December 29, 2004
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) -- Former Australian and French Open champion Mary Pierce (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/160/) withdrew from next week's ASB Classic on Thursday for undisclosed medical reasons.
Pierce, ranked 29th, was to be seeded third in the event, but her agent sent confirmation of the injury to tournament director Richard Palmer.
There was no indication whether Pierce's appearance at the Australian Open, which she won in 1995, was in jeopardy.
In November, Pierce pulled out of France's Fed Cup semifinal against Spain because of a right shoulder injury.
