View Full Version : Exhibition: Watson's Water Challenge (Hong Kong, 5th-8th January)

Jan 2nd, 2005, 04:16 PM

Red Group {
Maria Sharapova
Elena Dementieva
Nicole Vaidišová
Green Group {
Svetlana Kuznetsova
Venus Williams
Vera Zvonareva

Each player plays the other two players in her group on a round-robin basis, with the winner of the Red Group playing the winner of the Green Group in the final.

I hope for a Maria v Vera final. It's always a high-quality match when they play each other, with Vera's tremendous fighting spirit and amazing retrieval skills providing the perfect foil for Maria's spectacular power-game of many winners.

DOUBLES: Semi-finals:

Maria Sharapova/Vera Zvonareva vs Svetlana Kuznetsova/Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario
Serena Williams/Venus Williams vs Elena Dementieva/Nicole Vaidišová

It's nice to see Vera as Maria's doubles partner, having replaced Amélie Mauresmo.

No easy matches for Vera here, but she does have some encouraging precedents:

Indian Wells 2003:
3r + Svetlana Kuznetsova, 3-6 7-6 6-4

French Open 2003:
4r + VENUS WILLIAMS [3], 2-6 6-4 6-4

San Diego 2004:
3r + SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA [7], 6-2 6-3

A bad day all round for me at the Watson's Water Challenge exhibition-tournament in Hong Kong:
Round Robin (Red Group):
- Maria Sharapova lt. Elena Dementieva, 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 6-1
(Green Group):
- Vera Zvonareva lt. Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-3 6-3

Doubles semi-final:
- Maria/Vera lt. Kuznetsova/Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, 8-3

Maria was tired, apparently, while Vera served 8 double-faults in her singles.

Round Robin (Green Group):
- Vera Zvonareva lt. Venus Williams, 6-2 4-6 7-5

Vera almost repeated her sensational French Open 2003 victory over Venus, recovering from 0-3 down in the third set to lead 5-3. Vera served for the match at 5-4 - just like she did (successfully) at that French Open - but this time, sadly, she didn't make it. I hear she was in tears again.

Doubles semi-final:
+ Vera/Elena Dementieva d. Venus/Serena Williams, 7-5 7-5

Vera had already lost the other doubles semi-final with Maria Sharapova, but was drafted in to replace Nicole Vaidišová, who sadly had to withdraw from the tournament with gastroenteritis.

This means that Dementieva beat Vaidišová by default to qualify for the final, for which Maria could have qualified if Vaidišová had beaten Dementieva, and if Maria had beaten Vaidišová on Friday.

I haven't heard any news about a replacement opponent for Maria - it should be Vera, as those two always play mouthwatering high-quality matches against each other! :D But my objective guess is Serena Williams.

Disappointing though Wednesday's results were for me, the girls did do a glamourous off-court photo-shoot!

It was particularly exciting to see Vera doing the glamour-thing for once! :hearts: Here's a nice individual one of her:

Vera played an exhibition doubles-match on Friday with Nicole Vaidišová. Unfortunately they lost 6-4 6-3 to Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, who played with Venus Williams in the first set and Elena Dementieva in the second! But the tournament-director was delighted that Vera agreed to play doubles with three different partners at such short notice.

I was not a Vera fan, but that all changed after I saw her this past week here in HK. :) She has been nothing but sporting and professional, filling in last minute for Mauresmo and Vaidisova.

I am now officially a fan of Vera's. :worship: I hope she had a good time here in HK and hope to see her again. Good luck in Melbourne!

Vera is a very nice girl. http://www.imagelink.org/id31187.gif

http://img36.exs.cx/img36/9775/gy6a00104uy.jpgI like big butts and I can not lie.
You other brothers can't deny,
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waste,
And a round thing in your face,
You get sprung.
