Well it is that time of the year again. The time before a GS that we fear top players will withdraw and leave the GS with a watered down field. This year's AO looks to be no different, with 6 former Grand Slam Champions (including the top 2 player in the world) questionable to play and Clijsters already out.

1. Davenport - Pulled out of Hopman Cup w/ injury.
2. Mauresmo - Pulled out of Hong Kong Challenge w/ injury
3. Serena Williams - Injured in final of YEC. Pulled out of singles in Hong Kong.
4. Capriati - Pulled out of Hurricane Slam.
5. Henin - Not in good form in her own exhibition.
6. Pierce - Pulled out of Auckland.
7. Bovina - Pulled out of Gold Coast
8. Rubin - Has not played a match for a very very long time.

   Will these players be fit to play AO? I hope they all will be but my head says that even in the best case scenario, 3 of them may pull out

In the future, you should actually state who has withdrawn from the AO. At the present time, the only confirmed withdrawl is Jiri Novak.

Rephrase this thread by putting a "?" after "withdrawals" because this thread is misleading.

I doubt all those players will withdraw. Usually they pull out of exos as a precautionary step. That doesnt mean they will miss the Grand Slam.

Close this tread!

This is BS.

By the way- exhibition matches don't count. Remember Anna
always won her matches!

Oh- Justine is leaving on Monday from Florida to Sydney, so
stop talking crap here.

He did say "Will these players be fit to play AO?"
..but we'd expect to see most if not all of them playing in Melbourne :)

Serena has practiced since the YEC. She played those matches with Venus for the McDonald charity event. SHe just hasn't been able to serve. I think she's fine though.

Justine is doing well in Florida :)

From her site www.heninhardenne.be (http://www.heninhardenne.be/)

Justine has got her rhythm back
30/12/2004: http://www.henin-hardenne.be/bin/graphics/printer.gif (http://www.henin-hardenne.be/bin/shownewsprt.asp?lang=en&id=1772)
Sunny Saddlebrook has been Justine’s whereabouts for the past week. She’s heading for Australia on Monday where she will participate in two tournaments, Sydney and the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season.

http://www.henin-hardenne.be/bin/newspics/pic214.jpgAfter her stay in Spain, Justine is now preparing for her next season in Florida, where she works together with Pat Etcheberry again.
“It pleased her to see Pat again. The first days were hard, but now everything is going much better, she’s got her rhythm back”, her husband Pierre-Yves explained.

The Belgian Sportswoman of the year is combining physical and technical trainings with Pat and Carlos. In less than two weeks, she’ll make her official comeback on the courts. “Next week on Monday, we leave for Sydney”, Pierre-Yves specified. “Now Justine will have one week to get acclimatized, the tournament starts only one week later.”

Justine will probably be seeded 4th in Sydney, right after Lindsay Davenport, Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva. She’ll also have a bye in the first round. Justine won this tournament last year (she beat Amélie Mauresmo) and this year it’ll take place from January 10 till 15.

After that, the Belgian will head for Melbourne, where she will take part in the Australian Open (from January 17 till 30).

uh oh

add Amelie to the listThere are still two weeks to go until the AO, and according to what I've read (and what she's said), she's going straight to Melbourne on January 8th.

If those players withdraw, we will have the new face GS winner<I hope a russian wins it>in order to add more drama to WTA tour.

I think Pierce, Serena, Clijsters and Capriati are iffy!

Henin is certainly playing, her form might be average but she's not injured.

Dont know about Rubin

Mikaelian, Betrame, Shaughnessy all withdrew last minute from Gold Coast, Mikaelian rolled her ankle in pratice

It will just be Venus vs. the Russians  with the top 4 seeds being

1) Myskina
2) Sharapova
3) Kuzzie
4) Dementieva

My mistake about Beltrame, it was Bovina that withdrew last minute from Gold Coast allowing beltrame to move from Qualies to Main draw.

Anyone know what the deal is with Bovina???????

Lemonskin.

Anyone know about Maria Kirilenko?

She withdrew from the Gold Coast qualies. Anyone know why? Know whether she's still going to compete at Canberra/AO?

Pierce might not be coming, she withdrew from Auckland with an injury, and i dont think she made the trip to Australia at all last year, so she might not this year either.
