View Full Version : Expectations for Lindsay in 2005.

Assuming she plays an entire season.

How well will she do in the slams? Who will she lose to? win against? have problems with?

Where will Lindsay dominate?

How many titles will she get in singles and doubles and what tiers?

We have to do something 'til January!

slams-semis at the ozzy and us open, 3rd/4th at the french if she plays it...final at wimbledon...would say a win but im not jinxing it.

5 titles- Tokyo,Indian wells,Los Angeles,Filderstaadt,Season End

wont win anything in doubles

she will have prolems with myskina,Sharapova and i reckon golivan (sp??) could trouble her....she will own the williams till late summer when they will both be back and she will lose to serena at the us open semi...the belgians im unsure of...could bt henin but she is a difficult player for lindsay to play against but woth her eing out for a bit lindsay could have a chance.

im off to the bookies now..lol

That's no fun! :-p

I was reading a nice interview with Lansdorp and he said, it was during this years US Open, that Lindsay has another Wimbledon in her. Woo!

Anyway, I think:

AO - Semi.
FO - Quarterfinal [taking out Dementieva]
W- Win.
US - Win.

YEC - semis.

I think she'll win a low tiered doubles at the very start of the year and hopefully she'll defend pan pacific again!

Andrew.
Dec 4th, 2004, 08:20 PM
I really expect her to win at least one slam this year. She's the best player in the world, and if she's playing normally no one should be able to stop her.

Aus - Final
French Open- Don't play.
Wimbledon - Final/Win.
US Open - Final.

Win the Cali hardcourts again, this time including Indian Wells. I realyl hope she plays Miami. Just show up, then tank in the QF, and you get a good 150 free points there. Players I think will trouble her next year are Henin and possibly Serena. I don't see Myskina causing her too much trouble on a regular hardcourt or on grass.

Andrew.
Dec 4th, 2004, 08:20 PM
And, no doubles.

Elldee
Dec 4th, 2004, 08:25 PM
That's weird Andrew, when I first did my predictions I did the same as you but then I thought it ridiculous, but it seems illogical for her not to win. This year she only had one slam [the US] where she had the confidence to win and hopefully next year she'll reach her full potential.

I want her to win Wimbledon the most but an Aussie win would be the best way to keep Lindsay enjoying the game and have a great year.

I think she'll dominate the hardcourts again.

I think she has a good chance at the hard court slams next year. I'm not hoping a whole lot for the French.

Elldee

I think she has the most chance at the US and then Wimbledon so it makes the most sense to play the whole year... or petition for them to move the US and wimbly to January.

Andrew.
Dec 7th, 2004, 07:19 PM
There was a nice article on fox sports Australia today saying that if Lindsay wins the open she may retire *eek!* The article was short and taken totally out of context. She's already said she's planning on playing through at least Wimbledon. This is just pointless hype be the Australian media to add to the drama.

Elldee
Dec 7th, 2004, 10:10 PM
I agree. It's the dude from the australian open trying to boost the prestige of his events in relation to Lindsay's career... I don't see Lindsay retiring unless she tanks with a first round loss or if she wins.

Hey!!!!Where did you get this pic Andrew!!!! About Lndsay's predictions for 2005, I really hope she will win the Australian open, the really deserves it. But I think that she is more likely to win in Wimbledon. Well, in fact, I don't really want to expect anything, we could be surprised because no one expects her to win in Roland Garros, even if she doesn't like clay, she could play a really great game on it. About players who could annoy her during the season, I think about Kuznetsova, Sharapova, Myskina, and Henin. Lindsay can beat them as she is really confident right now, but it will be very hard. So now, let's wait until Sydney in january!!!!!

That is a very nice article and it'd be great if she won in Melbourne, but I really don't want her to quit in March!

Andrew.
Dec 15th, 2004, 08:42 PM
It's a completely innaccurate article. One, she's not retiring in March. She stated she has worked out a schedule through that point, not that she's quitting then. She also actually spoke about how she would schedule playing Wimbledon - re skipping Roland Garros or not. Then, you get down to the factual crap, such as Indian Wells being transplanted to Florida. Also, no direct quote from Lindsay in the article. Just losers who are trying to hype up their own tournamnet and add drama. Next.

I think Lindsay's best chance of a slam will be the Aussie Open. She needs to stay injury free. Someone made a very good comment in GM the other day that Lindsay is in the same stage of her career as Graf was in, during 1999: Another injury is just around the corner

Lindsay needs to win the Aus, if she does it will give her even more confidence for a fab 2005, and wimbledon ;)

Dec 19th, 2004, 11:25 PM
I think she sould have real good chnces an Tokyo and Indian Well and the Us-Hardcourts...she will win AO and maybe wimbledon

trouble with Henin, Serena and maybe sharapova Myskina
easy jobs woth capriati or dementieva

everything depens on her body and how strong the other will return

Depending on the reason she withdrew from the Hopman Cup I think she will probably manage semis in Sydney and probablyh the final in Melbrourne depending on the draw. Could win Tokyo again. Would like her to win the French Open but I don't think this will happen. May well win Wimby again if she stays injury free and a good bet for US Open glory again depending on fitness. Won't comment on anything else yet.

Just want her to be happy and have a terrific year:angel: :wavey:

I hope that eurosport coverage will be good this year and I hope eurosport will show a lot of matches of Lindsay, particularly in slams this year!!! I think you're absolutely right Jan, we can't make any comments yet, we can only hope for a impressive start and hope she will be injury free for this season.

Sorry guys and girls, i have to disagree with all that say she will win a grand slam. Don't forget she was thinking about retiring before she started dominating. Look at the time period at which she dominated. The only real threats were Sharapova who beat her in the Wimbledon semi-final and Mauresmo. Th other players were either injuryed/sick or not playing nearly as they would. Im expecting her to win NO grand slams, but to get to the semi-finals in all of them EXCEPT the French Open(Quarters).
I wouldn't expect Henin and Kim to really cause a problem for a top 10 player untill mid-season, maybe later. Venus WILL get better, but i am not expecting a grand slam win from her. If there would be one it would be at Wimbledon. But if everyone gets healthy who knows, but I think that this year it is all about Serena Williams, which i have eluded to on previous threads. Her determination is at an all time high. Her performance at Los Angelas was superb, considering how many tournaments she played.
Australian: Serena Williams**Tough one, need to wait to see draw**
French Open: Mauresmo (finally gets a GS win)
Wimbledon: Serena Williams
US Open: Serena Williams
***I can't see her lossing in Wimbledon and US Open**
**The last time Serena played the Australian she won it.**

I just saw this episode of Open Access and they chatted with Lindsay; I thought you'd all like to hear that she spent 2 weeks in Mexico during the off season, 1 week with 5 of her girlfriends and 1 week with her husband. I'm thinking that was after she played the Baltimore exhibition, so she probably went from Mexico and spent a few days at home before heading to Australia. I hope she's ready and relaxed!

Kelly

regarding serena winning 3 slams....lol....no chance.

the ozzy is gonna be lindsay best i feel....henin-out, kim-out,serena-stomach problems, venus-is just venus, sharapova-no match play, momo-nerves, myskina-not enough matches....jen-shoulder problems....i very much doubt lindsay will even play the french and focus on wimby.

Elldee
Jan 11th, 2005, 01:25 PM
Mauresmo - chokes, Venus - tough, but beatable, Myskina - little match practice, Serena - recovering from an injury but always dangerous, Jen - out, Justine- out, Kim - out, Sharapova - on a reduced schedule but with all her exhibitions she will be in form and she had a reduced schedule for wimbledon so that doesn't make much difference, Elena - seems like she's doing really well but Lindsay and her should meet at Sydney so we can gauge it from there and Kuznetsova will be thrashed as she would have been at Flushing. It's all in Lindsay's hands!

I think, if Lindsay doesn't win [probably due to an injury] we'll have yet another russian which will be a nightmare because I hate this russian revolution BS.

Win a Slam, thrash Kim and Justine if you meet them, and not retire. Thanks in advance.

Jan
Jan 12th, 2005, 08:24 AM
Well Kim, Justine and Jennifer are not play the Oz Open. Serena has not been herself of late but she is an unknown quantity coming into Oz. Don't think Venus is the same threat to Lindsay at the moment. Not sure on Amelie's fitness so I reckon it could be Lindsay versus Sharapova and the Russians. Any comments guys;)

Elldee
Jan 12th, 2005, 09:43 AM
I think Lindsay/Momo/Serena against the Russians... Serena is hugely competitive and I think untidy tennis can get her far but hopefully if Lindsay wants it as much as she says, she can work hard and dominate and most importantly, stay positive. I don't see Amelie in the final, so I don't see Lindsay and her meeting. If Lindsay doesn't have a Russian [maybe Maria] in her SF, I will eat my hat!

LindsayRocks89
Jan 12th, 2005, 05:22 PM
Really Lindsay has a great possibiliy to win the aussie open. . and if she wins that she will be even more confident and have a greater chance of winning at wimbledon and the U.S open. . . i really hope she wins one, if i could pick one it would be the U.S, but it definitely will be nice if she takes the 1st slam of the year.

i'm sure she'll win alot of the titles she did last year.

i think the 2 players that will definitely cause her trouble is sharapova and myskina. i think lindsay should be able to beat them both easy, but if i had to guess she will have problems beating maria, and aganist myskina, if they met on grass, lindsay would definitely win, but even on hardcourts she will have some trouble with myskina, she gets so many balls back and lindsay seems to struggle aganist her. . she did blow her off the court last summer but myskina was exhausted. amelie is not a threat to Lindsay at all. i don't really think svetlana is either. Serena is always a threat, if she is healthy and comes out playing good then she could definitely beat Lindsay. Venus well she is getting better, but she has more work to do, Lindsay is too consistent for her right now and will pound balls at her forehand.

lindsayno1
Jan 12th, 2005, 05:45 PM
marias not playing - shes too young

Elldee
Jan 12th, 2005, 05:51 PM
Maria is playing the Australian Open! Age restrictions don't include the slams and this is Maria's last slam as a minor.

I see Maria and Serena as the threats and Dementieva in the latter stages [if she gets there!] but Lindsay's her own worst enemy [and injuries] so if she's as pumped as she says she is, she can pull it off. I don't see Lindsay having troubles with Myskina on the AO surface which is faster than Moscow/LA.

Frederic
Jan 14th, 2005, 05:59 PM
nd faster than the YEC??? Lindsay lost against Myskina in LA, it was really weird because she seemed to play very well... I just hope she will be able to beat Myskina again.

She seems to be doing her normal thing during the clay season. Green clay, silently protesting the red stuff. Playing Roland Garros just becomes stupid. She's not motivated, she doesn't do well there, and it brings out her injuries. Just don't go.

But, I think this year she should play a grass warmup, probably in Eastbourne.

Now for the next year, I just want Lindsay too keep her confidence rising during the key points in slams!!! Let's focus on an amazing year to come!!! :worship:

Lindsay winning the oz open sounds good to me. I think Lindsay play on euro clay is a bad idea. If does what she said and skips the french open it a great idea stay home train for wimbledon and less chance of getting injured play grass warm up. Her chances of winning the french are gone now anyway. My hope for Lindsay is she plays a full year next year wins a slam or two and maybe finishes the year 1 for a third time.

Oh, you're not kidding. I left that match after Vee hit two aces to take the first set. I went upstairs at the Union to donate for the blood drive and I came back and my friends told me Linds won. I was shocked and then I watched the next day on the bonus coverage.
Linds basically won the 2nd set by keeping the ball in play. What also was funny was Shriver's commentary. After Vee dump that swinging FH volley into the net she's like, "WOW, what a drop in quality!" and "That 2nd serve is just lunchtime for Davenport."
I thought for sure Vee was gonna break back when she had 0-40 at 4-3 and 0-30 at 5-4 then the unforced errors
And that forehand return on match point was classic. Str8 up in the air.

Andrew, I was guilty of "fighting the good fight" as well. White or black, Vee can be a real hag. Hell, Capriati is one of my faves, but she can be a bitch. Just because you like their tennis doesn't mean you always have to agree with everything they do. Vee won, but was ungracious afterwards, that's all I was trying to get across.
I don't know how they can say she has class and is gracious when she's done alot of ungracious things over years (the comments after the '04 Stanford final and her comments after Kim ran her ragged at the US Open just to name a few.) Bottom line, I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. It's a fucking sport for God's sake, but by the way some of those nutsies respond, you'd think I was kicking their dog rather than criticizing their favorite tennis player.
And I don't care if they label me racist, James Blake is my 3rd fave male player (and he's hotter than hell), I like Ree, this is unrelated but I was nuts for Surya Bonaly's skating back in the late '90s (that in-your-face backflip in Nagano was priceless), but it's a pity I feel like I have to prove I'm not a racist simply because I criticized an ungracious tennis player who happens to be black.

Their.

I don't get why Lindsay is playing this. Probably the reason she plays all of her obscure events - getting paid loads of money. Play Sydney, make the final, and walk away with about 120 points.

She's handing #1 to Kim.

Elldee
Nov 26th, 2005, 11:16 AM
It's pretty much impossible to keep number one from Clijsters/Pierce as they're both defending nothing at the start of next year.

Also, I study English Lit, I correct other people's grammar frequently, I am deeply ashamed.

I don't think she'll play Hong Kong. Also, win a doubles title this year; perhaps at the tier III she plays.

Andrew..
Nov 26th, 2005, 04:16 PM
Pierce won't get to #1. I'd be willing to bet my house on it. Indeed, she doesn't have much to defend until RG, but the buck stops there. She really can't gain after that. And Mary jsut doesn't play enough to get to #1. One tournament a month won't do it. And, she's going to suck soon for some period of time. That's just how her career is. She can't keep reaching the final of everything she plays, it doesn't work that way with her. I'm amazed she's been as consistent as she has been recently. It can't last forever with her.

Kim...she'd probably get #1 at the Australian Open. But if Lindsay played Sydney, she'd have a decent shot at keeping it through that tournament. Now, with her playing an exhibition as her "warm up", she hands Kim #1 in Sydney. Fight for it, please.

I think Lindsay will do what she does every year - "Doubles is fun! I'm loves my friend Corina! We play forever!" Plays for like a month, cuts it back, realizes it is stupid, and stops.

Andrew..
Nov 28th, 2005, 07:20 PM
It really shouldn't be called an exhibition. It's an eight player event, with four elite players, and four younger ones. They get mass amounts of money for playing there, and nobody treats it like an exhibition, they treat it like a real event. I consider it a professional event "not recognized by the WTA".

Lindsay, Kim, Venus and Serena are all playing there. It's a very strong field for no rankings reward.

Me too. If Lindsay turns up out of form for Hong Kong, she could seriously go 0-3 there. That's not good for the confidence.

Sydney, there's at least 100 cheap points there. And a few wins.

Robbie.
Nov 29th, 2005, 11:43 PM
This is actually quite scary. Although she has the upper hand in the rivalries against these three since Wimbledon '04, she lost the last encounter against all of them and two losses straight might see them reassert their mental dominance over her here. I hate how she is so damn deferrential to the talent of Kim and Venus - she has been better than them for the last 18 months.

Martina absolutely sucked in 2002, and didn't play half the year - and was still in the top ten. It's easier to be there now than it was then.

On the other hand, she could be working her ass off in the off season, as we speak, kick ass at the event, 3-0... Australian Open Champion 2006.

:)
Oh, okay.

Breaking news from the WTA: It's now confirmed that Miami will be a mandatory event for all WTA Gold Exempt players. That means Lindsay.

I think Martina can easily be top 10. Number 1 will be harder, but if she plays enough tournaments and makes the quarters consistently she'll be top 10 I think. She won't have to deal with peak Vee/Ree week in and week out either.
I also hope the Lindsay/Martina rivalry continues. Hopefully Linds can come out on top most of time like in the old days. Martina can be the media darling and Lindsay can just win titles. Fine with me.
I can't wait to see Hingis break down the games of some of the other top players (esp KIM and the Shark). Joy. :hearts:

Yep. I think Lindsay will be too stubborn to play.

i am willing to bet she wont play miami. her body is too tempremental and shes already carefully sheduling. she knows her knee wont hold up forever and shes not gonna risk that on one tourney with a crappy surface. hell knows shes got enough money!

Well, Martina is maybe a little bit rusty... Let's see how she is playing, but I definitely think that the game now is different from the game 5 or 6 years ago...

It's a little bit different, but it's not any better. If anything, it's a worse game now than it was then.

If Martina beats up on scrubs, and has a few top ten wins a year, she'll be in the top ten. That's how the WTA works right now.

I had my DVD sent today Andrew. I got the Wimby fourth round and Chase Final 1999; Lindsay called it her best performance ever in the award ceremony. She even had a slight hip injury. Martina just couldn't do anything.

She looks soooooo much better nowadays, and those Nike outfits looked awful. Her serve has also been tweaked.

Yes, even in 2000, Lindsay was still a big girl. Most of her Nike outfits around that time were death. I liked the one she wore at the start of 2001, but nobody else does.

I don't know that one. Her ones towards the end of 2001 were so so. I remember this grey top with a red ball for Zurich and Linz.

I like this one too. But does anybody like the white one she was wearing during her come back in 2002? And what about the red one during the Australian open in 2003, it suited her soooooo well...

Yes, she looked good at the start of 2003.

I couldn't stand the vest-esque thing she wore at the 98 US Open. It made her look like Haas.

y'all remember the one from Wimby '00 - she looked... :tape:

-----------------that's not true Andrew :p coz:
f.e. I liked Linds outfit in '01 season in AUS/Tokyo/Indian Wells, then Eastbourne & summer swing in CA...also that one she wore in NY against Serena was much nicer than those from 2002 and 2003
last 2 years she improoved (compared to the past) ;)
-------------
theres no way she plays in Miami<probably injury>-simply can't risk her knee ;)
Martinas back so it'll be kinda interesting to see her compete at a level of GS against some new players :lick:
Hingis and Lindsay are the most talented girls out there - despite havin' some difficulties with physical aspect of the game :worship:
their performances were always an entertaining contest

I really have no sympathy when it comes to Lindsay and Miami. She plays in New Haven and New York in the summer, which are probably worse than Miami in March. She just doesn't like it, and it's fine if she wants to skip it, but now it's a mandatory WTA event. You just don't blow those off. That's one of the reasons why the WTA is such crap right now.

Lindsay lost her doubles match to Chris Evert and former President George H. W. Bush 6-4 today.

Andrew sit down when you read this becuase I haveto say I agree with you.Yes some of her outfits where death but what she wore at the start of 2001 here in oz were good just plain red and red and white shoes. You think what she wore then was bad some of the stuff she wore when I started following Lindsay in 94 made the pre 2000 stuff look great if I can find pics I will post them for you they were in one nice word gross.

I hated it when she wore that gray shirt with those shorts. Ugh.

But I liked the sleeveless ones she wore in 2001.
