Tennis Champion Maria Sharapova Signs With IMG Models, The World’s Leading Model Management Firm

11/18/03

Maria Sharapova, the 16-year-old tennis champion who won two WTA Tour tournaments
during the past month and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2003, has signed an
exclusive model management contract with IMG Models. Sports management and
marketing company IMG has represented Sharapova’s tennis career activities since 2000.

Sharapova is the youngest player in the top 250, has a WTA world ranking of 32 and is
recognized as the upcoming star of the international tennis world. She has excelled in
tennis all her life. At age six Sharapova was attracting attention at tennis exhibitions in
Moscow (including one featuring Martina Navratilova) and began training at Nick
Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy at age nine. She joins an IMG Models client list that
includes supermodels Gisele Bundchen, Tyra Banks, Carolyn Murphy, Shalom Harlow
and Heidi Klum.

“Tennis is my passion and my number one, two three and fifth priority, but I’m
also excited about the options possible with IMG Models,” Sharapova says.

“Maria has emerged as a spectacular athlete whose personal qualities attract media and
television companies, sponsors and others globally,” says Chuck Bennett, Senior Vice
President of IMG Models. “She has made it very clear that tennis is her priority. Her
expanded management with IMG Models will present her with options she may choose to
pursue when she is not on tour. She will succeed because she has already proven to be a
winning tennis player.

”This year, Sharapova was named one of the “coolest girls” in America by YM Magazine,
appeared on TEEN PEOPLE’S list of 20 teens who will change the world, and was
named by SPORT Magazine as one of “21 athletes to watch” for in the 21st Century.
Recent profiles have also run in W, which called Sharapova “six feet tall and beautiful a
la Kim Alexis in her modeling prime,” USA TODAY, and PEOPLE Magazine.
Sharapova also appears on the “Craig Kilborn Show” on CBS-TV on Thursday, November 20.

MARIA SHARAPOVA Pairs With ‘SPEEDMINTON’ As Newest Extreme Sports’ First Spokesathlete

MIAMI – Maria Sharapova, one of the most exciting players in women’s tennis, has paired with the newest extreme sport, “Speedminton,” to introduce the high-energy racquet sport at next week’s NASDAQ 100 Open in Miami at the Crandon Park Tennis Center. The NASDAQ 100 event marks the official launch of this new sport to consumers as demonstrations and contests are held for the more that 250,000 fans expected to attend the two-week event.

The game’s unique equipment, which enables participants to strike unique “speeders” in excess of 180 mph, will be demonstrated by a hand selected group of the ball boy staff as they hit these new breed of badminton-like Speeders from the Crandon Park center court into the stands.

Sharapova, the 16-year-old, #24th ranked player in the world, recently shot a TV commercial at Carlsbad, California’s La Costa Resort and Spa which will also be shown on giant TV screens throughout the venue. This commercial focuses on the playful element of Speedminton and how it is “hard to resist”.

“It’s a great new sport, and I know kids and adults will have fun with Speedminton,” Sharapova said. “There’s something for everyone, from being the latest addition to extreme sports to a great workout. “I’m looking forward to introducing the game to the people in Florida. I know they’ve never seen anything like it,” she added.

Speedminton can be played indoors, outdoors, even at night. The Speedminton racquet is generously oversized with string tension set to maximize the acceleration of the speeder off of the racquet face. The patented “speeders,” much like a badminton shuttlecock, are where the magic of the game lies. Material innovations and the advanced aerodynamic shape create the rhythm and flow of the exchange.

Volleys between players are low and fast. In competitive play, opponents position themselves in “speedcourts,” boxes that are eighteen feet square and positioned forty-two feet apart. A tennis court can also be easily modified for competitive play. Easy play can take place on the beach, in a park and event at night. A casual volley is easy to learn and not as difficult to master as the more competitive play, which is ultimately what makes the sport addictive.

Players see immediate results from their practice and quickly move from recreational players to extreme Speedminton enthusiasts. Night play is the element that takes this activity into a whole new realm. There are three different speeder models available for the different methods of play; Fun Speeder, Match Speeder and Night Speeder. The Night Speeder comes with a Speedlight that can be inserted into the Speeder cap. Night time play without lights differentiates Speedminton from other racquet sports as well as almost all other sports and activities.

Speedminton Product Demonstrations will take place in the Speedminton Demo Area located in the USA Tennis Area adjacent to the Grand Stand Court.
The demo hours are as follows:
Wednesday March 24 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. A segment of the Kids’ Day program
Friday March 26 noon – 3:00 p.m.
Saturday March 27 noon – 3:00 p.m.
Sunday March 28 noon – 3:00 p.m.
Monday March 29 noon – 3:00 p.m.

SPORTS EDGE magazine, a sporting goods industry publication, named Speedminton as a top semifinalist for the “Sports Product of the Year” award. Speedminton will be available at select specialty and sports retailers in spring 2004 as well as online at www.speedminton.com. The product will be offered as a Speedset with everything needed to play: one Speedbag, two Speedracquets, one EasyCourt Set, four Speedlights, a three pack of Speeders and a Speedbag for carrying and storage.

I can't wait to use their products when I'm at home with family, on the road playing tennis, or simply hanging out with my friends."

Sharapova, the world's seventh-ranked tennis player, was one of the youngest champions ever at Wimbledon. She has built a global fan base, captivating all with her style, intelligence, wit and poise beyond her years. A truly global personality who possesses a champion's desire to succeed, Sharapova seems destined to join the ranks of the world's great athletes who transcend their sport to become global icons.

Sparkling Tennis Star Maria Sharapova Becomes TAG Heuer New Worldwide 'Sport and Glamour' Ambassador

December 13 2004 -- TAG Heuer, the prestigious Swiss sports watch and chronograph brand and the fourth largest luxury brand in the world watch market, is proud to announce that the young and charismatic tennis champion Maria Sharapova becomes its newest brand female ambassador. As, the new star of world tennis and, at 17-years-old only, already the winner of 2004 Wimbledon and WTA year-end championships, Maria Sharapova has signed a long-term ambassador agreement with the Swiss watchmaking legend, covering product development, advertising, public relations and merchandising.

"I am ecstatic," says Maria Sharapova, the 17-years-old Russian tennis star, and the third youngest Wimbledon Champion in WTA history. "To represent a brand as legendary as TAG Heuer is a great honor. TAG Heuer has been teaming with the greatest champions in the history of sports, renowned athletes like Carl Lewis, Ayrton Senna or nowadays Tiger Woods, and famous teams like Ferrari and McLaren. To me, TAG Heuer is the most prestigious luxury partner I can dream of, as legendary and glamorous as the individuals and teams with which it is so closely related, and yet at the same time ultra-fashionable and feminine. It's a perfect fit for me, as I love high tech, glamour and winning. I look forward to building a strong relationship with TAG Heuer in the coming years."

"In just two seasons Maria Sharapova has made her mark on the WTA pro tennis circuit, quickly advancing to the 4th singles 2004 WTA rankings, and winning two of the most famous tournaments in tennis," says Jean-Christophe Babin, TAG Heuer's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Off the court, her beauty and grace have romanced the fashion world, with profiles in leading fashion magazines, and the launch of her own perfume. She is truly a phenomenon. Determined, passionate and audacious, she has shown extraordinary character in taking on the best players in professional tennis and winning. At the same time she is graceful and extraordinarily feminine. Maria Sharapova works hard to be the best she can be, yet remains true to the joy and passion she feels for the game. Nobody in the world of sports better than Maria embodies the fusion of sport with glamour, and therefore TAG Heuer core positioning".

"She's the perfect TAG Heuer Ambassador, an ideal representative of the brand's core values of passion, prestige and performance, which have driven the TAG Heuer brand in its pursuit of perfection for 145 years. We are very excited that she is joining the TAG Heuer Team, and she will go a long way toward reinforcing the brand's profile in the professional tennis world, which goes back to our "Inner Strength" campaign in the 1990s, when Boris Becker and Monica Seles were TAG Heuer Ambassadors." Mr Babin concludes.

Maria Sharapova and the TAG Heuer Formula 1 and 2000/Aquaracer series
Like her fellow TAG Heuer Ambassadors, which include golfing legend Tiger Woods, Formula 1 race driver Kimi Raikkonen and world freediving Champion Tanya Streeter, Maria Sharapova will be directly involved in the development of new TAG Heuer products. In particular, the new ambassador will share her insights on the TAG Heuer Formula 1 and 2000/Aquaracer series, which reflects her sporting allure and distinctively young and feminine appeal.

After more than 20 years on the market, the 2000/Aquaracer Series, a must-have sportswatch, is one of TAG Heuer's most successful and emblematic designs, admired for its dress up/dress down versatility. Dramatically and regularly upgraded since 1982, the 2000 Series are singularly elegant timepieces that express both sportiness and femininity especially with its mother of pearl and diamonds versions. They are the ideal accessories for successful women like Maria Sharapova--seriously stylish, yet competitive athletes at the top of their game.

The TAG Heuer Formula 1 series was born in 1986 and relaunched in grand style early 2004 as the casual sportwatch, initially with a masculine range of colorful men's watches and chronographs. Young Formula 1 driver Kimi Raïkkönen has been the ambassador epitomizing the TAG Heuer Formula 1 in advertising. With Maria's input and collaboration, TAG Heuer will introduce in 2005 feminine versions of the TAG Heuer Formula 1, ideally as "Sparkling and sporty" as Maria.

The multi years contract between TAG Heuer and Maria Sharapova will begin December 12th, 2004.

Maria Sharapova will soon be the newest face to be showcased extensively in the famous TAG Heuer advertising campaign, "What are you made of ?" shot by world famous photographer Patrick Demarchelier and to be disclosed early 2005.

TAG Heuer, the benchmark in prestigious sports watches and chronographs since 1860, currently ranks as the fourth luxury brand in the world watch market. The Swiss watchmaking legend draws from its active engagement in the world of sports to create the most accurate measuring instruments and sports-inspired timepieces ever made. From the Olympic Games in the 1920s to its new role as official timekeeper and chronograph for the legendary Indy 500 and IRL championship, TAG Heuer has maintained a constant quest for innovation and excellence, pursuing the summit of performance and prestige. This is reflected in its partnerships with Team McLaren Mercedes in Formula 1 racing; with Tiger Woods and Ian Poulter at the highest levels of international golf and with Kimi Raïkkönen at the top of Formula 1. With Maria Sharapova, TAG Heuer more than ever stands for "Sport and Glamour".

If Maria keeps winning and stays a top tennis player for a few years she will be the highest paid female athlete in the world. But she has to stay a top tennis player for her to receive her performance bonuses in her endorsement contracts. Huge money is on the table for Maria in the coming years if she stays a top tennis player. Money that would make her current endorsements look like chump change.

expect some controversy involving her and Motorola in the near future. Sony Ericsson just clinched the deal to sponsor the WTA.

Of course, this depends on how fierce the rivalry between the cellphone companies is (i.e. is it Nike vs. Reebok, Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi level?) and how strict Motorola are with their 'exclusivity' clauses. Maria might have some problems appearing in shots where the Sony Ericsson logo is also displayed.

is their any possibilty she'll make a switch?? from motorola to sony ericsson after her contract ends...

lakan kildap
Jan 6th, 2005, 12:45 AM
Will she switch? Maybe, maybe not. After all, she used to have a Nokia, as she said in her post Wimbledon final interview. She'll probably use any phone as long as it works and looks good. Motorola just happens to be her sponsor now.

My remark about 'controversy' in the future is based on previous experience with the Nike endorsers (Jordan, Barkley, etc.) in 1992 Barcelona Olympics, who initially refused to wear Reebok-sponsored USOC jackets during the medal ceremony. Again, it all depends on how serious Motorola and Sony Ericsson are in their rivalry. Maybe nothing will happen at all, especially if Maria makes it known to organizers what she's allowed and not allowed to do under her contract.

PRESS RELEASE:
Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova Signs With I-Play
Press release supplied by Games Press
09:35 04/04/2005

London, UK & San Mateo, CA, April 4, 2005 -- Reigning Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova has signed with I-play, the mobile games company. Sharapova, who turns 18 on April 19, will front a new mobile game, titled I-play Maria Sharapova Tennis, soon to be available across Europe, Asia Pacific and North America.

Blessed with powerful first and second serves, a fierce two-handed backhand, great speed, and an arsenal of amazing ground strokes, Sharapova combines supermodel looks with an aggressive playing style. The Russian-born, U.S.-based player took the tennis world by storm when she won the 2004 All-England Championships at Wimbledon, the world's most prestigious tournament. Just 17 and only a professional player for three years, she also captured the WTA tournaments in Seoul and Tokyo before beating Serena Williams in the 2004 final of the WTA Championships in Los Angeles. In 2005, she won titles in Tokyo and Doha, Qatar, and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January.

"Tennis is a sport that everyone should be able to enjoy across any format, and by using my name in a mobile gaming context, I hope that tennis fans will be able to share my passion, whatever the weather or conditions of play," said Sharapova.

"As part of our drive to create mobile games for everyone, we are very pleased to bring an athlete of huge, global appeal like Maria Sharapova to mobile gaming. The game will be simple to play but difficult to master, just like tennis itself, and we are very much looking forward to working with our distribution partners as well as other Maria Sharapova marketing partners to bring it to as wide an audience as possible," said Paul Maglione, Senior Vice President of Publishing and Marketing for I-play.

I-Play Maria Sharapova Tennis joins other I-play mobile games based on well-known sports personalities, including Colin McRae Rally 2005; Nate Adams Freestyle Motocross and, via I-play's distribution arrangement with Electronic Arts, EA Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005.

The Maria Sharapova deal was brokered by IMG, the world's premier sports and lifestyle management firm. "The increasing popularity of mobile games enables us to help our sports personalities capitalize on the opportunities that this powerful medium presents. After a careful selection process we felt that I-play was the partner that we could work with closely and entrust with Maria Sharapova's name and image," said Greg Oldfield, Vice President Brand Marketing & Interactive Media, IMG.

The mobile games company behind the game today also unveiled its new brand, 'I-play' and its mission to make mobile gaming easy, intuitive and fun for a mass-market audience. I-play believes that gaming is an integral part of the global mobile lifestyle and will deliver on a 'consumer comes first' promise. Through an expanding games portfolio ranging from premium-branded action titles to simple, "one-thumb" puzzle and arcade games; I-play will bring consumers quality, easy-to-use and easy-to-access content that gives a great gameplay experience.

Yes, Bill Gates personally got on his hands and knees and begged Maria to work for him. On the basis that she is prettier than him.

I'm sure many of the visitors to this forum would not be objecting to seeing Maria in skimpy clothing.

Sad but true.
'fraid I would be objecting. strongly.
