Sharapova says Russian domination of women's tennis set to continue

HONG KONG (AP) - Russia's domination of women's tennis is set to continue in 2005, although it will be hard to match the three Grand Slam titles the Russians won last year, Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova said Monday.

The 17-year-old Russian - in Hong Kong to compete in the four-day Women's Champions Challenge exhibition tournament - said last year was amazing for Russian tennis.

"2004 was beyond anybody's expectations for our country. We were in the mood to win and to get great results," said Sharapova, who defeated American Serena Williams in last year's Wimbledon final.

The blonde teenager said there was no secret why Russia has taken the women's game by storm. "We work hard at what we do. We take it as our job. Everybody wants to be No. 1 in the world."

Sharapova heads a world-class field at the Hong Kong tournament at Victoria Park that acts as a warm-up for this month's Australian Open in Melbourne.

Other Russians who will be competing in Hong Kong are U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva.

The only top Russian missing is Anastasia Myskina, the French Open winner.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams of the United States and rising Czech player Nicole Vaidisova are also featured in the tournament.

I agree with her!
I don't necessarily agree with her due to the fact that the Belgum was supposed to dominate for a couple of years and look what happened. Yes, there are many Russians, but not all of them a good or top ten material.

Well of course they are not gauranteed to dominate but there certainly is a fair chance! I mean there are 4 Russians in the top 6, top Russian players are a lot younger esp Sharapova than other players.

I think the Russians will at least win 1 slam this year and be a constant threat everywhere. I think there will around 8-10 Russians in the Top 20 by the end of 2005 :)

I didn't say there wasn't a fair chance, just that the dominaton isn't a certainty. True there are four Russians in the top six, but they are ranked behind a 28 year old American and a 25 year old Frenchwoman who has yet to win a Slam. In additon, Myskina and Dementieve are the sam age as Serena (23), and others who are ranked in the top 20 are around that age, so the age difference isn't that great. Plus, with the logjam of Russians in the top ten, it is possible that only one or none of them will ever reach the top spot.

none reaching top spot ever? well thats not REALISTIC! i could bet my life that at least one will reach the top spot.

considering the ages of the russians. also look at davenport and mauresmo, davenport will be retiring, you really think mauresmo will hold on to the top spot forever? i think not!

I hope not because then we will hear that the Russians are destroying the game? I wonder why we have not heard that Maria's power has ruined the sport? Hmm.....

They will have to have much better results at the Slams and be more consistent at other tournaments for that to happen. That's why it took Jennifer, Venus and Serena that long for them to reach the top spot.

BTW, Mauresmo is not number one now, Lindsay is and I know she will not be number one for long. In addition, if the Americans and the Belgians can shake off their injuries and have better results, that will also cause a problem for the Russians trying to get to number one.

Probably because it was already done about four years ago by two Americans.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I don't think blondes are pretty; people with dark hair and skin appeal to me (black or white).

Hard to argue against Russia's strength. Elena may be a hater and Mysinka has loads of issues ---> but the Russian contingent is as talented, and probably more numerous than any national assembly the WTA has ever seen.

And they've done it without lowdown dirty tricks. Ala Justine.

Well they have about a 4/8 chance if Jen and Venus play no better. Add a bit more if Lindsay and Momo keep on not making it to the finals. Bit less if Serena and Justine play well. Bit more if Serena and Justine remain erratic. Lot more if Elena B, Vera and Nadia improve a bit.

She didn't say that Russians will once again dominate 2005. I do agree with her reference to the work ethic of Russians. A trait a lot of players lack.

If you read the first sentence of the article, that's exactly what she said.

BTW, a hard work ethic is something the Americans have or else they would not have 17 GS singles titles and more than 100 singles titles between all the active American womens' players.

True. There are a lot of great American players and for a while, they've been cruising over the Russians and low-ranked players. Nowadays, a lot of players are getting better and ceased from rolling over. On the other hand, I sense a certain resistance from these top players to improve on their weaknesses, which are time and again exposed by Russians. Venus can't hope anymore for her opponent to mess up. Lindsay will now be forced to do a hell lot of running than she's comfortable with.

Please quote that line where Maria said the Russians will dominate women's tennis this year.

the russians did well last year, and they could do well again this year but venus and serena and lindsay and the belgians i think they are going to be ones to watch along with the russians. would be nice to see some young players get up there as well.

I bit the bait too, don't worry. I thought something was odd
about this headline. Sharpy has yet to my knowledge, and I read
most of the press issued from around the globe, to say something
out right- blunt or arrogant.

There's no quote in this article even near the title of the article.
"Everyone wants to be number 1", "we work hard".

There no quote about domination. I haven't even read an article
where she uses that word. :tape: Typical article from
the AP wire (Associate Press) that is for an USA audience, and
not very accurate with quotes nor facts.

I don't think Maria is totally off the mark. Russia will one Slam at the very least.

Nastya and Maria are my likeliest bets, but I do feel Elena D (not just from bias) will break out in 2005 too.

Good luck! :) (May Jen win a Slam too) (and Venus)

i think last year pretty much most of the russians improved somewhat, definately the ones in the top 20 and also safina. sharapova, myskina, kuznetsova and dementieva showed it better through results than the others but bovina and zvonareva improved quite a bit and petrova is always dangerous and dinara showed she had a lot of potential pushing a few top players to 3 sets, kirilenko and douchevina both took a top 10er to 3 sets and anna c beat myskina and linetskaya broke into the top 100 as well, so if you allow for the players like kirilenko, douchevina etc to improve this year and the ones at the top plus safina to keep playing well then with sheer numbers they are bound to win at least one slam. they wont all win slams but they are giving each other a very good chance simply by having so many countrywomen that can make upsets and open up the draw for each other.

i still think that the russians have a task to win the slams tho because i think serena will bring back her top game and the belgians are fighters whether they are playing their best or not plus the other top players like lindsay.

will be an intersting year.
