View Full Version : Stronger Side....

Some players have a distinct stronger side, like Steffi's forehand, or Henin's backhand. But there are some players I am not very sure which side is the stronger one. Can anyone help me confirm my suspicions?

Iroda: I think her backhand is her stronger side, but I've seen many people on the board say her forehand is better. Which is her stronger side??

Iva Majoli: Again I think her backhand is stronger, but many people say it is her forehand. What do you think?

I know Capriati's stronger side is her forehand, but I've once heard a commentator said her backhand was better.

What about players like Lindsay and Serena. Usually it is their backhands that is great, but sometimes, I can't help but wonder why their forehands register more winners. So how do you define a stronger side, and how do you identify one?

Post the stronger sides of a player if you can !!

I have not seen enough of Iroda to comment on here, but here are my thoughts on the others you have mentioned.

Majoli-Forehand
Capriati-Forehand (she used to clock her backhand in the early 90's)
Serena-Forehand
Davenport-Even

I also think that Henin is even, her backhand is great, but she rips the forehand too. Henin's backhand stands out more because not many women can hit it that way.

I absolutely agree with Big Lindsay about Henin. Her forehand is deceptively strong!!

Well, I shall not deny that. But Justine's backhand is better because it takes far less time for her to hit. Her forehand however requires more time to set-up, and when it is rushed, is not a very good shot.

One more thing that is very interesting is how different Venus and Serena's forehands are though Richard thought them both the same thing. Venus' forehand can be absolutely horrible at times, and she kind of hooks it back. Serena's however is more like a drive rather than Venus' loopy/hooky swing.

About Justine's backhand vs. forehand...

I think the key here is "when her forehand is ON." In other words, my opinion is that her backhand is more consistent than her forehand...but when her forehand is working it's killer.
With Serena, I've seen matches where her forehand, oh, how shall I say this? - "Goes to hell." It just breaks down BADLY. But when it's working...well, you get the idea.

Sometimes her backhand doesn't look so great either. Her arms don't look so...oh "even"?

One of the reasons why I just can't enjoy Venus matches (win or lose) as much as Serena's is because of these aesthetic qualities.

IMO:

Henin - even (more forehand hits more winners, but backhand is less erratic)
Majoli - backhand
Capriati - forehand (it's always been her trademark)
Serena - forehand (pretty even i'd say only cause the forehand is more deadly)
Venus - backhand (it's waaaaaay better than her forehand)
Lindsay - even

Majoli has a great backhand down the line and a great forehand too, I'd put her as even.

Anyone has opinions on Mary Pierce?

Your strength can also be your weakness if its not working.

eg: Pierce has always had a better FH , her BH is more reliable , but if her FH is off then her game falls apart cos of unforced errors, alot of players are like this.

Alot of players use their strength to open up the court and then finish the point off using the opposite wing they used.

When Mary Pierce's forehand is on, it's a scary shot to watch.

Majoli's forehand was what won her that French open final I feel.

Capriati's forehand is less solid but probably more effective than her backhand.

Serena - forehand and backhand are pretty equal I think.

Lindsay - equal again (both amazing).

Henin - I think that her backhand is a much more penetrative shot and for that reason I think it's better. She doesn't really have much of a flat forehand that I've seen. Of course, she has greater accuracy on that side.

As for Venus, I'll never understand how her forehand works, but it can be so good at times and so bad as well. I'd definitely vote for her backhand being better.
