I know we have had a thread for Chinese players, but I think Li Na deserves her own thread with her so much potential.

In this thread, hopefully we can keep track of Li Na tournament results over the year, her ranking and most importantly her latest news.

A pretty close match. Too bad Li Na lost it. Well, she is the last Chinese player standing :D. But there's no shame to lost to Nadia. I hope Li Na will get experience from that.

Judging from the Australian Open Draw, Li seems to have the best draw and could progress the furthest.Shuai could face Venus in 2nd round, Jie has to beat Safina in round 1 THEN will face either Stosur or Mauresmo! Li can easily get into the 3rd round... Laura Granville then probably Asagoe, maybe a 3rd round match up with mary pierce? that would be fun!

Those pics are great woohoo :D I read in the AO thread she played well with strong groundies on both sides, lots of winners, but she was a bit erratic in the set she lost, spraying the ball out wide a bit. But still, she'll play better once she gets into the swing of things :D  go Li

Btw, I saw her first round match on Monday. I am impressed with her groundstrokes, powerful and deep :worship: She hardly made unforced errors and her consistency forced the opponent to make errors. However, she lost focus in the second set and that's mainly the reason she lost the set.

One thing that definitely can be improved from Li Na: her serves are quite slow. If she has a big serve, I am sure she can beat anyone on tour ;)

Good luck in the 3rd Rd Li Na, against Maria Sharapova :scared:

AP - Feb 6, 8:53 am EST
More Photos (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/gallery)HYDERABAD, India (AP) -- Maria Kirilenko (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/54/) of Russia beat top-seeded Li Na (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/1210/) of China 6-4, 6-3 Thursday to reach the Hyderabad Open semifinals for the second straight year.

The eighth-seeded Kirilenko next faces Sania Mirza (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/461/) of India, who came back to defeat Tzipora Obziler (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/313/) of Israel 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) and advance to the first WTA Tour semifinal of her career.

In the other quarterfinals, second-seeded Anna Lena Groenefeld of Germany eliminated Sun Tian Tian of China 7-6 (5), 6-3, while Alyona Bondarenko (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/524/) of Ukraine defeated Marie-Eve Pelletier (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/501/) of Canada 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Later, Groenefeld and doubles partner Martina Navratilova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/214/) quit while leading 3-2 in the first set against Akgul Amanmuradova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/1261/) and Tatiana Panova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/53/) because Groenefeld strained her right knee.

It wasn't immediately clear if Groenefeld would be able to play her singles semifinal.

Playing with a strapped left thigh, Li's court movements were slow against Kirilenko. Li saved a match point in the final game, but then she double-faulted and lost on an unforced error. ``Things didn't go my way. It just wasn't my day,'' Li said.

Li Na's French Open Trip Still Vague
2005-5-19 17:18:45
CRIENGLISH.com

China's top tennis player Li Na is still considering whether to participate in next week's French Open.

Li Na, ranked 33, arrived in Roland Garros with the Chinese team. However, the foot injury she sustained two weeks ago at Rabbat has still not healed completely.

Li Na was forced to bow out in the semi-finals at Rabbat due to the foot injury.

Doctors have suggested that she rest for five to six weeks.

Li Na was picked out by Roland Garros organizers as a burgeoning star.

She and two other Chinese players, Zheng Jie and Peng Shuai have secured a berth in the French Open draw based on their world rankings.

In a related development, China's Sun Tiantian has entered the second round in the qualifying while teammates Li Ting and Liu Nannan have exited.

Did she twisted it again? Or was it too much pain that forced her to retire?

In someone's match report on wednesday's matches (I think a poster called Joe_B ?) Na was playing with the ankle strapped, clearly the injury has not fully healed, and the poster also said he wasn't that impressed with her game. Surely if Na was fully fit she'd have been more impressive and been able to finish in 2 sets v Jankovic, i think anyway... all i hope is for Na to get better before US Open, i want her to get big points and achieve her potential :D

Li Na faces daunting task at US Open
www.chinaview.cn (http://www.chinaview.cn)
2005-08-25 20:03:00

BEIJING, August 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese tennis number two Li Na will face an uphill task at the upcoming US Open, not only due to her recurring ankle injury.

According to the draw of the US Open released on Thursday, Li, currently ranked 39th in the world, will take on former world number one Lindsay Davenport of the United States at the first round of this year's final Grand Slam, which will open on Monday.

It would be very hard for Li to defy the odds as Davenport is expected to do her best to regain her top rankings which she had just conceded to Russian Maria Sharapova.

Another hurdle for Li is her ankle injury, which is yet to fully heal.

Her ankle was badly injured in a warm-up event for this year's French Open, which forced her to miss the Grand Slam in Paris. The injury recurred when she competed at the recent Rogers Cup.

"Li Na is really unlucky. She has been beset by the ankle injury before the two Grand Slams, and at the US Open she will meet such a strong opponent as Davenport at the first hurdle,"saidSun Jinfang, the official in charge of Chinese tennis.

"It is a test for her,"Sun added.

But Sun confirmed that Li Na would not withdraw from the US Open despite the injury.

"Her injury is not very serious, and she is sure to be there,"Sun said.

Three women's players from China will compete at the US Open with the other four starting from the qualification stage, a new record for China in terms of the number of entries for Grand Slams.

Besides Li Na, the other Chinese stars include Chinese number one Peng Shuai and Zheng Jie Peng is the highest-ranked Chinese player but failed to be seeded for the US Open after her ranking dropped from the 31st to 35th due to injury. But Peng would have much less resistance in the first round where she will meet a qualifier. Zheng Jie, standing 64th in the rankings, was drawn against Iveta Benesova of Czech Republic.

Li Na gave a very good account of herself tonight aganst Lindsay 1st round USO 2005.... Although she lost 6-4 6-4, there are a lot of positives from this match I think. Firstly, I think she will be over the whole nerves in a big stadium problem she's had so far, e.g. against Sharapova AO 2005 round 3. Secondly, even without the best serve in the world, she can fight it out, and even serve a couple of Aces. Thirdly, she managed to keep her UE's down, to an extent (still too many I think), as well as pulling off some AMAZING winners. serving 3-5 down in the 2nd set, 3 straight backhand winners to save the first of Lindsay's match points, then that awesome back hand down the line when under pressure from Lindsay to save the third of the 4 match points :worship:
Finally, just think... if she had decent prep and not had to pull out of the Rogers Cup early, or re-injure her ankle there and she was 100% fit, it wouldn't have surprised me if she won a set from Lindsay, or dare i say it even cause an upset.
Well done Na, very proud of you! You've won a lot of new fans tonight I'm sure  :D

maybe next time she will do better :)

Na has at least two tatoos. One on her left chest and one on her right lower back, I think. She had also nice piercings and nice red nails.
I love it because I've never seen piercings, tatoos and red-nails on a chinese girl so far :)

Na improved a lot. Her serve is trickier now and the pace and power in her groundstrokes were unbelievable. She looks like she did a lot in the gym. Look at her legs
If Na had drawn a different Top-Player she would have had a big chance to win the match. She was so strong. But Davenport liked Na's pace and was really playing well.

Well, there was thought that she might go back to school instead...partly because of her frustration with the Chinese Tennis Federation...but they're supposedly bringin in foreign coaches so maybe that'll help Na's confidence in them...?

Na will debut in 2006 in Gold Coast Tier III. Hoping for a good draw. Sharapova, Schnyder, Hingis could all be 1R opponents

Na lost 2-6 2-6

Very disappointing scoreline let alone result.

But at least this gives her time to prepare for Sydney qualies starting on Friday. :)
