INTERNATIONAL TOUCH TO 2005 ASB CLASSIC
11 November 2004
http://www.aucklandtennis.co.nz/asb_bank_classic/images/white.gif
The player list for the 2005 ASB Classic has been confirmed with a real international flavour the theme of the 24 players who have direct entry into the January 3-8, 2005 event featuring the Ezibuy singles and doubles.

Sixteen nations make up the players list with the United States having five players and all corners of the globe covered as players ranked within the world's top 90 from Serbia, Puerto Rico, Poland, Thailand, Spain, Venezuela and others bring a real international event to Auckland.

Features of the draw include a newcomer to Auckland, Jelan Jankovic of Serbia.

Jankovic is a real player to watch having risen from the rank of 82 at the beginning of the year to her current ranking of 28.

At only 19 she already has a career singles title winning at Budapest this year as well as beating top 20 players Patty Schynder and Vera Zvonerva to reach the semis of the Tier II event at Linz before losing to Amelie Mauresmo. She also made the quarters of another Tier II at Filderstadt as a qualifier beating Nadia Petrova and Daniella Hantuchova.

The top seed will be 31 year-old American veteran Amy Frazier ranked at 26. Frazier just keeps on winning. She took away her seventh career title at Hobart early in this year and continued with good form at Standorfd, Cincinnatti and Vienna reaching the semis of all three. She also beat Anastasia Myskina to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon.

Earlier in her career she made the quarter finals at two Grand Slams, the Australian Open 1992 and the 1995 US Open. She has over US$3,000,000 as career prizemoney.

A big bonus for the tournament is the return of the double-defending champ Eleni Daniilidou who is aiming to become the only three-peat winner since the tournament re-started 20 years ago. She's still only 22 years old and has three career singles titles, two of them are from Auckland.

She has been ranked as high as 14 in the world with a current ranking of 34. Her best results in 2004 included reaching the semis in Miami where she beat Jennifer Capriati and Karolina Sprem. She also made the third round at the Athens Olympics and the fourth round of the US Open.

Other players to watch out for are US Open quarter finalists Shinobu Asagoe who will be the third seed at 37 followed by 2004 semifinalist Marion Bartoli of France ranked 41 in the world.

The eighth seed will be the fast-improving Alina Jidkova who beat Serena Williams last month. Russian, Jidkova is ranked at 55. The other seven seeds are all ranked inside the top 50.

Two former finalists, Korean,Yoon Jeong Cho (2003) and Russian,Tatiana Panova (2002) are on the list as is former top 20 player Tamarine Tanasugarn of China.

One main draw singles wildcard has already been awarded to 16 year old Marina Erakovic who is ranked No10 in the world juniors with another wildcard yet to be awarded.

Fellow Kiwi international, Leanne Baker is dedicating her career to doubles and at her current ranking of 132 may make the main draw of the doubles at the Classic.

Baker played in the main draw of Wimbledon and the US Open and reached the semis of the WTA event at Luxembourg.

Tournament director Richard Palmer says that the tournament is going to be difficult to pick a winner with the amount of depth there is in the entry list.

"There are seven players in the top 50 and some new names who could be real contenders for the title. It's great to see so many different nations coming to the ASB Classic for what is a real international event, one of the few that is actually held in Auckland or New Zealand," says Palmer.

The qualifying list includes several notable names such as 2000 ASB Classic winner Anne Kremer at 93 along with 2000 finalist Cara Black (135). A former top 20 ranked player and Auckland semifinalist, Silvija Talaja has entered the qualifying too. Two other names in qualifying of note are 18 year old Evgenia Linetskaya a highly rated Russian while another Russian, Lina Krasnortoutskaya who reached the quarters at Roland Garros in 2001 is expected to play in the qualifying as well.

TBE could do better, here's how it works. A player can use their SR for a certain number of tournaments (their choice of which ones to play). I'm guessing CHO used her existing ranking to play the smaller events and get some match play. Now, she'll use her special ranking to play in the bigger events. That's pretty standard for any player who gets hurt and has to miss a long time away from the tour. Hope this helps.

I thought she was retiring? That's what I read on BBC...
that wasn't true
it was based on a report in a local newspaper that made too much out of a remark her father made.
apparently she has asked her old coach to help her train for the australian open
so she's not retiring yet.

From January until August 8 next year, she can play four non-slam events, and the three slams.
Sesil is spreading herself thin then early in the year. However, I agree that she is probably best off playing these lower tier events and gaining experience. Hopefully she can well here and at the AO and improve her ranking to get into the MD of the FO and Wimby. I don't know how realistic that is, but hopefully she can do it. I'll have to search around for her schedule for the rest of the year...
For some reason, I can see her making a big fuss about the AER and causing a big stir on the WTA tour if she runs out of tournaments and still wants to play before August.

does this means that mervana has pulled out???!!!! she is ranked 178 at the moment and her name was here a few days ago. if she has i will be extremely dissapointed in her and very upset. how can playing $10k challengers in germany benefit you more that making a trip down under and competing against the best in the world??? and she gets into the main draw doubles in melb anyways, and she can play qualifying singles.

btw, what does the 1, 2 & 3 mean next to the players names? is that their priorities or something?

ozfan44
Dec 28th, 2004, 04:31 AM
she was never on the list that i recieved from the wta

and yes those numbers are the players preference for playing in the tournament so this week it is either 1 or 2 depending on whether they would prefer to play Gold Coast or here

how do you know that?
i know these things and cos its Lina

last week before tourn sees mass withdrawals from qual list as players dont want to play qualies or cant afford to go down there and fail to make MD/and of extra cost in food/accomodation etc.
