Capriati pulls out of event
By KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer
Published December 17, 2004

TAMPA - Jennifer Capriati agreed to take part in Saturday's Hurricane Tennis Slam at the St. Pete Times Forum because she wanted to help those affected by the hurricanes.

But because of a nagging shoulder injury, Capriati will watch rising American Angela Haynes face No. 4-ranked Maria Sharapova, the reigning Wimbledon champion.

Though Capriati won't play, she will participate in activities throughout the day. But without her competing, the event, which benefits the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund, loses one of its top draws.

Capriati, 28, burst on the tennis scene when she was 13 and became the youngest player to reach the top 10. After a precipitous fall in the 1990s, the Saddlebrook resident rose again to become the Associated Press female athlete of the year in 2002.

"Obviously, we're disappointed Jennifer can't play," said Bill Wickett, spokesman for the Times Forum. "But her health is the most important thing. Obviously, this event is for charity, and we're hoping people come out and support the charity."

Capriati did not release a statement.

In the 17-year-old Sharapova, the event has perhaps the biggest name in women's tennis. She defeated Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final and is 55-15 with more than $2.5-million in earnings this year. The Russia native lives and trains in Bradenton and has made millions from endorsement deals.

Haynes, 20, is thought to have a promising future. She reached the third round at September's U.S. Open as a wild card.

"I am proud to be a part of this event," Haynes said.

After Sharapova meets Haynes, Sharapova and Russian Maria Kirilenko will play doubles against Nicole Vaidisova and Tampa resident Rennae Stubbs.

Vaidisova, 15, is a Czech Republic native who trains in Bradenton. She is the second player in WTA Tour history to win two singles titles as a 15-year-old. Stubbs owns four major doubles championships.

The event begins at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $16.75 to $76.75.

"Hurricane Tennis Slam" To Raise Money for Florida Hurricane Relief Fund

The Addition of Future Champion, Angela Haynes, Who Replaces Injured Jennifer Capriati, Creates a Showcase of the Rising Stars of Women’s Professional Tennis; All Part of a Charity Event To Raise Money for Florida Hurricane Relief Fund

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Rising young American star Angela Haynes will take on Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova at the WTA Tour’s Hurricane Tennis Slam on December 18, 2004 at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Haynes, who replaces the injured Jennifer Capriati, joins fellow future champions Nicole Vaidisova and Maria Kirilenko in an event that will showcase many of the future personalities, star power and rivalries in women’s professional tennis. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

World No.4 Maria Sharapova will meet American Angela Haynes in the featured singles match. The doubles match will follow, with Maria Sharapova teaming with Maria Kirilenko against Rennae Stubbs and Nicole Vaidisova. Former ATP world No.1 Jim Courier will offer commentary and entertainment during the star studded doubles match.

Capriati will be unable to compete in the singles match due to a continuing right shoulder injury. She is extremely disappointed to not play in the event she passionately supports. Capriati will be at the St. Pete Times Forum on Saturday and will be involved in the various activities throughout the day, all helping to raise funds for the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

Haynes, 20, hails from California and is an exciting young player to watch. She enjoyed a great run at the US Open, reaching the third round as a wildcard and defeating former Top 10 player Magdalena Maleeva in the second round. Haynes is being acclaimed as one of the future American stars in women’s tennis.

“I am so excited to play in the Hurricane Tennis Slam and be involved in such a fun and exciting event,” Haynes said. “I am proud to be a part of this event and assist with the rebuilding efforts in Florida.”

Seven-time WTA Tour champion Maria Sharapova leads the field, currently holding a career high of No.4 in the world. In 2004 and at age 17, Sharapova won Wimbledon in her first Grand Slam final. With this victory, she became the second youngest Wimbledon ladies champion in the Open era, after Martina Hingis, who was 16. Sharapova finished 2004 winning the WTA Tour’s prestigious season-ending Championships, defeating Serena Williams in a thrilling three-set final.

Following the singles match, the Russian duo of Maria Sharapova and Maria Kirilenko will take on 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova and Tampa resident, Rennae Stubbs.

Vaidisova is only the second player in Tour history to win two WTA Tour singles titles as a 15-year-old (the other being Jennifer Capriati). Stubbs is a former world No.1 in doubles and holds 50 doubles titles, including four Grand Slam doubles titles.

The Hurricane Tennis Slam will begin at 3:00pm at the St. Pete Times Forum, kicking off with a celebrity showdown. Renowned tennis coach Nick Bollettieri will demonstrate some of the expertise he has exhibited in coaching players such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Jim Courier. In addition, recent ABC “Bachelor” Byron Velvick and NBC sportscasters JP Peterson and Dave Reynolds will also be participating in the on court activities.

Prior to the exhibition, a free Kids Tennis Clinic at the St. Petersburg Tennis Center will take place on December 18 at 10:00 a.m. The clinic will feature Nick Bollettieri and several of his up-and-coming tennis student stars.

The WTA Tour’s “Hurricane Tennis Slam” will begin at 3 p.m. Ticket prices range from $16.75 to $76.75 (plus service charge). All proceeds will benefit the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

Tickets are available at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster.com or charge-by-phone at the following numbers:

St. Petersburg 727-898-2100
Tampa 813-287-8844
Orlando 407-839-3900
Lakeland 863-682-5300
Ft. Myers 239-334-3309

The St. Pete Times Forum will also be the site of the Mercedes Benz Classic on March 21, 2005, featuring Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Mardy Fish and others. Proceeds will benefit the Raymond James Courier’s Kids Club with tickets going on sale at the Hurricane Tennis Slam.

About the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund
All proceeds from the WTA Tour’s “Hurricane Tennis Slam’’ will benefit the Florida Hurricane Relief Fun established by Governor Jeb Bush. The fund is designed to help communities with their rebuilding efforts and is used for needs unmet by other disaster relief organizations also working to help rebuild lives and communities.

The Florida Hurricane Relief Fund is managed by nonprofit Volunteer Florida Foundation. To make a direct tax-deductible donation to the Fund, call 1-800-825-3786 or visit the internet at [url]www.flahurricanefund.org[\url]. To volunteer or make in-kind donations, call 1-800-FL-HELP-1.

She has a few weeks to rest. Hopefully the rest will do her wrist good.

Sharapova beat Haynes 6-2 6-1 even though the ump tried to give angela a game and make it 2 and 2
How did the umpire try to give her a game?

Anyway, it's very encouraging that Maria beat Lindsay Davenport again ahead of the Australian Open, even if it was just an exhibition. It's always important how you play against the top players, as the winner will have a psychological edge for next time.

Nice to see the Super Maria Sisters playing doubles once again. :hearts:
