AntennA Dec 24th, 2004, 09:52 AM  Tamaryn  How old is that Solovieva? Her birthday is November 3th 1992, which means she's even trhee months younger than Tamaryn. It's strange Tamaryn lost that final which such numbers, cause she beat Solovieva at Eddie Herr in the 3rd round with 6-1, 6-3  arn Dec 24th, 2004, 10:02 AM Indeed strange. Maybe the nerves because she knew she could win that final? arn Dec 24th, 2004, 10:04 AM btw. Isn't Tamaryn born on 8th of december '92? That make her one month younger as Solovieva lauryn Dec 27th, 2004, 10:59 PM Some info on the match, not much on Tammy though: http://www.macon.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/10482041.htm TENNIS | JUNIOR ORANGE BOWL TENNIS TOURNAMENT http://www.macon.com/images/common/spacer.gif A cool, efficient win for Russian girl http://www.macon.com/images/common/spacer.gif Russian Valeria Solovieva beat Belgium's top-ranked 12-year-old in a Junior Orange Bowl final. More finals are set for today. http://www.macon.com/images/common/spacer.gif BY JOSUE SAKATA http://www.macon.com/images/common/spacer.gif Herald Writer http://www.macon.com/images/common/spacer.gif Valeria Solovieva is a shy and petite 12-year-old, not the type of player who would strike fear in the hearts of opponents. Once she takes the court, however, that's another issue. Solovieva won the girls' 12-year-old final of the Junior Orange Bowl Tennis Tournament on Wednesday, beating Belgium's Tamaryn Hendler 6-1, 6-2 at Salvador Park in Coral Gables. It was a significant victory for the girl from Saratov, Russia. She defeated Belgium's top-ranked under-12 player and avenged a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Hendler last month in the third round of the Eddie Herr International Junior Tournament in Bradenton. But all the emotion Solovieva showed was a faint scream after she won the match. ''I feel normal,'' Solovieva said. ''For me, I just try to play like I play all the time.'' Solovieva won the first game 40-15. After dropping the second game to Hendler on a fault, she won out the rest of her games in the first set. In the second set, she broke another 1-1 tie by winning games two, three and four. She won the fifth game of the second set on a double fault by Hendler. In the sixth, it reached deuce twice before Solovieva nailed a hard, two-handed volley down the left sideline. Hendler returned it into the net. ''She had a good topspin, good consistent game and good footwork,'' said coach Andrei Kozlov, who coaches Solovieva at the XL Tennis Academy in Delray Beach. ''Mentally, she was strong.'' Kozlov said Solovieva had an advantage playing on clay, and Solovieva agreed. ''For me, it's better,'' she said. ''I like running [on clay].'' BOYS In the boys' 14-year-old division, Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis advanced to the final by defeating Portugal's Elias Gastao 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. He will play American Chase Buchanan, who beat Lazare Kukhalashvili of Georgia 6-0, 6-0. Tomic Bernard of Australia and David Souto Vargas of Venezuela advanced to the boys' 12 final. American Krista Damico and Tamira Pasek of Austria will meet in today's girls' 14-year-old final at 9 a.m. at the University of Miami's Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The boys' 14 final follows the girls'. For information, call 305-662-6072. Svennovitch Dec 27th, 2004, 11:29 PM Thanks, lauryn :) | |
