subpar results. Although this could happen as she is a great player, she is having injury issues as well. Don't despair though, with Davenport having points coming off the week after AO, Momo will still be in the number 1 mix after AO.

All others: Will have to hope for poor Momo AND Davenport performances, which is unlikely. However, if this occurs and Myskina wins the AO, it is possible for her to take it. The others are just to far behind IMHO.

Momo will choke once she's given the opportunity to take over the top spot. It will be a replay of the US Open where she couldn't defeat Dementieva.

Davenport will hold onto the #1 spot, but my prediction is that she will have to pull out of the AO. If she plays she will go out early with injury.

Davenport will keep the top spot by default. Peace!;)

I think there might be HUGE changes if the veterans become healthy and hungry again. The only reason why the top 10 looks how it does now is because of injuries and lackluster results. Capriati, Williams S., Williams V., Clijsters, Henin, all were not at the top of their games for most of the year. Not to take anything away from the Russians, because they did their thing in '04, but I don't think they would've had an almost slam sweep provided the other girls were in form. Just my take on it though.

And by the way HUGE congrats to Lindsay for an awesome year, and SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad Momo didn't get the #1 spot because she didn't deserve it with all those chicken bones she choked on. Hopefully Lindsay will play the whole year...or at least all the slams before she goes

I think Lindsay will stay number one. She'll at least make the quarters of the Open, and doesn't have THAT many points to defend. Mauresmo would probably have to make the final or win it to overtake, and I don't think she has the nerve to make it that far. Anastasia might be an outside bet. And the rest are too far off to overtake after the Australian summer.

Jan 5th, 2005, 09:30 AM
I think Linds will be #1 but will probably lose it before the clay season. If not, then during/after it.

Sorry; but I don't really agree.

I don't think you could have stopped Vampire, Sveta, ED and
especially Sharpy from breaking high in the top 10. I think
Venus, Cappy and LD benefited from the lack of a good Serena,
JHH and an awol Kimmy more than the team Russia. Age
is on the side of the Russian girls. The outcome of the matches
against the American -vs- the Russians would IMHO now have
been the same regardless if Justine or Kim were in the draw.
This had nothing to do with them, the Russians simply out
played LD, Venus and Cappy in many of their matches.

Nastya :yeah:

Andrew.

Lindsay will probably have it after the AO, and through Tokyo depending on her results there. Amelie will regain it in Paris or Antwerp, but this year Lindsay is playing bothe Doha and Dubai, while Amelie is playing neither. The ranking should go back to Lindsay at that point, and stay there until the summer with Amelie's massive clay points coming off.

Even if she doesn't regain it at the Aus Open, Amélie has a good chance to regain the No. 1 position at some point in the first two or three months of 2005, because after Aus she has nothing to defend until Amelia Island in April! :D

I mean, she could, but I don't think she plans on playing that much at this time...she usually waits until red clay court season to play lots of tournies, and she has mega points to defend their anyway.

Amelie can get it in February, but would probably lose it later that month when Lindsay plays the Middle Eastern hardcourts, where Amelie is not playing.
