Peer causing stir among peers

Jan 6, 2005
By Dale Budge at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland

Israeli 17-year-old Shahar Peer has made quite an impact on the tennis world in the last few months and is beginning to make waves at the ASB Classic as the tournament reaches the quarterfinals.
The tournament qualifier is through to the final eight after a 6-3 4-6 6-2 win over Mara Santangelo of Italy on Wednesday.

Her quarterfinal match up on Thursday will be against Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia and will be the first match on Centre Court.

It has been a hectic few days for the former Juniors star, who has now completed five matches in five days - including three that went to a deciding set - all of which she has come out on top.

"I have been playing very well all week," she told reporters after her second round victory on Wednesday. "I have won five matches and it is the second time I have made the quarterfinals."

While most of her opponents have had to find their feet after the Christmas layoff, Peer has hit the ground running in 2005 and puts it down to some good preparation.

"I had quite good preparation before this year.

"I am playing a lot of matches and a lot of sets but I think I like it like this."

The ASB Classic has a history of top performances from qualifiers, particularly in recent times, and Peer has certainly grabbed the attention of the crowds in Auckland during the first half of the week.

The Israeli doesn't have to look too far back to find that her countrywomen have enjoyed tremendous success her in the past as well with Anna Smashnova winning the tournament three years ago.

"Anna is a really good player and I hope I will be like her," Peer said about the former champion but she admits that her child hood hero was in fact an American.

"When I was young I really liked Monica Seles."

The 17-year-old is not unlike Seles in appearance and in the way she plays her tennis.

Her quarterfinal opponent Katarina Srebotnik is ranked 87th in the world and comes into the match after wins over Russian eighth seed Alina Jidkova and wildcard Lina Krasnoroutskaya.

Peer has seen a little of the Slovakian in the past.

"Yes I did play her in Korea and I won against her in the second round.

"She is a really good player. She is a tall player with a good serve so I will have to think about how to play her."

If she can continue the form she has shown over the last five days, Peer may well prove to be a big ask for the remainder of the field, let alone Srebotnik on Thursday.

I'm quite impressed with her results to be honest...

But, she's a very good junior, so... ;)

(btw... my bad reputation points are due to one poster who's trying to give me a bad name... hope you are all mature enough to understand I'm not that bad... ;))
