Swimmer sells Olympic gold for charity

Associated Press

WARSAW (AP) - Olympic swimming champion Otylia Jedrzejczak has auctioned off the gold medal she won this year in Athens to raise money for children battling leukemia.

Jedrzejczak, 21, sold the gold medal she won for the 200-metre butterfly to Polish food company Victoria Cymes on Sunday for 257,550 zlotys ($103,060 Cdn), which will go to the Wroclaw Medical University.

"I am extremely happy that we were able to obtain such a high sum of money," Jedrzejczak said. "It will be a nice Christmas gift for these children, and for me that I can help them in some way."

Jedrzejczak said she was inspired to help children with leukemia by a book she read ahead of the Olympic Games about a boy who died from the disease, and vowed that if she won gold she would auction the medal for the cause.

That's nice, but I wouldn't sell my Oscar off for world peace.
